Spending cuts in the States means no more Blue Angel's, and Thunderbird Air demo's at Airshow's for the rest of the year. Hopefully the money that they cut will be used for the right means. Budget cuts ground Blue Angels, Thunderbirds - CNN.com |
Hello from the frozen tundra of Cold Lake, AB. Today is the anniversary of the STS-1, the first ever shuttle launch. A new era in space flight began on April 12, 1981, when Space Shuttle Columbia, or STS-1, soared into orbit from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Astronaut John Young, a veteran of four previous spaceflights including a walk on the moon in 1972, commanded the mission. Navy test pilot Bob Crippen piloted the mission and would go on to command three future shuttle missions. The shuttle was humankind's first re-usable spacecraft. The orbiter would launch like a rocket and land like a plane. The two solid rocket boosters that helped push them into space would also be re-used, after being recovered in the ocean. Only the massive external fuel tank would burn up as it fell back to Earth. It was all known as the Space Transportation System. Twenty years prior to the historic launch, on April 12, 1961, the era of human spaceflight began when Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth in his Vostock I spacecraft. The flight lasted 108 minutes. Pictured here: a timed exposure of STS-1, at Launch Pad A, Complex 39, turns the space vehicle and support facilities into a night- time fantasy of light. Structures to the left of the shuttle are the fixed and the rotating service structure. http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/7...ed_946-710.jpg Impressive / scary demo of the C130J Hercules' capabilities at the Paris Int'l Airshow. Flying like this in war time is one thing, but I think this guy's pushing it a bit hard for an airshow. The kind of hotdogging that reminds me of the B52 crash. A nice documentary on the B2 that the US now has two of on alert should North Korea decide to commit suicide by attacking American allies. They now have a new bunker buster bomb, a 30,000lb'er, that can punch through 200ft of hardened concrete and THEN detonate. Apparently the B2's can carry two. Good luck Kim! A six part series on the USAF PJ's (Pararescue) was recently aired on Nat Geo. Pretty good, part six is pretty rough. Here's the first episode. |

Posting to thank the pics and vids and to hopefully get us closer to a new page that isn't 20' wide. And my military career will finally be "starting" July 24th when i'm scheduled to go on Phase II flight training with the Harvard. |

April 18th marks the anniversary of the four soldiers killed in a friendly fire incident when a US National Guard F16 bombed them near Kandahar, Afghanistan. Coincidentally, also the day JTF2 suffered it's only loss of a soldier when he was electrocuted on a tower performing surveillance. RIP all: Canadian Heroes www.canadianheroes.com http://img847.imageshack.us/img847/2...aper789967.jpg |
JD, any more info that JTF2 soldier? |
jtf2 electrocuted. fuck that sucks. that's like a god accidentally killing himself... Poseidon tripping and landing on his own trident. |

Well American spec ops usually tell families their love ones died in a training accident if they died in a "Black" operation, so who knows if this case is the same. |
