It's not a navi... the Scion premium stereos are these Pioneer units with a large touch screen on them

gilly 05-14-2012 08:49 AM

You can finally build and price the frs on the scion.ca website now

Nabatron 05-15-2012 02:13 PM

Spoiler!

Oh God, I hope that's a joke...

death_blossom 05-15-2012 11:25 PM

a convertible? oh crud. I guess they're trying to milk this car for all its worth. :\

hk20000 05-15-2012 11:36 PM

Something to go up against the market now monopolized by the VW EOS I guess...

StylinRed 05-15-2012 11:37 PM

well toyota came out with a convertible concept + trailer for the celica but they never made one

lets hope this holds true for the frs ;)

edit: oh im sorry the trailer hitch concept isn't the same as the convertible they call the one with the trailer the "cruising deck" ;)

so yeah hopefully just another concept that doesnt make it :D

Over9K 05-16-2012 08:27 AM

The FR-S convertible looks surprisingly good...

I still hope it doesn't make it to production.

Alpine 05-16-2012 10:13 AM

I thought the FR-S/BRZ was supposed to be about handling... and now they want to chop off the roof and make it into a convertible?:failed:

sonick 05-16-2012 10:16 AM

Granted traditionally a coupe would handle better than a convertible, don't forget one of the best handling, and best selling, sports-cars ever is a convertible.

godwin 05-16-2012 12:18 PM

Convertible can sell for a higher margin (target US), minimal reengineering cost.. I rather they do that and have the whole model range sell for a longer period and other manufacturer like Nissan and Honda come back to the pure sports car market. That's just the reality of business.. at least chances are it will be like the GTI Cab, we won't see it here officially.

I remember seeing the factory name "High-Tech Two Tone" for the panda paintjob in Gran Turismo 1. Pretty cool that it's being brought back.

You're jumping the gun a bit. It's not like they are replacing the coupe with the convertible, you want good handling go buy the hardtop... those who want the vert probably won't be taking the car tracking and drifting. It will probably be a bit heavier than the coupe and marginally flexier, but I can't see its well received handling and low COG being compromised that much with the vert. This will eat into the Miata's monopoly of the small convertible RWD and offer the flexibility of 2 extra rear seats if needed. Pretty smart on Toyota's part IMO.

I wonder how similar the side profile of the convertible FR-S will be vs. the coupe. Not a huge fan of the looks with the top down, but when you are in the driver's seat you don't see what it looks like from the outside anyways. The driving experience a convertible offers is unmatched by anything else really.

CorneringArtist 05-16-2012 05:52 PM

Convertible would probably be an alright move considering the last one Toyota had was the Solara I believe.

satek 05-16-2012 05:58 PM

Hopefully they won't pull a nissan (240sx vert) and only make automatic verts

The_AK 05-16-2012 06:11 PM

Isn't the Audi R8 convertible actually better than the coupe due to it's reinforced frame? Or was it some other convertible? Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Tetsugen 05-16-2012 06:29 PM

Don't get what all the commotion is about, Toyota has always made convertibles of their sports cars, they even made a GT-4 convertible back in the day.

If you're talking about the S2K, that car was DESIGNED as a convertible, not a coupe and chopped off.

No.

Reinforced so it's not as floppy like an old man's wet dick.

I think sonick was referring to the Mazda Miata. but s2k also fits in there. and I agree, both those cars were designed/engineered from the ground up as a roofless vehicle.

UFO 05-17-2012 01:50 PM

According to this they didn't just chop the top off and call it a day: Convertible Scion FR-S On The Way For 2013?

Quote:

Previous reports have quoted Toyota's lead developer for the 86 project, Tetsuya Tada, as saying the car was designed from the start to be both a coupe and a convertible, meaning the groundwork is already there.

Over9K 05-17-2012 08:23 PM

ASC did the same with the 240SX Verts, still floppy as fuck.
