To me, how much you pay for a tattoo doesn't really matter because at the end of the day money is money. I'd rather dish out 10g's for a really nice piece rather than get a so so piece for $100. For an apprentice, I think the piece is not bad. Line work is pretty good, but IMO it feels a bit like a not as good imitation of hori's work. Of course he is his apprentice so it's going to turn out like that, but I'd much rather go for the real thing. I've seen some of his other work, he seems pretty good. Definitely want to see how he does when he starts using his own style |
That's how I thought when I got my first tattoo. "Go big or go home" heh. end up getting my whole back done LOL a small piece just doesnt look complete to me. But I like the coloring on that koi. it's really bold... and the little flower lol it's decent. Could've been worse.. I've seen work from another amateur tattoo artist who was just starting and oh my god lol i'd cry if i had his work on my skin |
Yeah that's why ivr been hesitant it's not that I really care about it being free I guess it's more I wanted a new one that I saw an opportunity. I've always told myself money shouldn't come in the way of great art. I probably won't end up doing it because he wasn't down to do what I wanted anyways so don't want to switch what o originally have planned just to help him. I appreciate the feed back as always. Still trying to think about what I should put on the outside of my arm to go with my hanya |
^ should do it when he progresses though if it doesnt matter for you LOL i feel like he would end up being a good artist. |
Yeah I agree I definitely think he's going to be good just need to give him a bit of time. Look at Jeff tams apprentice Carson, his work is pretty good now and when he first started out I think the level of his work was around the same as this guy. |

The foo dog is some of your best work I've seen, excellent |
yeah give it some time alpine. truong is a prime example of how much you can progress with hard work. |
Wow that leg one is done clean, let us know when you get it colored filled in?...if...so much detail. |
Awesome thread! I have a back piece about 20-25 hours so far. Needs about 5 hours left! Only issue is my artist is in California and I don't know if I can arrange dates for this year to complete it. The incompleteness is killing me :( I think I will try to arrange something for end of year or beginning of next year. Keep up the good content here! |
lets see photos! |
If anybody is on the fence about getting work done from Truong. I give him nothing but props. He did a piece on my leg, I have had work from my different artist and Truong does great work and is gentle with his rotary machine. He is on his way to being one of the best in the west coast don't miss out! |
I'm not on the fence at all. I was drooling over his work before I realized it WAS his work. if there's a list, put me down lol |

Any recommendation for some local artists that specialize in Portraits? |
Steve weibe, that's about it IMO And you're looking at 350 an hour, if not 400 I believe |
Holy fuck he's good. Not taking appointments though. Craig Moston at Gaston tattoo looks pretty good. Not a ton of photos to go off of from what I've seen, but some great work. |
Guy I work with for in with Steve, basically emailed him an idea and he liked it so he took him on. Understandable I guess when you're at that level to pick and choose your peices |
If I can find the time, I really want to get a tattoo done on the side of my ribs (halfway up, about the size of a hand, possibly almost fully shaded in). I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but how terrible of an idea is that for a first tattoo? |
