Sorry to hear that, but I've heard so many problems with the admin system lately. I don't blame you. All the new guys coming to cold lake release before their initial 5 year contract is up. It's that bad now.

Just to put more fuel on the fire - the Air Force Commander came to cold lake recently to make a big announcement. Guys were released from work to attend the town hall. We all thought it was a change for PLD, or a decrease in PMQ rent. Nope. New leather flight jackets for pilots. The fucking commander for the Air Force flew down to cold lake to announce new flight jackets for pilots. Fuck this organization is retarded, from the top down. I know 5 guys who released the next day because of this non sense. Pilots themselves were shocked and don't understand the complete idiocy of our high command.

Unfortunately, there comes a point when I need to cut my losses and move on with life. I have higher aspirations than being a military pilot, living in shacks the rest of my life and paying off this student debt for the next decade or more. I can get out, pay the debt off, travel, have fun, and own houses in the next 5+ years.

I honestly am not too surprised. When I wrote up my initial memo for release the Adj at the school made me rewrite it because I had mentioned i'm leaving due to military imposed debt. Pretty much told me that what I was saying was bullshit and that since I signe don the dotted line it was my problem.

Most of these issues are centralized to 4 Wing, it seems to be the vortex for mass releases.

I'm a Canadian citizen though I was born abroad. We're in Idaho for Mountain Roundup - big multinational training exercise so we're here for a few weeks. I may be off to Corsica in November for the same. There are exchange postings in the US as well as a few other countries though they've been reduced in numbers over the past decade. You can fly Hornets with the USMC/USN and Vipers with the USAF. There are Viper exchanges in Holland and Belgium as well I believe. France and the UK are the only other flying exchanges available right now but there are ground jobs in other European countries with NATO like Italy for example.

Like Gab said the Seneca program is having a lot of trouble, guys aren't passing. However DEO's are having trouble with PFT as well as the curriculum is pretty tough these days. Excluding myself there were something like 8 or 9 non-RMC pilot OJT's at 4 Wing this summer and I believe 3 passed and are on to Phase II, everyone else is releasing.

JD, do you know a guy up there named Mike Labreche. He was posted up in Cold Lake and just went off for PFT a few weeks ago I think.

I think the way to go right now is to get a PFT bypass, you skip all the bullshit selection process that goes on at PFT and show up at "basic training for pilots". Hell if I could do it over again I would have gone a very very different route in order to "maximize" being in the military.

While I understand why they want a degree, I feel some people can just be natural pilots and learn the things they need to learn to be a good one. If the entry ever changes to not require a degree I know %100 I would enlist. But for me, 4 years of school just to be able to be a pilot when I can get my commercial lic. in a bit over a year and spend the next 3 working my way up in the industry it doesn't make sense for me to do.

Understandable sentiment however you are an Officer before you are a pilot. In order to be an Officer you must have a degree, that's the way it's been for decades and won't change. They have to set the bar somewhere, they can't afford to send everyone off the street to pilot training. Air Crew Selection in Trenton eats an average of 50% of the candidates that tryout and those are all people with 'higher education'. Each person they send costs the government a couple grand when you factor in transport, lodging, food, and all the medical testing. They are only going to send proven candidates.

In the US Army you can fly Helo's as a Warrant Officer. Just confirmed with a Blackhawk pilot.

Most jobs in the military you can do without a degree. It's like JD said, a bar to set Offiers apart. It also shows you have the ability to learn.

Thing is Falcon, if you're good enough with the military you're not out of pocket 70k to get your licenses.

Two weeks ago was the 20th anniversary of the raid in Mogadishu, Somalia by the US Army that was the basis of the movie 'Blackhawk Down'. They talk about Super61 in this video but other than the introductory monologue there is no other mention of Super64. 64 was piloted by CWO Mike Durant who was taken hostage for 12 days after Delta Force operators Randy Shughart and Gary Gordon were KIA trying to rescue him.

"Shughart, Gary Gordon and Sergeant First Class Brad Hallings had been providing sniper cover from the air. Gary Gordon wanted to be inserted to secure the crash site and hostile Somalis were converging on the area. Mission commanders denied Gordon's request twice, saying that the situation was too dangerous for the Delta snipers to protect the crew from the ground. Command's position was that the snipers could be of more assistance by providing air cover. Gordon, however, repeated his request until he got permission. Sergeant First Class Brad Hallings stayed to provide cover.

Shughart and Gordon were inserted approximately 100m from the crash site, armed with their sniper rifles and sidearms, and made their way to the downed Blackhawk. Chief Warrant Officer Mike Durant was already defending the aircraft with an MP5 but was unable to move from his chair due to a crushed vertebra in his back and a compound fracture of his left femur. When they reached Super Six Four, they extracted Durant and the crew members from the crash and defended the aircraft. It is believed that Gordon was first to be shot by the mob, which had surrounded the crash site. Shughart retrieved Gordon's CAR-15 rifle and gave it to Durant to use. Shortly after, Shughart was killed, the site was overrun and Durant was taken hostage. According to Michael Durant's book 'In the Company of Heroes', the Somalis counted 25 of their militia dead after the firefight."

The "SR-72" has already existed for decades, it is/was known as the SR-91 Aurora and the public will probably never see it even long after it's retired. To think the US military is going to openly display it's way-above Top Secret aircraft is asinine in this day and age.

The one and only reson I would want to be the president of the US/stupidly high ranking military official/someone working at Area 51... Just for the sheer curiosity factor.
