Just finished up my sleeve in October and been itching for another piece ever since I finished it haha.

Gotta find someone in Vancouver though now, easier to fly down there then back to Edmonton where my guy is.

I just got my lower leg sleeve done by Jesse on Thursday. I was tensing so much when he hit the weak spots that dlo mentioned that I felt like my groin was almost gonna cramp up haha.

Calf sleeve? Let’s see. Out of real estate yet?

Obsideon 03-05-2019 03:55 PM

Still pretty fresh, red and angry looking haha I'll take a better pic in a week or 2 when it's done peeling.

dlo 03-05-2019 08:10 PM

Is there anything extra to consider when getting a tattoo on the hand when you've got cats (litter box) and a kid still in diapers? Just wash really thoroughly (but gently) after or are there other things to be worrying about?

pinn3r 04-17-2019 04:22 PM

Has anybody had a large piece done by Horiryu? I've read that he charges something like ~$200/hr, but I'm curious about the final cost (specifically, a full sleeve+chest) just so I can budget properly.

Not sure if it could be misconstrued as "rude" to them if I ask about a final cost approximation.

SkinnyPupp 04-17-2019 07:11 PM

beebeean has full sleeves from him but I don't think she comes around here anymore :(

It's not rude to ask, it is rude to try to negotiate though. If you send an email, you'll probably be talking to an assistant anyway, not the artist. They probably have a form email they send for questions about cost.

$200 CAD would be insanely reasonable for Horiryu IMO

Adorkami 04-17-2019 10:18 PM

part of my back was by him, was by the piece.

He charges by piece but if you do the math then it ends up being around $220 per hour and I’d imagine that a full sleeve and chest piece would be around 30 hours give or take. You can do the math there

white rocket 04-19-2019 11:06 AM

When I was plowing through my back piece in 2012/2013 my artist would charge me $1,000 and give me the day. I did three 8+ hour sessions and a fourth session for about 6 hours. Both better than the seemingly standard $200/hr rate of today. Not sure if I would get that deal today.

I'm hoping to finish it up this year. More because I want to move onto other stuff. About that, curious y'alls thoughts on having a full color back piece but doing black/grey sleeves? Do people usually choose to go the color or grey route and then follow that theme through their body? Will it look weird? I'm loving everything black/grey nowadays but my back is color since it is a cover-up of two previous color tattoos from way back in the day. Had it not been a cover-up I would have done black/grey. I don't see myself going the color route for my arms or legs at all and I'm struggling to see how that will flow throughout. My sister-in-law, who is Thai, gets mad when I say I want black/grey as she thinks that pale caucasian skin is born for color. That has always stuck with me for some reason even though I have always preferred black/grey.

Thoughts? Opinions?

westopher 04-19-2019 11:19 AM

I have black and grey on my ribs, and colour everywhere else. I don’t think it looks weird, and if others do, fuck em. They’re my tattoos. Personally I don’t care. There are too many artists out there that I want on my body to really care if they don’t “match.”
I mean, the styles aren’t that far off, as it’s the style I like, but you can definitely tell I’ve got work from different people if you have an eye for that stuff.

In Horiryu's case you're actually talking to Simone a.k.a Hori Momiji a.k.a his apprentice the small Chinese girl that works there.

I just got a full sleeve done by him and completed about 6 months ago and it was by the hour. It was 27 hours in total split into 5 sessions with each sessions going 5-6 hrs ish except for the first session which was just outline, it was shorter. Each session was either $1000 or $1200 he would not charge me for 30 mins each time so for example 5.5hrs or 6.5hrs he would just charge 5 and 6hrs.

SkinnyPupp 04-23-2019 06:04 PM

Yeah I think $200 (CAD at that!) is amazing value for that quality work SeemsGood

Have you posted your 27 hour tattoo here?

I'm still around...maybe once every 6 months or so :D

And I agree. It's ok to ask for the approximate full cost but never haggle with the artist.

I got my sleeve completed 3 years ago and he charged by the hour. 32 hours total. I also tipped him cuz I was a very very happy girl over the quality of his work.

It was hard for him to tell me how many hours it'll take because everyone tolerates pain differently and it may take longer to complete a bigger piece. Or your piece might have a ton of details like mine. I have 3 hannya and a snake. The hannya took a while cuz there were a lot of fine lines involved so my first session was almost 7 hours.

Just be aware that Horiryu prefers for customers to come back monthly for their sessions. He doesn't seem to like it when you come back once every few months. I saved up for my entire sleeve just in case for that very reason.

Also, I want a leg sleeve.
