btw we are currently with shaw for the last few years (5+ i dunt remember exactly)

i would go the telus route because of the contract. i enjoy my freedom with shaw and the ability to ditch them if they piss me off and dont make things right.

the only way i would go with telus is on a 1 year deal with free pvr rental and a good bundle deal.

You make it sound like telus isnt a good choice and you would only choose them under certain circumstances lol

skholla 06-15-2011 08:34 AM

Oopps I meant "I would not go the telus route"....

I believe that their HD picture quality is inferior to shaws, also signing a 3 year agreement for basic/essential services is ridiculous.

I would only consider telus when the HD PQ improves and a great deal pops up on month to month or on a 1 year agreement.... That way if they pissed me off half way through I wouldn't mind paying them off or touching it out for 6 months. I can't say the same about a 36 month agreement..

broadband 50 is 50mbps down 3mbps up with 400gb limit compared to extreme at 25mbps down and i think 3mbps up still. stand alone price is $74.90 but if you bundle it with regular tv and or phone it's +$59. or if you bundle it with the shaw personal planner thing for TV it's flat rate $84.90 i switched my normal tv package to the SPP i think i pay about 5bux more than before with internet and stuff but my limit is now 400gb with 50mbps i watch everything on internet anyways

strykn 06-27-2011 02:22 PM

Oleophobic 06-28-2011 11:48 AM

yeah they are short on the motorola modems
I think when I went to switch up my modem they only had 3 left.
That SMC one sucks ass IME, weak signal and keeps disconnecting. Tenants started complaining about not being able to connect. After switching to the motorola one and using my existing Router instead of the SMC router/modem everything is back to the way it was signal-wise.

I believe Shaw is gonna get a newer modem (not sure if it's Motorola or something else) this summer so you should be able to switch your modem then.

Did you change your upload settings? I'm not sure how to make it go back to normal but you can google it easily.

When my tech came (2 weeks ago), he said the SMC one was the newest one that just got released, and that I got lucky because I got the first of the new batch.
Was he lying?

This is the one I got.

thats a pretty nice results! Wish telus would increase the speeds for optik high speed turbo to 50mbps from 25mbps... Also, the optik turbo has a data cap of 500gig which is way bigger than the broadband 50 of shaw ...Hopefully when telus has the 50mbps package they would have 1tb or unlimited bandwidth per month...

The WiFi modem (SMCD3GN) for the Broadband 50 package is not 450mbps, and yes you will need a new modem.

If you want to buy your own DOCSIS 3.0 modem, call them and make sure it's compatible with their network. The only other DOCSIS 3.0 modem that I know that work with Shaw is the Motorola 6120. Unfortunately, they don't give these out to customers anymore cause they are MUCH better than the SMC Network SMCD3GN shitboxes.

I overheard the other day, which was about 2 weeks ago from a service rep at Shaw Tower and the installation guy, that all of the WiFi modems for the Broadband 50 package were out (SMCD3GN), so I suspect that you are lucky if you managed to get a hold of one.

I'm probably gonna shell out money for the 250 unlimited package when it comes out. Mmmmmmmm unlimited internets at sexy speeds.

No idea. When I exchanged my SMC for a Motorola since I wanted to use my existing router, the guy told me they will be getting a new modem in the summer. Of course that rep could just be saying that and he may not know the exact details.

I asked a installation tech about the Motorola, they said they've stopped installing them.

Oleophobic 07-05-2011 07:29 AM

The motorola I got is an old modem and I guess they don't have any left.

When I first called in about switching the SMC they mentioned they are getting some new modem (don't think they mentioned the brand) in the summer and that I could wait for that or I could try to exchange my SMC with their older motorola modems at the Shaw office.

When I got to the Shaw building in downtown the guy just told me he'll try to find the motorola and that they should have some left. Turns out they do have a few and I got one.

The SMC may not be all bad. It's just IME the signal was kind of weak in my house compared to my existing router and I get disconnected every so often. That plus tenants complaining meant I had to do something.

willystyle 07-05-2011 09:08 AM

The SMC Networks configuration settings are horrible, it lacks many features, and there are some settings that I cannot change cause it's locked down by Shaw.

strykn 07-05-2011 09:41 AM

I still can't upload on Utorrent :okay:

terkan 07-05-2011 01:44 PM

lol the smc router is a pos... the wired works fine but the wireless don't work right

the losers told me they don't give out the motorola even though i went up to the downtown office and talked to them on the phone.. i damn know they do i used to work there.. wtf.. they fuked up my entire network at home with their gay ass wifi gateway

willystyle 07-05-2011 02:41 PM

What would be a good DD-WRT N-router to pair with the SMC modem?

My WRT54GL cannot handle the 50Mbps throughput. :(

StylinRed 07-05-2011 04:31 PM

I'd guess one of the new dual-band ones

like the Cisco/Linksys E4200
Cisco ships dual-band 450Mbps router | Crave - CNET

$160 at bestbuy or it was

and yeah i was planning on ordering a Motorola 6120 from Amazon or something its $82 though + shipp :/
