what do you mean get fucked over?
are you worrying about fake Alpine or shady installation?

installation in HK is cheap like dirt. I had my deck in Canada installed on my C-
class in hk...took them like 15 minutes, paid $120hkd (at a decent place in
Kowloon City) and not a single problem so far. They even fixed the wacky front
speakers for me without charging me a dime.

Shops on Ap Liu Street charges only $20hkd if you buy a deck there lol
Motorized LCD screen DVD player is around $1200hkd, you should check it out.

Yeah, just worried about shady installation as I may be picking up a sub and a mono amp too and I don't want them to screw up the wiring or sell me a lemon. I heard about the lousy wiring jobs done by some shops on "Black Cloth Street" in Mongkok.

You got a name of the shop you went to in Kowloon City?

asian_XL 07-05-2009 09:23 PM

I can't remember the name of it, cause I drove around and spotted the place "oh hey, this place looks okay, let's stop here"

九龍福佬村道 <---google map that. There are at least 5-6 shops nearby

most of the audio shops just do the installation right at where you park, and all of them allow you to watch the whole installation. I am sure you can pay little extra for those wiring plugs.

what car is it? need custom bracket?

It's for my IS300. Yeah I still need the double din/single din faceplates (I can either order from L-tune.com or go to a junkyard somewhere and get the OEM one from an Altezza) as I don't think Crown HK would carry this since Altezza was an import. The quality of the plastic of the faceplates made by aftermarket manufacturers isn't that great. I will also need a harness for Toyota... and even then I can't bypass the stock amp without splicing some wires...

Do you know if these shops have a good selection of Alpine decks?

impactX 07-05-2009 10:32 PM

BAHAHAHA yeah... that's why I want to get a double-din LCD deck or just an Alpine multimedia deck like this one:

hk20000 07-05-2009 11:24 PM

Wrong. Crown HK WOULD have it because IS200 and IS300 are official imports for Lexus HK. Lexus has the part number for this in their database. If they say no just ask for their manager, usually suddenly it's available.

The fastest way to get your hands on one in HK is at Tomato TRD shop just outside the Mong Kok soccer playground on the opposite side of 黑布街. Also 龍華 on 太平道 would have that 2DIN item for sure.

You should also understand that most shops around 黑布街 are actually owned by the same folks. There are at most 2 to 3 "bosses" of these shops (out of a total of probably 10+ shops) so if you aren't satisfied with one shop's installation, chances are you won't be happy with any of them. The situation is similar to the "sneaker street" where 20+ stores are owned by the same 2 or 3 (filthy rich) people.

For installation I recommend that shop just 2 stores closer to Nelson St. (奶路臣街) from Tomato TRD shop. They do custom wood enclosure and electronic stuff very well. My friend with Toyota Altezza RS200 with the factory pop-up satnav was custom retrofitted with DVD changer that plays through the system despite the fact that the original system did not have any form of AUX input. The whole unit was actually removed from the car, and installed with custom DVD player module soldered onto the factory Sat Nav system to get it to play a DVD box from the trunk of the car by cycling thru functions with the "source" hard button.

I don't think any shop in Canada would be able to pull that stunt off a JDM import, for that I give them props. Look for the shop that has bunch of speakers mounted on a panel outside the shop with a screen installed in the center for try-outs. On weekends there are always some sort of install going on at the pay parking stalls outside.

Does that installation place you recommend have a good selection of decks? If not, I wonder if they could order it in.

hk20000 07-06-2009 01:07 AM

they have good selection but they are also quite fond of some high end European stuff like McIntosh, Blaupunkt and some other odd USA brands. They do carry Alpine but I'm not sure if they have all the latest and best models.

It's where that orange canvas is across from the soccer field in this picture.

九龍城福佬村道 is where Top Mix is. Go check out what they have for your IS300 :D. Just look at the AWESOME fitment of my carbon hood (custom order!)
http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos..._5683280_n.jpg
You can't even tell that's a Carbon Fiber hood right? Exactly.

IMO if you want the best cosmetic composite parts for cheap, HK has game (well they are imported from China but Top Mix has pretty good QC)....Because in HK, driving a car is all about YING(型). even if the part is a bit heavier than it has to be, it'll at least look pretty damn perfect.

Let us know how the installation quest goes haha.

Thanks buddy!

Looks like I will have to walk around on foot around that area when I get back to HK... don't know the area too well.

asian_XL 07-06-2009 01:22 AM

hard to find cheap past in HK...alpine panasonic pioneer are way overpriced and price varies
in different districts. I am not surprised you come back next week and complained about it's
cheaper to buy it online or jpn auctions.

One "wholesaler" shop there wants $430cdn for a set of eibach springs + $180 installation,
Top racing wants $450 for some cheapo sets.

impactX 07-06-2009 05:00 AM

I think the deck is cheaper... but I looked at some subs and amp and I got a quote that's higher than the MSRP of Alpine USA! haha...

asian_XL 07-06-2009 06:07 AM

^ that's right, my friend was looking for a deck that can display chinese ID tag.
apparently not a single chinese-made deck but Pioneer do such thing, a place at Wan Chai
gave me a quote of frickly $3500 + installation, I haven't seen an average pioneer model
priced above $500+ in my life.

try car8 or 28car

I got my alpine 2din unit installed recently in HK (The place I went to was not a dealer for Alpine but he still got the deck at my request). Ask around... prices vary in HK... A LOT.

You don't really need to find a dealer for the best prices. Ie. Speedline is a direct dealer for MOMO/Recaro, however they do not offer the best prices.

Pick up the local mag (Hyper-Speed) and ask around for prices.

prelude_prince 07-07-2009 06:11 AM

From my limited experience modding in HK, places in HK island seem to be more... expensive than places in Kowloon/NT.

Here's one thing I learnt though from HK (Crazy Racing/Top Racing). Is that they NEVER commit to there leadtimes. They always claim they can get parts in without 1week - 1month. They never got it in on time for me.
