Rode the Malahat (On the island) and up a road in the Shawnigan Lake area. 50km, max speed 80.5km/h on the way down. Legs are feeling good, lungs feel like I smoked a pack a cigarettes, and I don't smoke! Need to work on the old cardio I think!

604CEFIRO 10-08-2012 08:16 PM

Damn 80km? That's scary.

It was my first time up cypress so I wasn't all to comfortable bombing down the hill. We went 68km max down one of the stretches

Do you guys have a recommendation on a wireless Cadence computer? An affordable small one?

i use the cateye wireless strada or something...got it for about $40 online somewhere. pretty accurate reads I'd say!

edit: sorry I the cateye strada doesn't have cadence. I think you can get one for sub $80 though.

Just bought a wired one from MEC, not sure what I was thinking. They have a wireless version with cadence (optionional piece required) for around $30. The wired version works great, I will be upgrading. I believe the brand name is Fitzer?

604CEFIRO 10-09-2012 09:09 AM

^^ thanks guys. tbh i'm not sure if i need cadence?

I guess I'm more concerned about speed. I've been a bit reluctant going on group rides b/c most clubs post up their average cruising speed of 30km/h

I'm sure I can do that speed, but I just need to make sure I'm there before i go and end up getting dropped or something lol

[edit]: and also it'll help to know how fast I'm going downhill =/

I'll look into the cateye ones. They looks fairly affordable!

I have the Cateye Double Wireless (it has cadence). Got it online for ~$80.

Also it's far easier to hold a certain speed in a group compared to solo. Drafting is magic.

Cadence is great to have especially when you get more advanced, even more important than speed IMO. I think I recall reading somewhere that 100rpm is the most efficient cadence, and you adjust your gearing to keep yourself in that sweet spot especially on longer rides where you are bagged and just trying to get through or feeling lazy and end up spinning.

Solid ride! Going up the hat on a bike looks tough.

I got a used commuter bike with skinny tires and recently gave my commute a try. Langford (West Hills) to Victoria (Uptown) in about 55mins on the Galloping Goose and 1hr after work. It's 15km each way. I am commuting once a week and will try riding more. Riding in the morning on the goose is really nice and relaxing.

Eventually I want to be able to commute this way (30km a day) plus a 1 hr workout at the gym.

I paid my deposit on a CAAD10-4. It's at the shop. It's up to me now to go to Pacific Multisport to pay the remaining balance and to get fitted. Too many things have come up and got in my way. :(

This Saturday, hopefully! :fullofwin:

Just in case anybody was questioning how tough carbon road frames are:

604CEFIRO 10-11-2012 07:32 AM

hehe, i'd be more inclined to trust a $16k dogma doing that than my $2k carbon bike lol

but that guy's gangster

[edit]: u can use wd40 like that????
