I ordered some general altimax arctic 205/55/16.... Supposedly its a Gislave nordfrost 3 rebrand which are excellent winter tires comparable(or better) with the upper tier winter tires like blizzak, xice2 etc. i cant wait to bust through some snow this winter.

all the reviews on tirerack have nothing but praise for it.

Is it me or are snow tires horrible when it rains hard.. My new snows do only have about 60km on them but Today was the first time I had to slam on my brakes and slid literally 3 feet but When i had my all seasons Ive never had this happen b4... First time with winters on the new car. Then I had a co worker say that snows are acctually worst than all seasons in the rain...

The meet will be separated into groups.

Subaru and Audi Quattro members: will be meeting in the SFU parking lot, they'll all be grinning and laughing.

All other members: will be meeting at the bottom of the hill, they'll be swearing about how much they paid for snow tires.

Events planned for the evening.

Hill Climb Challenge: Members will attempt to make it up the hill in pairs, the member who makes it the farthest before spinning out and sliding backwards will advance to the next round. Last person to be eliminated, wins.

Stop Sign Challenge:Put those big brake kits to the test, and attempt to brake without sliding past the stop line. The member who stops closest to the stop line overall, wins.

Hoping for a great turnout!

Wait until your snow tires break in, then it will perform better.

I'm both confused and mad at myself at the moment.

I picked up a set of used Pirelli Winter 210 Asimmetrico tires off Craigslist for my gf's car last week, the seller confirmed they have the snowflake symbol. When I got there, the tread looked great and sure enough they said WINTER on the side, so I bought them without looking for the snowflake symbol. I was just looking at them, and I can't find the fucking symbol.

Do only some, "winter", tires have the symbol?

Tires have a break in period, just drive conservatively for tank or two and you should be fine

I don't know for other brands, but I find that A LOT of Pirellis lack the snowflake. I know when I bought my Winter 190's about 6 years ago they didn't have the symbol either and looking at the amount of sipes along with the harder rubber I thought I'd have issues but I was able to get around fine. My friend also purchased some 210's a few years ago for his BMW and his set didn't have the snowflake either. I'm not sure if it's related to the fact that these are performance winters with lower profiles (mine were 50 series, my friend's 45) and they sacrifice snow/ice traction for better wear, hence lacking to qualify for the symbol.

What's the manufacture date on those? I find that a ton of people of CL sell old tires with lots of tread left on them.

To get the snowflake logo it needs to meet the RMA's standards.....just because it says winter doesn't necessarily means it meets all their standards

MindBomber 11-19-2010 08:56 AM

I'm aware of the standards required to get the snow flake symbol, I just assumed that any quality winter tire would have it, even some all-seasons have the snowflake now. Serves me right for not inspecting them well enough I guess. Its frustrating, I don't want her driving around on tires that aren't safe, but I spent my entire budget on these..(I'm venting slightly..)

They were manufactured in 2007, still good. I like Pirelli tires for summer, but in the future I'll stick with Nokian for winters.

124Y 11-19-2010 09:01 AM

I'm using Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60s right now.

Hakkaboy 11-19-2010 09:58 AM

i had pirelli 210's and weren't really too impressed w/ them.

i bought blizzak lm-25's new last year but haven't gotten a chance to drive them in the snow yet.

next set wil probably be the LM-60's...

MindBomber 11-19-2010 11:12 AM

Yeah..
At first the 210's seemed great, they were OE spec on the Porsche 911, but no snowflake and the tread patterns strange.

dL 11-19-2010 11:50 AM

Michelin X-Ice. Been using that for the past 2 winters and it's working great.

Mugen EvOlutioN 11-19-2010 11:54 AM

x ice is discontinued i believe, only X ice 2 now

Redlines_Daily 11-19-2010 12:26 PM

Im still running R compound :D

roastpuff 11-19-2010 02:30 PM

The Sottozero Serie II all have snowflakes... and have been getting great reviews. It seems like the older Pirellis are not very good...

Wonder if that'll fly with the road-check people at Whistler/Cypress?
