How the hell did this thread go from talking about snow tires to shoes?

1983 Z28 12-18-2008 07:51 PM

Easy: 90% of RS.net users are gay.

So that's everyone but me, you, and Mananetwork.

And maybe Hypa.

But who knows, he could be one of those closet gays that's just cruising to an appointment with Jerry Springer in 10 years.

skyxx 12-18-2008 08:10 PM

It's metro and not gay....:haha:

Alatar 12-18-2008 08:57 PM

Don't worry. I have it on good authority that I'm not gay.

And yeah, what's with all the shoe talk?!

Just got General Altimax Arctic mounted yesterday. Great tires!

my Snow tires from last season don't seem like they grip as well anymore, but my new ones in the front are amazing. that really bugs me, anyone have any idea why? i first thought it was because they were cold or hard from being in the garage all year long. but i dont think that's the case since i've warmed them up quite nicely.

bridgestone blizzak ws-50s. discontinued but pretty good tire so far. cept when i gas it too much and swing out the rear

but its good to know my ABS and VSC traction control works!

It doesn't have much ultimate grip, does it? I don't know if it's worn or what but mine are pretty crap on ice. :(

My Nokian WR G2's finally came in today. Just picked em up and will get them on tomorrow morning. Can't wait to get them on and feel like I'm not challenging death on the highway. Good thing too, because im designated driver tomorrow night

HedgeHog 12-19-2008 07:09 PM

Run the Nokian WR G2 SUVs on my tank...so far excellent (got them Friday, Dec. 12). A bit softer (expected) but drives well and traction is great (be it snow, ice, rain, or dry). Impressed.

Kumho KW17 - They have been great, I've been able to go everywhere with them without worrying.

Bridgestone Blizzaks - 265/60-18:p

i do 195/60/14s

on dry they suck, not grippy at all and feels like im floating. on fresh snow about 2 inch deep its so so doesn't grip as good but i sure made it up a steep hill no problems. on ice ah...watch your speed its doesn't grip like fresh snow or packed snow but it does tend to fishtail a bit but not to an extent where u have to counter steer too much. on rain its like ziex 912s on rain. on slush snow its good, doesn't slip like how its on ice. overall its better than not having snow tires and for the price i paid for its the best bang for the buck allthough i should of gotten Xi2 when it was still avail.

lol.. those posts were epic.

^^As for snow tires, they don't work well on ice at all. My friend's snow tires felt like all-seasons when driven on ice.

I haven't had any experience with studded tires. Do they help with ice traction?

I think they're fairly good in the ice. The street outside my house was covered in ice and I'd be driving up and down going 50km/h and then jamming on the brake and I could stop pretty well without triggering the ABS. It all depends on the winter tire design/tread/compound/etc. Some are obviously better than others and some are designed for different uses, ie deep snow, vs ice traction vs dry performance on winter highways.

Thanks for the info!
I've had them on for 2 days, and so far, I'm impressed with the grip on snow and slush. On ice, it's still a little unnerving, but it was my fault for locking my wheels under breaking, going down an icy hill.

Jermyzy 12-21-2008 03:16 PM

Anybody else have problem getting traction from stop in deep slush? Everytime I stop at an intersection that has deep slush and have to start, my car slides sideways a bit. I'm running Yokohama AVS Winter V901, which are supposed to be "winter performance" tires...is this why? My tires work well in snow, okay in ice, but I always seem to slide in deep slush...

Adrenaline Rush 12-21-2008 03:45 PM

Momentum is important when driving in snow. I try to do very slow rolling stops at intersections because once you stop (especially on a hill), you're in trouble. It's just the amount of snow plus we have some ice underneath...

Winter performance tires aren't that great in the deep snow. They're more for highway driving so they can stand up to the highway speeds without hydroplaning (and most winter tires have low speed ratings) and they still have decent corning performance and don't have the squishy sidewall feeling. They still give decent traction on ice and snow since they have those sipes on the tread and are made with a winter compound, however, they're not as great as a reg winter tire. Check out Tirerack's ice rink comparsion between the Blizzak LM22's vs the WS60's. On the ice rink, the LM22's were just a bit better than all seasons, while the WS60's were signifigantly better on ice. However, the WS60 would feel like crap on a dry road.

As for your sliding problem, my old civic with winters does that too. You just have to go easy on the throttle. You probably got an open diff so one wheel spins faster than the other when there's no traction. My speed3 w/ LSD doesn't do that as much. I'm able to pull straight, but still I get wheel spin so I have to throw it in 3rd to pull up hills. My CRV, I just mash the gas and go.

LiquidTurbo 12-21-2008 03:57 PM

Winter performance tires are a compromise.

.Renn.Sport 12-21-2008 04:41 PM

i still remember SE3P-T using Advan A048R as winter tires then gets stuck LOL

Volvo-brickster 12-21-2008 05:00 PM

running Goodyear all seasons ... 31x10.5 R15

steering in the snow is simply a suggestion for my car....it steers like a 3 legged cow

Shun Izaki 12-21-2008 06:08 PM

Blizzak WS-60's in 205/55/16

for my stock wheels, it's not performing too bad, i can even go out to eat today :) and I can't see any road lines....
