Tsukemen with a side of aburi (frame grilled) pork belly on rice at Afuri, probably my favourite ramen shop in Tokyo. Their soup has a chicken broth base with yuzu, so it has a unique citrus flavour. You can choose sous vide chicken breast instead of pork, and also the richness of the broth, if you want a lower fat ramen. (ramen is usually very high in calories, even more than pho)

This was my first time trying their tsukemen, since it was hot that day I didn't feel like walking around with a belly full of hot soup. Their soup ramen is better though. They also have spicy soup base.

Check it out if you're in Tokyo SeemsGood They have several locations, including Harajuku

Gyukatsu at 1-2-3 Gyukatsu in Akihabara. They deep fry the steaks so just the cutlet part is cooked, but the beef is still raw. From there, you can grill the beef to your liking. This place is very small, and seems to have gotten very popular with tourists since I last went. So even if you go on a random afternoon, there may be a huge lineup. Worth checking out, as it's a unique way to enjoy this already modern dish

Afuri is the shit. Ate there for two weeks straight when I was in Tokyo and gained 10lbs.

They're opening up a location in Richmond!

For Greek in Vancouver I’ve been going to Stepho’s forever, through several gf’s and an ex wife. The food and price is right, it’s on Davie and also now another location on Robson

Banana Leaf?

I haven't been there in ages though, so don't know if it's still as good as it was.

Still good food.
My buddy Steve takes the Japanese bands from his Next Music From Tokyo tour there. He does a set menu b/c of the large group.
We have been to the location on Robson and West Broadway. Both were good.

Prata Man for that stuff. But it's not in Vancouver as per the request. So can't recommend that or John 3:16.

There’s also Hawkers Delight on Main Street just south of King Edward. Good curry chicken on rice, Mee Goreng and Nasi goreng

I felt like Hawker's Delight was mediocre - not quite the same taste as I expected (family is from Singapore so I know what the real deal tastes like).

Diva at the Met, solid 8/10. I think they can use a little less cheese on their dishes but that might be my fault.

Great service, great food. We both had 3 course meals, $50/pp.

The GF had the pork belly and I had the beef carpaccello to start. GF liked my starter better and I liked the pork belly better.

She had the chicken breast and I had the fillet mignon (+$10) as a main. The chicken breast was thoroughly seasoned and I enjoyed that. The fillet mignon at medium rare was perfectly tender but I didn't really enjoy the charred taste. The dauphinoise potatoes were a little too cheesy for my liking. Granted, I had also ordered truffle fries and the parmesan risotto. So cheese over load there.

Lastly we finished with a chocolate praline bar and raspberry/strawberry mousse parfait. Parfait was very good, heavy cheesecake like layer on top, with strawberry mousse on the bottom.

The appy and the dessert were very good, the main wasn't bad, but it wasn't spectacular. For $140 meal, I'd go again. I'm still stuffed and have food coma while writing this and it's been 3 hours. I would skip the extra sides though.

Bean Banh Mi on 1198 Kingsway. Great little Viet Sub shop, taste great, super affordable. 8/10 for a fast quick inexpensive lunch. They bake their own bread, a mom and son enterprise.

I disagree. I was there for their grand opening roughly, and Meh.

roastpuff 08-13-2019 03:24 PM

Isn't that where Tung Hing used to be? Bean Banh Mi is certainly not in the same class.

Funny thing, i drove by, and there was Bean Bao Mi and then there was a hole in the wall Bao Mi RIGHT next door, I went to the hole in the wall because I just feel viet food should never done / eaten / made at a super fancy place. I'll give it a go and see which one is better. In fact, I'll buy two and do a review next time.

Without coming off as being sarcastic, would you care to share with us how steak should be and an example of an establishment that doesn't cook steak like an old steakhouse? Please enlighten us. Thank you.

Ugly Dumpling - 7/10

Had super high expectations for it since it got nominated to Canada's best new restaurant, and had a very intriguing menu, but flavor and execution really fell flat.

The dry aged beef tartare was chopped too finely and overpowered by the dressing; no texture or beef flavor.

Blistered stuffed poblanos were too spicy with the bland zucchini and tofu stuffing.

The spice was a problem as it came out at the same time as our steaming hot chawanmushi.

Great wine list, but cocktails were very meh.
