Japan get earthquake pretty often. They probably know there is going to be a fault line that could crack and built the road on two halfs to minimize a split in the road that cars can fall into.

Getting under a desk is the stupidest thing you can do during an earthquake.

This looks very cool.

Japan brings us a lot of cool things, hopefully imports from them don't get severely hurt. i.e. prices rise cause stocks are short. But, from the looks of things they are taking it very well which is nice to see cause im pretty sure anywhere else in the world there would be the complete opposite.

I see some hypocrisy going around, because I've seen "troll" or "lighten the mood" posts in other world event threads from others and no one really says anything about it, maybe even a few thanks. But, when it involves someone you know or something that impacts you its not okay. I understand that we all <3 japan but don't start telling others to shut it when some of you do the exact same thing in other threads.

You've obviously never felt an earthquake before. It's common sense that getting under a desk will protect you from falling debris like light fixtures, ceiling tiles, books, etc. and it's the quickest action to take when you're panicking during the event of an earthquake. Others recommend staying under a doorway frame as well.

I watched a documentary on their airport and its actually sinking a certain amount per year, so the entire foundation is on these screws that they just unscrew yearly to keep it level (think of it as in inverted threaded stud, and the airport rests on the bolt. As you undo it, it raises). So no, I highly doubt its safe

It's actually safer to go in between 2 points like a triangle because if the roof comes down, it's more likely that those 2 points will prevent you from getting crushed, sitting under a desk will cause that desk to get crushed guaranteed.

ex: In my room, Theres a small space inbetween my bed and my desk, It's smarter to crouch and cover inbetween it.

Essentially, if you are worried about some books hitting you, hide under a desk. If you are worried about being crushed by your roof, hide under your desk.

edit: This is what I was taught when I was in Greece, where housing standards arn't the same, and buildings do collapse.

I think he just read the controversial "triangle of life" method of earthquake survival and it has stuck with him, ie curling up beside an object rather than crawling under it. I think I'm going to go with what the authorities recommend on this one and just to duck, cover and hold.

i've always thought Japan was a bit of a precarious place to stay especially the concentrated population. Man I hope the people of Japan come out ok. I heard over the radio that there was a tanker or some ship that was out at sea that carried over 90 people that went missing due to the tsunami. Cars were being washed out near the waters.

I'm so not prepared if a disaster hits. Time to stock up on sealed food and clean water. Anyone wanna make a group trip to costco?

The prep for a quake in JAPAN is completely different than what we are taught back in elementary school. Regardless, awareness is needed for these events, and if you look at how Japan keeps their systems alive, they play music thru a city PA system everyday to make sure its in WORKING ORDER. In an event that a quake happens, well, the PA works to direct and coordinate the next move.

Friends in Japan have told me that earthquake safety procedures and awareness are part of intro packages when you start work within a company. Its VERY WELL ORGANIZED.

How quake proof is this city? im waiting for the media outlets to let us know. A story like this is likely to come up within the next few weeks.

Let this be a wakeup call to educate the people on the importance of quake preparedness.

Jesus, before showing how edumacated you are on earthquake safety, read what you type out to yourself and see if it makes sense to you. So sitting under a desk will cause the desk to collapse? Yet, you boil your essential point down to a situation that if you're scared of either your books or your roof falling on your ass you should sit under a desk that would get crushed as a result of you sitting underneath it? :failed:
