Do what your artist says (if it's a good artist)

Also you can refer to the FAQ

Follow your artists instructions.

I was tempted to sway from my artists instructions, with all the so-called 'right' aftercare instructions posted all over the net.

Like Skinny said, do what your artists says.

@truong - that's some sick fucking work

raysquared 09-24-2014 03:30 PM

Just got a tattoo and I followed the artists post care instructions. He put vaseline on my arm and wrapped it with saran wrap and told me to leave it on for 4 hours. I then washed it and wrapped it again with saran wrap overnight. I developed a rash that looks like a poison oak rash and was then told to but cortisone cream on it. What he told me is different than the FAQ we have here. Did I get some wrong info or is it just my skin reacting to the trauma of the tattoo?

XTC_604_DKNY 09-24-2014 03:44 PM

raysquared, where did you get tattooed?
I was always told to never rewrap as it doesn't let your skin breathe, and makes it prone to more germs, sweat and pimples.

raysquared 09-24-2014 03:51 PM

I got it done at Adrenaline. I was reading that vaseline and saran wrap are "old school" ways and that it does suffocate the skin, but i'm supposed to trust the artist. When I go back for my next sessions, I will probably be taking off the wrap and washing right away.

Derek_N84 09-24-2014 04:18 PM

Raysquared - rewash the area with an unscented cleaner, dry it with a clean towel, no vaseline and just let it breathe. the tattooed area is most likely just a little peeved with you covering it again. it should be much better in a day or two but obviously see a doctor if it doesn't.

threezero 09-24-2014 06:13 PM

the saran wrap or wrapping is mostly to prevent bacteria infection during the most vulnerable few hours of the tattoo's life when your skin is still swollen and open from being worked on.

i usually leave the wrapping on till the end of the day and than make sure to scrub any shininess off the tattoo at the end of the night when you shower.

after that i use the let it the fuck along approach and only put on A&E vitamin ointment for the first few days and than lotion only when it feel dry and till it heals. Healed 40+hr of tattoo work this way all my tattoos have heals bright and fine, only needing minor touchups

SkinnyPupp 09-24-2014 07:17 PM

Before you go to bed, scrub it really well (with your fingertips and hot water with soap) and get as much gunk and skin and ink off as you can. Moisturise very lightly with A&E or better yet ORONINE if you can find it (Japanese ointment). After that rinse off the gunk a few times a day and keep it lightly moisturised for the first few days. After that, wash it like normal, keep it lightly moisturised if you like (probably not important by this point).

raysquared 09-24-2014 08:02 PM

Thanks for the responses guys. Its day 4 today and i'm washing 2-3 times a day and using the cortisone cream with an unscented moisturizer. Will keep these tips in mind for the next session.

Lowered_Klass 09-25-2014 09:46 AM

Do you still have the rash? Or is it looking better now?

I would ease up on washing it so frequently (unless it's in a spot that's subjected to getting dirty). Just wash it when you shower, but don't let the shower stream hit your tattoo. It should be the last thing to get wet/get washed, and the first thing you pat dry when you get out.

By now you the tattoo should be scabbing over and looking all gross (dry and flakey). Keep it moisturized, but don't over do it.

wingies 09-25-2014 09:57 AM

when it comes to keeping your tattoo moisturized , less is more imo

raysquared 09-25-2014 12:42 PM

The rash is still there but it's getting better each day. I'm washing 3x a day with unscented soap and applying a thin layer of cortisone cream and lubriderm moisturizer after each wash. I also wash it last and pat dry with a paper towel first thing out. Thanks for all the help and advice! Now I have another session booked in a week or so. Im thinking I should reschedule to let my skin fully heal before trying again.

it's my personal opinion but i dont think you should be washing it so much or moisturizing it. by putting on the lubriderm, you're not letting it breathe and you're not giving it a chance to dry out.
