The West teams are just...better.

That is the stupidist excuse I've ever heard. So lets say player A plays one game and scores 5 pts then goes out for the year. Should he win MVP cuz his points per game is higher than everybody else? And is it guaranteed that Ovie will have more points than Hank if he didn't miss any games? So we should punish Hank or Sid or whoever for not getting injured or not playing reckless? Ovie has noone to blame for missing games but himself. To me, it's absurd that Ovie should even be in the running for MVP. The Caps were something ridiculous like 7-2-1 without Ovie in the lineup...that sure shows how important he is and without Ovie's 50 goals, the Caps would still be 3rd in the league in goals. Some people can even argue he's not even the best player on his team. He's just the flashiest and gets the most attention.

Ovie plays huge minutes. Compared to Hank, Ovie only played 55 minutes (or about 3 games given his average ice time) fewer.

He also plays a lot more on the power play than Henrik.

Ch28 04-11-2010 07:19 PM

Don't forget that Ovechkin was suspended twice for 2 games each.

Also, Botchford from the Province.

I will be voting for Henrik Sedin for the Hart Trophy.
I will be voting for Henrik because The Roberto Luongo is 18th in save percentage and 19th in GAA, and the Canucks still won their division with 49 wins, tying a franchise record.
I am voting for Henrik because Alex Burrows — Alex Freakin' Burrows! — scored 35 goals and Mikael Samuelsson scored nine (30% of his total, a career high) when he played seven games this year on a line with Henrik. Goals are the most important statistic in the game, and Henrik has turned just about everyone he's played with into a goal scorer. (Sorry, we still can't explain Steve Bernier).
I am voting for Henrik because he finished the season with 112 points, and no one had more. Alex Ovechkin has never had more. Sidney Crosby has had more only once. Henrik did it despite being 38th among forwards in per-game ice time, and 43rd in average power play ice time among forwards.
I am voting for Henrik because Daniel Sedin broke his foot, missed 18 games and, in those 18 games, Henrik scored 10 goals. I am voting for Henrik because he plays in the Western Conference, and, simply, it's better. In that better conference, Henrik finished with 21 more points than Brad Richards who had the second most in the west.
I am voting for Henrik because the Hart goes to the "player adjudged most valuable to his team" and if you take Henrik off the Canucks, Ryan Kesler bumps up to the No. 1 line and their No. 2 centre is Kyle Wellwood.
I'm voting for Henrik because he had 83 even strength points which is more than any player has had since Jaromir Jagr put up 95 in 1995-96. That was 14 years ago. Take a moment, and think about that.
I am voting for Henrik because last year he set a career high with 82 points. Going from there to here, and doing it at age 29, is not only stunning, it's virtually unprecedented. No one in the NHL has raised their game more demonstratively. That matters.
I am voting for Henrik because Christian Ehrhoff spent the whole season on the Canucks second power play unit and Kevin Bieksa spent most of his season on the first.
I am voting for Henrik because through the toughest part of his season, when he was quietly playing through a back injury and facing criticism for not producing enough, he still put up 16 points in 14 games.
I am voting for Henrik because I watched all 82 games he played, and I long ago lost count of how many times I picked my jaw up off the floor. I can't count how many times he helped take over a game. Or how many times he played like Geppetto, guiding the puck in and around the net, under legs, and through sticks like it was his puppet on his string.
I am voting for Henrik because he was given an "A" this year and then became the Canucks leader. I am voting for Henrik because for far too long he has been overlooked, under appreciated and undervalued. It shouldn't matter. But it does.
I am voting for Henrik knowing that Ovechkin, Crosby, Ilya Bryzgalov, and Ryan Miller are all worthy candidates. Just not as worthy as Henrik Sedin. Not this year, anyway.

After Art Ross Trophy winner Henrik Sedin and the Canucks treated Calgary like the Washington Generals on Saturday, they came up against the Harlem Globetrotters themselves. The famous basketball barnstormers are booked for next Saturday at GM Place – the night CBC covets for the Canucks' Game 2 for the People's Network.

CBC declined to settle the conflict by a game of H-O-R-S-E with the Trotters. Instead, expect the Meadowlark Lemons to be quietly compensated for their inconvenience, and CBC will then have their Saturday prime-time attraction at 7 p.m. ET against Los Angeles.

SWEDISH ART

It was a tension-filled Sunday as predicted, but not for the reason anyone would've guessed.

Alex Ovechkin faced off against the Boston Bruins needing three points to rip the Art Ross Trophy back from Henrik Sedin, who posted four points in a magical night against the Flames Saturday to stake his claim on the scoring title.

Ovie was held pointless, which all but cemented Hank’s claim on the hardware, right?!?! Not so fast.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby entered Sunday’s matinee against the Islanders needing a ludicrous eight points to upend Henrik.

Couldn't be done, could it?

When Sid notched his fifth point at 11:09 of the second period, sweaty palms across the city went cold.

