edit: found a good review here Asus Eee Pad Transformer Vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

I have a 10.1, it's much thinner and lighter than the eee pad and screen is more vibrant. the material is also better and feels more solid. im using it with their OEM book cover case, feels like the first actual premium tablet comparable to the ipad 2 (but much better).

IMO, The popularity of this thing at these firesale prices really shows how HP knows nothing about what they are doing.

Why launch the thing at 499, and 599?? What features did it have to try and price it the same as an iPad? If I were an HP executive, I would've gambled and offered these things at 199 and 249... they wouldn't still sold like hot cakes. They have to flood the market so there is a market for apps, then perhaps do well on a TouchPad 2.

Personally, $200 is the very max I would pay for tablet, b/c $250 or even slightly less than that is already netbook territory.

To the mass market, it's not the $99 price that even makes it attractive, it's the fact that it USED TO BE $399. If they opened it at $99, taking a TWO HUNDRED DOLLAR LOSS on EACH ONE, they would be REALLY fucked

LiquidTurbo 08-24-2011 02:31 AM

^ Perhaps. All I know is, if the ASUS EEE transformer or the Galaxy Tab was $99, I'd pick one up right away.

But you're probably right, the mass hysteria was the fact it used to be more $300 more.

That, and also the 'bandwagon' effect..ie. "Everyone's buying one, I better get one too!"

SkinnyPupp 08-24-2011 03:04 AM

As I mentioned earlier though, this does make it easy for someone to do a $150-200 tablet, if they want. But don't expect it to have a dual core 1.2 GHz CPU and IPS touch panel.

While I agree that they have no idea what they're doing, they did basically bring their user base up from several thousand users to several million users literally over night. If they want to lease/sell webOS, it just made it much more attractive to both hardware and software developers.

how it is compared to the 7"? our company tested the 7" and we really liked the size (very portable) but didn't like scrolling when browsing, it was fuzzy and took a half a second to refresh.

I don't agree.

You can pickup some Android tablets for $250 and they are NOT selling well. The ONLY reason this sold well cause it was $99 and people like a deal. Anyone grabbing one for $200+ is dumb, there's tablets with better support/apps that are almost as good at that price point.

Its the same reason the Kindle started selling like hotcakes when it was priced at $139 from $399, except Amazon actually figured out how to be profitable at that price.

This I do agree with. Some manufacturers sell their hardware at a loss to make money on the software.

One thing I noticed is that there has been a lot of tv commercials for the HP touchpad ever since the weekend when they dropped the price on them and everywhere is sold out.

Even my c-lai and older fobby co-workers are asking me to help them get a touchpad since they heard from friends/family/radio/news talk about how HP dropped the price down to $99 even though they know nothing about computers/tablets.

So if this is all a marketing ploy by HP, it is working.

I don't think it is a marketing ploy when they are losing hundreds of dollars on each touchpad (components apparently cost 300 bucks a pop). Plus they are losing out on a 1.4 billion dollar deal that they are ultimately dropping support of. This is not including the millions in marketing on a dead product.

I have the Galaxy Tab 7" one as well. It's snappy and fast once I upgraded to a gingerbread build and custom rom. It's an awesome size and I loved using it. The pixel density should actually make the 7" sharper than the 10" tablets. It does look a bit sharper when I compare it to my Xoom.

SkinnyPupp 08-24-2011 09:58 AM

This one looks more realistic

SkinnyPupp 08-24-2011 09:59 AM

I think for my wife and her dad, WebOS will be fine. We'll see... I won't want to start messing around with Android until they get a really good stable build. Plus anything before Honeycomb isn't really that suitable for tablets anyway, so I'll wait for ICS before bothering.
