That's kind of the point. People are down on him because of the odd gaffe. Well guess, what, even the best have "the odd gaffe", and the one whom most consider the best goaltender ever, has had by far the oddest. I mean, Roy rarely screwed up, but when he did, it was one for the ages. Does that diminish his standing? No. So should Luongo's brain-farts diminish his? No.
It's got nothing to do with his lack of playoff success so far - as Hondaracer notes, that's the whole team's problem. You can't ever pin that on any one player. Dismissing the guy's talent and skill because he makes the occasional mistake is the thing that's ridiculous, because ALL the greats screw up at one time or another, no matter how good they area. | Oh no, I missed one! . There goes my argument.
No, a gaffe here and there should not diminish his standing...My personal favorite's of Roy is the Statue of Liberty. But in comparison to Roy, Luongo has no standing, or at least he doesn't have the standing that people in Vancouver make him out to have. He is not a god tier goalie...And I'm not saying it's because of his mistakes, I'm saying that his best hasn't gotten him the accolades...Whereas if he were a great goalie, he'd have them by now, regardless of the team in front of him (and yes, I'm well aware hockey is a team game, and that the success of one does depend to a degree on the other people on said team). |
