this is going to be the first winter that my car is going to face.. Last winter, I kept my car in the garage and took the bus.

hmm.. car is currently in my garage and i'm not planning to drive it until I get a proper set of winter tires..

how much do you guys usually spend on a set of steelies and winter threads?

and how much does the installation cost?

I'm planning to head down to Canadian tire after my last final.

edit: tires for a sedan... not for those 4x4 trucks

You'd probably get gouged by the local tire shops as the radio keeps saying they're in short supply due to Quebec taking up most stock. Try www.tirerack.com. With all fees, duties, taxes, shipping, I still saved over $400 vs buying locally.

As for wheels, depending on your car, see if you can find a used set on B&S forms. Otherwise, steelies are like $50+ each, depending on the size you need.

Mounting is like $100 or so, depending where you go and what size you need mounted and how many you need mounted/unmounted. Advance had a special, I had 4 17's done for $60.

If you can get tires at Costco they have $10 mounting/unmounting for the lifetime of the tires... At least that's what it was 3 years ago.

On my S2000, Hankook Icebear W604's that I bought used from somone on RS a few winters ago.
This will be my third winter on them and going home from Richmond last night, the car felt great on loose powdery snow. Up on SFU, on wet slush the tires still had grip. Lots of grip to speed up, brake and turn. Of course I didn't drive like a moron, as much as I could.

Today, there was some ice in a parking lot and there was some slip when I was goofing around.

In the past, I used studded snow tires and those were the best on ice.
I've also used Kumho KW17's and some Canadian Tire Nordic something tires. Any snow tire will be better than all-seasons.

My bill for 185/70/14 Hankook ipike rc01 and a set of 4 14x5.5" 5x100 steelies came to $604.66 at Canadian Tire, mounted and balanced today. Yes, I know the stock size is 195/60/15 but do the math and it's the same diameter in the end. Worked out to be about $90 cheaper too.

They're not the most expensive winter tires out there, but today, driving around, had no issues with slush, snow, or ice. The only time I had any loss of traction was locking up the brakes and intentionally trying to break the wheels free on acceleration to test them on ice. All in all, I'm happy, and more than satisfied by the performance to price.

Yeah, I had/have plenty of space. :) I know I got incredibly lazy by buying them from CT and having them mounted and balanced there instead of doing it myself at the shop tomorrow, but hey, laziness wins out sometimes. :)

I'm using General Altimax Arctics, bought them from TireRack for a nice price back in early October.

:werd: thats what I'm using, my work is 5 mins away so I'm lucky :). Not the best tire for snow but it does the job if you can drive properly

I'm running the same tire. After looking at the Hankook iPikes 409's, it looks similar too. There's another Chinese brand that makes a copy of the Gislaved NF3's.

I can say the Altimax Arctic's are good in the fresh snow we had yesterday, but ice performance isn't as good as say, Bridgestone Blizzacks. However, for the price, they're great. Any cheap winter tire is gonna be better than an all season.

Call ahead before you head to any tire shop.. chances you won't be able to find the size you want. Get your rims separately if you can.

For mounting / unmounting.. most places (not online) include that in the price of the tire.. even at Crappy tire.

I have Nokian on my X5.. this year I got Goodyear Nordics for my beater e36 (Christmas visitors' use). Even though, it doesn't get driven more than 2k for winter, I took it for a test drive and I found it to be pretty good.

One of my friends put on Nexens as he teaches at SFU... He likes them.. and he says much easier to go to working than marking students' exams.

running on BF Goodrich Winter Slalom, 195/60/r14. it'll be my 3rd winter on them. cheap snow tires, but do the job well enough to not get me stuck.

couple of quick questions for all the snow tire experts:
- what tire pressure should one be running for snow tires? I assume it's gonna be something slightly higher than normal so the tire balloons up a little and is able to bite into the snow better?

- my tires are studdable. I didn't get them studded at the time of purchase, but I feel that I want to now. can I still get that done even after driving a few seasons on them?

I have those on my integra as well and i have had no problems in ice or snow, i make a few trips over the coquihalla in the winter as well.

I raise the PSI an extra pound or two and as for studding them after, I heard that you cannot once they are worn it.

I'm running on the exact same tire (size and all). Tire pressure should be the same as what you'd normally run on. And yes, the tires are studdable (but not necessary).

Before I got these snow tires, my car is often undrivable on snowy/icy days (no traction to get off the side streets). After getting the snows on, I can get anywhere I want without having to worry about getting no traction. These tires got kinda crappy traction on dry roads, but more than make up for it on cold, icy, and snowy roads.