But the New York islanders - the same Islanders that slammed the door in the face of the Cinderella Canucks in the Stanley Cup final back in '82 - shut the door on Sid in the third and cementing Hank's milestone. Twitter exploded with congratulatory messages for Vancouver’s latest Swedish hero and the city breathed a sigh of long-awaited relief.

Canucks fans everywhere felt it: a corner had been turned.

"I am very proud of the season that our team and my teammates have put together," said Henrik.

"It is a great honour to win this trophy, the names of past winners are many of the players we looked up to growing up in Sweden."

Sedin’s 112 points in 82 games set a new team record and made him the first Canucks player to win the scoring title and he did it in dramatic fashion piling up four assists in the season finale.

"Many of my teammates have had career seasons offensively and this trophy is a reflection of our hard work."

"I'm grateful for the opportunity my teammates and the coaching staff gave me to try and win this award. It reflects teamwork and commitment."

The big questions is whether Hank’s storybook finish will merit genuine consideration for the Hart Trophy for the league’s MVP – a trophy usually reserved for the Eastern darlings.

It’s worth noting that five of the last six Hart winners also claimed the Art Ross. Hank’s 112 points was more than Ovechkin ever posted in a single season and more than Crosby has had, save for one season in 2006-07.

And when you consider that Henrik lagged behind 38 other skaters in average ice-time, and that he lagged behind more than 40 others in power play time, it makes for a compelling argument.

west conference definitely gonna be more interesting than east conference ..

it can go either way for both teams ...

my thoughts:
Sharks VS Avs: crazy 1st line for the shakrs, but i am not sure if No-show Joe will step it up this year... Sharks will probably dominated the Avs and crush their playoff run

Hawks VS Sabers: This is probably the only game people can agree the Hawks will move into 2nd round

Canucks VS Kings: Canucks has good record against the Kings during regular season but with the injuries on the blueline, it could be a hard battle for the Canucks and the result can go both ways.

Coyote VS Wings: This match can go both way simply phx got a brilliant goalie, Howard is good but everyone knows he doesnt have playoff experience.

I think all matches, excluding the Hawks VS Sabers will probably end at game 6 or 7.

this!

DuhDang 04-11-2010 09:10 PM

I don't think the west is "better" but its the style of each conference. West is more balanced in Offence Defence and Goal. East is almost all Offence. Therefore when East plays West. West usually dominates because of their defensive skill.

DuhDang 04-11-2010 09:13 PM

My predictions

West
Colorado over SJ
Chicago over Preds
Van Over LA
Detriot over PHX

East
Wash over MTL
Phil over NJ
Sabres over Bost
Ottawa over Pengiuns

Is anybody else confused as to why Ryan Miller is getting all the goaltending hype? Is it cuz everybody wants an American to win Vezina and Hart? Is it cuz of the way he played in the Olympics which dosen't mean a thing in the NHL. Everybody seems to be forgetting Brodeur. Here's a guy who's coming off his first major injury of his career, led the NHL in wins with 44 compared to Miller's 41, played about 400 more minutes than Miller, had 4 more shut outs than Miller and GAA was only 0.04 higher than Millers. It's not that I don't agree Miller had a fantastic year, but I think Brodeur had a better one. Lets talk offensive help, the Sabres scored 13 more goals than the Devils and the Devils are in the Atlantic which means night after night of Crosby, Malkin, Gaborik, Richards, Carter etc while nobody of that calibre comes to mind in the northeast. Lets talk team defense. Miller has Calder and Norris candidate Tyler Myers and Rivet while Brodeur's best dman is probably Paul Martin who missed 61 games. It should be clear who the better goalie is.

For me it's Miller/Bryz>>>>>>>>the rest. The Vezina has essentially become the most valuable goaltender as well since goalies never win the hart, the last one I remember was Jose Theodore in 2002? Also last season an American did win the Vezina, Tim Thomas.

Both Brodeur and Miller have a similar winning percentage but Millers gets his team at least a single point 86% of his starts while Brodeur is at 67%. Buffalo allows 31.4 shots/game (T-8th most) while New Jersey allows 27 (2nd least). New Jersey plays a trapping style of play while Buffalo will give up a lot of quality chances (mostly because they know their goalie will bail them out). Offensively, NJ has more high-end talent than Buffalo (Parise, Elias, Zajac and Kovie vs Connolly, Vanek, Roy and Pominville) and it shows. No player on Buffalo has more than 28 goals or 69 points. Also while the Atlantic may have more superstars, the Northeast has 4 of 5 teams going to the playoffs while the Atlantic has 3.

While Brodeur had a good season after an injury and was solid, but he played on a better team and had several rough patches. Watching Miller and Bryzgalov play though, they both consistently stood on their heads and carried their team.

Ronin 04-11-2010 11:43 PM

Bryz should get some serious consideration. The Coyotes are a force this year...and a lot of it is thanks to Bryzgalov. A team of mostly nobodies all stepped up their game and rode their hot goalie all year. Their coach is going to win the Jack Adams almost guaranteed.
