Out of 95% of my customer, there is at least a minimum of $30 difference between within 15km's and over 15 km's. I recommend to my customers that if they are close within 15kms, I would just recommend the over 15km's to be safe so that ICBC doesn't burn them.

exactly... and i'm not a shitty driver, just had bad luck... had my frist minor accident when i just got my license, and that put me at +55%. i was young and dumb and shouldn't have claimed it, but the other people's car had damages too, so i just let ICBC pay for it... then 3 years later i got into another accident... well not three years, but rather 4 days before the three years. so my rates were supposed to go back to -5%, but because the accident was before the 3 year mark, they raised me up another 6 points, putting me at 205%... talk about a scam. so now i've got a 72 civic sitting there with basic insurance on it, taking up that surcharge, and i'm getting a 25% discount on my audi... and you guys are right, the base rate on it is about $5k...

1. Basic
2. Optional (liability, comprehensive, collision)

The XX% discount/penalty only applies to the Basic portion. With a 25% discount my Basic is about $1200, Optional another $800.

If I was a 60yo man with a perfect record, my Optional would be $400, if I was 20yo with a perfect record it would be $2K, as 30yo with a perfect record its $800. Guess what? The Basic stays the same (not considering discounts/penalty percentages).

Correct me if I am wrong.

Corrected, basic does not stay the same and is effected by the discount/surcharge just like optional coverage.

unit 08-20-2009 08:46 AM

basic does stay the same after a certain CRS level. once you hit 43% that is the max for the basic discount. optional increases slowly even after you've hit 43% on your basic discount. you can have up to 54% discount on your optional coverage, but it takes 17 years to get to that point.

1. Optional coverage is not affected by the discount, private insurers make their own rules about how to calculate this. I gave an example, at 40yo I would pay $400 less, even if I have the 43% discount now and then.

2. I understand Basic is different for vehicles, address, ... yet age/gender is not supposed to make a difference, only driving experience aka the discount.

Where is that info? and please explain why I can get a quote from BCAA for $800 at 30yo and $400 at 40yo with the extra same driving record (8 years clean).

We're talking about ICBC are we not? I understand there are private insurance companies out there you can get optional insurance through and there rates are whatever they want them to be. When dealing with ICBC your discount/surcharge effects everything from basic to optional.

I think we're debating semantics here?

About how much more expensive is each million in liability? Any %?
how much more do you pay for 3mil compared to 1mil?

Edison_Chen 09-14-2009 08:44 PM

From say 1- 2 million its usually about $80 average. From 2-3 million, its usually about 30-50 more.... I usually tell my clients to do 3 million, because its only 30-50 more... to get the 3 million

The cheapest rate class is pleasure use only, then its to work/school within 15, then work/school over 15, and finally business use. However, if you are a delivery guy its the most expensive one..

For the pleasure/to/from work/business use, if there are no drivers with less 10 yrs in the same household, you can save a bit more money each yr.
