Take the fine if it results at a closer look at the refs. Refs shouldn't be bulletproof to bad reffing.

spoon.ek9 01-11-2010 10:05 PM

shit is gonna be hard to prove, but i swear to god, these last few games have been pure bullshit from the refs. ridiculous calls and in tonight's case it cost use the game, 2 points, and a tie in the northwest division.

3seriesBeeM 01-11-2010 10:06 PM

Absolutely ridiculous reffing even Lu said in the post game he has never seen that in his career and Lu is not one to rant about refs. Burrows said the ref had a bias against him from the last game against nashville where a boarding misconduct was called against nashville for a hit on burrows. Burrows stayed down for a bit but was fine. The ref allegedly said to burrows that he made him look bad last game so he will get him back this game.

Anybody notice Luongo's being bailed out by the post a lot lately?

SumAznGuy 01-11-2010 10:08 PM

I swear those guys who set up sports betting is rigging professional sports. That's why there is no professional sports team in Vegas.

Time to put my aluminum helmet back on.

If you watch him, a lot of guys know he cheats and leaves a bit a room on the short side, especially high glove side.

This season, there has been a bunch of goals and post/crossbars that were hit because of Lu cheating.

The game is over. We lost, so now let's look forward to the next game. In the end, we're still going to make it to the playoff and then loss.

Just saw the Burrows postgame interview in its entirety. The NHL does like to protect it's officials, and I honestly would not be surprised if Burrows got more than just a fine. Either a hefty hefty fine or a fine and suspension. He ripped the ref a new asshole with his comments. I like his passion, but you have to think the refs will now never give Burrows the benefit of the doubt on calls. Didn't get to watch the game, but watching the highlights, damn, the call on Burrows was a little soft.

clowe 01-11-2010 10:55 PM

That ref (Stephane Auger) called a 5 minute major for charging against Nashville's Jared Smithson when he hit Burrows last game. Auger said he saw the replay and that Burrows wasn't hurt. He told Burrows made him look bad and he's gonna get him back tonight, and he did.

I don't know man.

If you know the ref is going to retaliate, a reasonable person will not schedule them so that they officiate that game.

Then again, the NHL is run by Gary Bettman so who knows!

The call was totally BS though man.

Imo there was something going on between Burrows and that ref. It's going to be impossible to prove and I highly doubt the NHL will really look into the matter but that been said, if he refs another Canucks game he'll be on very thin ice if he makes any calls against the Canucks. Also something interesting they mentioned on the radio is that this same ref was the ref that accused Shane Dion of making that so called slur "''four French referees in Montreal" in 2005.

'I'm going to get you tonight,' were referee's words, according to Alex Burrows

Quote:

By Ben Kuzma, The Province

It was looking like a night to remember for Alex Burrows. It proved to be one he'll never forget — and will probably pay for following a post-game tirade against referee Stephane Auger.

Despite scoring two goals Monday in a 3-2 loss to the Nashville Predators at GM Place, the Vancouver Canucks winger was livid at Auger. He accused the official of having a personal agenda to get back at Burrows for a Dec. 8 hit in Nashville that Burrows absorbed from Jerred Smithson. On that night, Smithson was assessed a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct. Last February, Burrows was ejected from a game in Montreal by Auger for a high stick that looked like a borderline call.

"When Smithson hit me sideways, he [Auger] said: 'I saw the replay and you had your head up and weren't really hurt and you made me look bad and I'm going to get you tonight,' " argued Burrows. "It cost us two points."

On Monday, Burrows was called for diving, interference, unsportsmanlike conduct and also given a 10-minute misconduct. All the infractions came in the third period.

"It was personal," fumed Burrows. "It started in warm-up. Before the anthem, the ref came over and said I made him look bad in Nashville on the Smithson hit and he was going to get me back tonight. He got me on a diving call that I didn't think was diving and an interference call. I had no idea how he could call that. It changed the game."

Burrows was called for diving after he got tied up witih Dan Hamhuis in the corner boards. He was called for interference on a Canucks power play when it looked like he was only getting into position to screen goalie Dan Ellis. After the interference minor and with Henrik Sedin off for tripping, it was Shea Weber who ripped a slapper past Roberto Luongo on the short side at 15:57 to snap a 2-2 draw.

But Burrows was only getting started in ripping Auger and could face a fine for his continued outbursts.

"Because of a guy's ego, it just blows everything out of proportion and the refs are making bad calls and we're paying for it," added Burrows. "He comes into the game and he's going to make a call to give Nashville the advantage and I don't think that's fair for my teammates and for the fans. I think he should sit out the rest of the year making calls like that are making us look bad. Not only the calls, every TV timeout we skate around and he came over in the second period and didn't want me to step on the ice even though I didin't do anything bad."

Burrows wasn't the only one miffed at the calls. Roberto Luongo couldn't believe what he was seeing from his crease and Canucks coach Alain Vigneault said the club will look into the winger's allegations.

"I'll let you guys draw your own conclusions," said Vigneault. "There's a history there [with Auger] and we're definitely going to look into that. If it's true, it will be brought up."

Luongo sensed that this wasn't going to be an ordinary night. While he did surrender goals to Joel Ward, Ryan Jones and Weber, he didn't think his club was going to have to surrender to the officiating.

"I'm not the type of guy to make excuses, that's not who I am," he said. "But I've never seen anything like that in my whole career. The first time I've seen calls like that, especially when the game is on the line."

It all took away from a night when Burrows should have been celebrating being NHL player of the week and making it nine goals in his last five games.

When Daniel Sedin threw a backhand pass from the sideboards across the crease, Burrows instinctively parked himself behind defenceman Dan Hamhuis at the far post and easily tapped the offering past Ellis for his first goal. He then got behind Hamhuis again to deflect an Alex Edler power-play point shot past Ellis to make it 2-2. He nearly deflected a point shot to make it three hat-tricks this season, but ended up having to defend himself against Auger.

Honestly, even if the penalties had not been called at the end of the game, it doesnt guarantee that canucks wouldve won the game. But it just pisses me off that the ref called the penalties due to personal reasons. Not only is it unfair to the canucks but potentially to all other games he officials.
I really hope this gets looked in to and perhaps come to some kind of conclusion on it. I dont believe that Burr is making anything up, considering that by publicizing his opinions on the refs like that could cost him and his team (potentially) a lot more than just a game.

I am angry >=(

Harvey Specter 01-11-2010 11:33 PM

If this was soccer and it cost the team a goal, the fans would rush the field and hang the ref, lol.

i'm gonna side with burrows on this.. dont think he's the type of guy who'll lash out without cause. he knows what's at risk when he speaks up, thumbs up to him.

seakrait 01-11-2010 11:56 PM

yeah... but let's hope he doesn't get some official punishment from the league that sits him out some games...

Harvey Specter 01-11-2010 11:58 PM

I wonder what Don Cherry will say about this incident on Coach's Corner this Sat.

Bonjour43MA 01-12-2010 12:07 AM

This is the Detriot game that was called by these two bonehead refs (Auger + LaRue)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nZpCHtQYYI

It's almost like the NHL is trying to cover up any wrong doing by its refs, with the intention to make sure they don't make themselves "look bad" to the media and the fans.

I think we'll get a similar reaction from the NHL on this Burrows' incident - nothing done, and the Canucks + Burrows will be screwed over even more now since the refs were called out on their incompetence.

goo3 01-12-2010 01:20 AM

It's the NBA!
