I saw one of these on the road for the first time. The styling isn't earth-shattering, but I think it will age very well over time.

Dropped by Open Road Scion Port Moody this afternoon to take a look, there were a bunch of people waiting for a test drive so didn't want to bother with the wait, but got a good look at the car. It looks amazing in person in the pearl white color, makes me want one even more.

MrGoodbar 06-08-2012 04:43 PM

Test drove one, and mine is available for pick up next tuesday. I test drove the automatic transmission and it still gets some good pick up. Didn't like the automatic. I haven't driven an automatic car in ages so I honestly don't know the answer to this question, but is there supposed to be a thud from the transmission when the car downshift back to first and comes to a complete stop? Not that it affects me since I bought the 6spd manual transmission but for potential buyers of the automatic version.

Absolutely. It's the car screaming to be put out of its misery. It's knocking on the hood asking you to drive a stake through the block.

Energy 06-08-2012 06:11 PM

Why would people even buy an automatic version of this car? Should have been all manual or a dsg a least.

CorneringArtist 06-08-2012 06:41 PM

^ Does flappy paddle gearbox count :troll:? IIRC, the auto is derived from either the IS-F or LFA, I don't remember which.

$28K High-Performance Two-Door Comparison
Cheap Thrills: Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ Face Off Against the Ford Mustang, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Mazda Miata, and VW GTI

With the average transaction price of a new car in the U.S. at just under $31,000, it's tough going for many an American auto shopper. And if you're a prospective buyer of an "enthusiast" car, whose extra horses and performance parts tend to inflate bottom lines up to the top shelf, the outlook is even grimmer.
Or is it?
The launch of the Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ twins has poured a double shot of buzz into the bang-for-the-buck tumbler. For well under 30 large, these two 200-horse coupes offer the tried-and-true formula of front engine, rear drive, and low weight, but add to that a limited-slip, summer Michelins, and a Nuerburgring-tuned suspension. Any questions?

But rather than compare just the Scion and Subaru, we gathered today's hottest two-doors -- the refreshed 305-horse Ford Mustang V-6; the 274-horse Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T; the 2500-pound Mazda Miata, the benchmark for fun; and our front-drive champ, the twin-clutch VW GTI -- to crown the best driver's car, with stipulations that each start at around $25,000 and cash out below today's average transaction. Thus, the subsequent six machines boast average base and as-tested tickets of $24,640 and $28,523, respectively. Better yet, their statistical means -- 0-60 in 6.0 seconds, quarter mile in 14.7 seconds at 95.8 mph, 60-0 in 116 feet, and lateral acceleration of 0.93 g -- make this half-dozen comparable to a 1995 Porsche 911 Carrera 4. Whoa.
To set fast laps at the Streets of Willow Springs, we put hot-shoe Randy Pobst behind the wheel of each. And after the tires and brakes cooled, we evaluated the six on our demanding circuit in Malibu. When the dust settled, one two-door left us cleaning out our garage. - Ron Kiino

I also think one modification that will be very popular is a new flywheel. It felt way way way too heavy for the power of the car.

that's a very common thing on Toyotas. they traditionally use a fairly heavy flywheel, even on their sports cars.

Where did you purchase FR-S? I put a deposit down two weeks ago and I gotta wait two months

:okay:

I test drove the white one at OpenRoad Port Moody. The automatic transmission really ruins the car, IMO. D mode was terrible.

my celica is auto (had it for 12 years) and compared to the auto frs, in terms of performance, I'd take the FRS. Now Why would one want an auto? everyone one has their reasons.
The paddle shift on the frs is quick and responsive between gears. I was impressed. It succeeded where my e-shift Celica fell short.

But there are other factors to consider like practicality. the frs has virtually has no trunk space and leg room for back seats. My celica can fit a canopy, chairs, tables, etc all in one go; ask any rs mod for an eyewitness account ;) and my celica can fit two passengers in the back (if ever u need to give friends an unexpected lift home).

but definitely I would imagine the manual transmission frs would be wayyyyyyy more fun to drive, just like a manual celica.

FRStan 06-09-2012 09:11 AM

Any of you guys got the upgraded audio?

FatalCloud 06-10-2012 12:47 PM

fr-s automatic very responsive..but mid-top end the power drops off, couldn't really test the handling, car didn't seem outrageously light, yeah backseat area almost no room, trunk space is alright/doable, very deep but height?wise is small. interior is ok, cheap toyota plastic.

Same here with my AE86 hatch....The amount of space in the back is uncanny for a sports car.

Regularly used for Ikea moving duties when other cars fell short. Until the Cube came along. :fullofwin:

JoshuaWong 06-10-2012 02:51 PM

the auto is the same as the IS-F, albeit with 6 speed instead of 8. Its plenty good enough but it dosn't work as well as in the IS-F for whatever reason. I still prefer a real DCT like the one in my M3.

Its still a very fun car with either tranny because, all i find myself doing is throw/fling the car into corner at every possible occasion... everything else just dosnt really matter :fullofwin:

jACEDesignsLtd 06-10-2012 09:43 PM

My celica was SO spacious when the back seats were folded down. More trunk space than my wife's big camry.

Also there's prius tires on the FR-s, no? I heard that this was done on purpose.. so you can.. well you know

StylinRed 06-10-2012 10:51 PM

yeah the trunk in the celi is excellent

does the frs/brz seats fold down?

wstce92 06-10-2012 11:32 PM

I'm having a real hard time trying to decide between a decent AP2 S2K and a Scion FR-S

mb_ 06-10-2012 11:39 PM

Buy both, LOL

Yea, they fold flat. Not a lot of height in the trunk as you can imagine but it's deep enough with the seats down to fit 4 wheels for a track day.

wstce92 06-11-2012 12:17 AM

are any of the dealerships requiring a deposit to test drive?
