hey guys.. was wondering if you know about the new shaw gateway?

Shaw Gateway Experience

i believe its similar to how the optik tv works...Damn! shaw should have come out with this one before and introduced the broadband 50/100 earlier too.. i woudn't have switched to optik tv ... :( this looks pretty interesting.. record up to 6hd at once and connect up to 6 tvs too... with optik tv vdsl2 profile.. i think its only 3hd/1sd or is it 2hd/1sd...

lilaznviper 07-10-2011 09:06 PM

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that's Shaw's new IPTV service. It looks to me (from a quick glance of the site) that it's just a new set-top box with those new features.

I don't see any mentioning of recording TV shows with your mobile phone, etc.

Though I am aware that Shaw is planning to roll out their IPTV service in the near future, and is currently running trials with their current employees.

And it's 2HD/1SD with Telus. Like I mention in the other post, they have a poor infrastructure for their current Optik TV service.

So I'm thinking of getting Extreme when I move to Winnipeg this weekend. How does it work with the modems (Have only dealt with it at home, never had to start a new plan myself)? Do they give you one if you don't want the SMC wireless one?

willystyle 07-14-2011 05:54 PM

I believe they've phased out their Extreme service, making way for their Broadband 50 plan. They will provide the SMC modem.

trip 07-14-2011 09:35 PM

no.. xtrme is still around at $29.95/6 months. $49 bundled/$59 stand alone

metal.. send me a pm. i can help set you up with services when you move.
wait times this month has been extremely high :)

skholla 07-14-2011 09:43 PM

telus' optik tv sucks balls... limited to only a couple tvs, crappy hd picture quality, your internet speeds take a hit while watching hd, also contracts... really, contracts, really???

this new shaw gateway service is intriguing. will it be the same shaw picture quality and contract free? does anyone know if it is still cable based or ip based? also when is this service launching in vancouver?

on shaws site it says this... "The Shaw Gateway Experience is currently available in Calgary and Edmonton, but it will be coming soon to other areas. Stay tuned for the
launch in your area."

don't purchase it
  1. shaw will not add equipment onto their network if it's been bought from an unauthorized location
  2. the sb6120 was only ever rented from shaw, there's no current way to purchase it
  3. if you do somehow manage to get the modem and call in, they won't be able to add it onto your account easily. they'll have to get it escalated to another department to add it in manually as the codes don't exist anymore for any csr/tsr to add it in for you

sorry, i forgot to specify that i'm using the motorola docsis 3 modem

if you're using the docsis 2 modem, it'll only go up to 25 Mbps. if you have a higher package, they'll give you a docsis 3 modem instead

there's no current method that i could think of for you to get the discontinued modem

from what i understand, the gateway is cable based

they've mentioned the possibility to be able to record from your phone.. but that's later in the future

the interface to the gateway is quite different and looks a lot better compared to the older digital terminals

i have yet to hear anything about iptv from shaw

it should be the same picture quality

there's no contract to it

it's rumoured to come out by the end of this month for the rest of the shaw systems

i have telus optik, and HD is nowhere near as good as OTA, but pretty much the same as shaw hd that iv'e seen at my friends houses. my internet speed does NOT drop while watching hd. i pretty much always have a tv on and i get my full 15mbit down.

contracts for cheaper/free stuff. if you don't want a contract, it's just regular price.

i'm very happy with my optik. it's completely opposite of when i had telus dsl 6 years ago or whatever. i was hesitant to make the switch from shaw to them, but am glad i did.

terkan 07-27-2011 04:16 PM

is it even worth complaining if my internet speed is only 15-20mb on all speedtest ever even though i'm on bb50? i've been doing speedtest daily on different speedtest sites and i don't think i ever broke 21mb download even though it's advertised for 50. so i'm only getting 40% efficiency out of it =\

Purely 08-08-2011 07:33 AM

Did anyone get their new modem from shaw for the 50mb upgrade? I was suppose to get one in mid-july.. but they had no stock, so I rescheduled to today. I woke up early today to wait for the technician to come, but they are out of stock AGAIN till september.

Ulic Qel-Droma 08-08-2011 06:12 PM

How, exactly? What did you say?

i didn't say anything. sorta. i did 0 bargaining.

all i said was, shaw has a student deal and im switching over.
the lady sounded nice and said um lets see what we can do for you. and she said 16 bux a month (for 6 months only). but then again i can call em up 6 months later and threaten them im switching again.

i have a feeling its not just the threatening im switching over. its also cuz im in a building with fibre optic.

my friend did the same thing but only got 23 bux or something cuz he lives in a residential area with no fibre.

mind you i was actually gonna switch to shaws 100mbps, but i lied cuz i knew telus couldnt offer 100mbps, and they presented me a deal i couldnt walk away from. so i took it. it's basically free man, 16 buxs a month is chump change.
