Funny how Failbook has sent me a reminder of the Great (Free!) Salt Run Vancouver had from 5 years ago:

I can't believe that was 5 years ago already. Damn, time flies!

Wow my street this afternoon!!! It barely snowed in Ladner but it was like ice crystals. Now that vehicles have driven on them, it’s now a hard packed ice rink. Thank god it’s all flat farmland

Yea, there's multiple types of snow accumulation and this is what a lot of people from snow-heavy places fail to recognize is most dangerous for Vancouver. This snowfall on top of slush/wet conditions while the temperature hovers around 0 is perfect for hidden ice formation.

East coasters, Albertans etc etc always say we're just bad drivers that can't handle an in of snow etc when they can drive just fine in a foot of snow. They're not apples to apples comparisons. We had that dry snowpack in that first winter blast with the arctic air, this is the type of snowpack most people are familiar with and yea it wasn't too bad aside from being just stupid cold.

This next one is going to be the Vancouver special. Snowfall on top of already semi-frozen ground. One minute you have traction, the next you're going to be driving on a skating rink and its straight to destination fucked. Stay safe out there everyone.

whitev70r 01-05-2022 07:00 PM

... so ... what happened? When is it going to start?

It happens in Alberta as well. The big difference is it happens once a year instead of every single snowfall like it does here.

Looking at the radar seems like it's in WA n Victoria with some sprinkles hitting Richmond

Maybe we're in the clear :/

Has there been any talk of schools possibly closing tomorrow due to the snow and treacherous roads? They remain open for children of essential workers. I barely made it into work today with studded tires and they remained open. Tomorrow I have to drop my kid off in Mission and the roads will likely be much worse.

Traum 01-05-2022 08:57 PM

My kid's school principal has emailed us (ie. all parents) that there is a possibility of school closure tomorrow (Thurs), and VSB's decision will come at 7am. We're told to follow the news media since that announcement will be sent to the local news media outlets. In BB's case, you should probably check the Mission School Board's website tomorrow some time after 7am too.

On a different note, CoV Waste Collection has emailed us saying that only recyclables (ie. blue box) will be collected tomorrow. This is not surprising because I was expecting them to be unable to come because of the snow fall anyway. But it does mean it will be the 2nd week where my green bin has not been emptied.

lol, it's coming down in Burnaby now.

inv4zn 01-05-2022 10:45 PM

Coming down pretty good in South Burnaby, about half an inch on my car in 2 hours :notbad:

whitev70r 01-05-2022 10:47 PM

Yah ...it's arrived, a bit later than forecast. Tomorrow will be a snow day for sure. Don't even think about using Alex Fraser or Port Mann. It'll be easier to swim across the Fraser than to take either of those bridges.

StylinRed 01-05-2022 11:31 PM

The bridges might be closed too they warned

Mr.Money 01-05-2022 11:49 PM

near downtown.

JSALES 01-06-2022 12:05 AM

When are they going to start plowing the streets of Vancouver? Haven’t seen anything plowed yet

twitchyzero 01-06-2022 12:11 AM

there were 2 behind me on 33rd

jing 01-06-2022 05:16 AM

Roads were OK heading towards the DTES. Plowed well for the most part
Seen a few questionable drivers already even at this hour so I can only imagine it'll get worse later.

Hondaracer 01-06-2022 06:19 AM

4 inches of snow in Vancouver and the answer is the mayor going on twitter telling people to stay home! Ffs..

RiceIntegraRS 01-06-2022 06:30 AM

Its not even that bad in surrey. I have snow cables for my truck but i dont even think i have to even use those in this weather

stewie 01-06-2022 06:39 AM

Mainroad is the contractor for highway 1 here I believe. 5:30am highway was pick a tire rut and stay in it. Lanes not needed. If they can't keep up with plowing they should start allowing municipalities to plow the highway that runs through their city. Langley roads were crap but once I got over the Kensington overpass in Burnaby which was crap as well (Mainroad also has the contract for every overpass) city streets were clear as can be.
Also gotta love those highway warriors in trucks ripping it down the highway. Saw several of them do small fish tails as they were passing the cars ahead of me. Can't wait to see one of them sitting sideways.

quasi 01-06-2022 07:19 AM

It's looking pretty icy out there.

Didn't snow as much as I expected.
