If they are asking $300, they really need to give their heads a shake.

Ask yourself this. Do you really need a tablet. If all you are going to do is surf the net and stream movies, why not get a 10 inch net book? I never played with the playbook so I can't comment on it.
What about buying one of those knock off tablets that are running on Android 2.3?

no i don't NEED a tablet, thats why i'm looking to spent the less amount of money as possible.

I don't want a netbook because I already have a laptop that i can whip out if i need full capablity.

Does the knock off tablet actually rans smooth and worth the money? My dad brought a really cheap viewsonic 7 inch tablet and man is that a piece of shit. No multitouch, cant ran flash smoothly at all (i mean dial up age choppiness) and worst of all it only has amazon app store which on that device only shows a total of 20 available apps.

I would love to try out all the tablet ,tp, playbook knockoff android before i make a decision but i don't think any store has the tp on display, and just my luck everytime i walk into a store wanting to try the playbook its out of battery or broken.

did some research on the amazon kindle fire, seems like it will be severly cripple outside of US...

What are you going to use it for ? That will be a huge determining factor ...

Mobile ? Playbook
Browse internet on couch ? Touchpad
Games ? PB has slight edge in content now, but TP has larger screen and better sound
Communications ? TouchPad
Reader ? I'd lean more towards the PB because of the size, but TP has the Amazon store and some people like the larger size for reading
Video ? PB has a nicer screen, HDMI output, and more supported codecs, but TP has a larger screen and better sound.
Work ? LOL, don't even bother

You don't really need to try out the TouchPad. It's pretty solid and operates very similarly to the Playbook (Playbook's OS completely ripped off many of the design cues from webOS)

i will be using it for things in this order

streaming movie WITH flash -> browsing -> video on the table no need for output -> reading .cbr cominc files -> the very occasional games (prefer to play it on my iphone anyways)

looks like tp is a better choice? the the tp stutter at all during flash streaming?

I've never had a problem w/ stuttering flash streaming on my TP.

My Dad watches TSN a lot on his (full length CFL games in HD) and hasn't reported any problems to me.

^ thanks sounds like tp is the right tablet for me. now to find one that is reasonably priced. I guess there is no more brand new tp at the fire sale price in stock anywhere?

edit: i use mac only. would getting file back and forth from tp to mac is frusturating? i don't expect itunes syncing but will i at least be able to drag and drop files?

Hondaracer 11-06-2011 04:09 PM

TP works like a USB thumb drive super easy to transfer studf

nice so i just pick a tp for myself. enjoying it so far does everything i want it to do. Does anybody know where to get cheap cases/stands for it? is a screen protector needed for this device?

underscore 11-07-2011 06:04 AM

I got the Zagg screen protector, a cheap stylus off Dealextreme and one of those folding cases off of eBay (it turns into a stand). If you don't want the folding part I'd say don't bother with a case.

threezero 11-07-2011 08:12 AM

yea I just want one for the stand will te iPad ones work?

SumAznGuy 11-07-2011 08:35 AM

I'd pay a little bit more and get the HP one. It's think enough and folds into a stand.

Oh yeah, and get the touchstone docking station. I love mine. No more wires to plug in to charge the unit.

And for the price of the unit, I didn't bother with the screen protector. I'd prolly be getting a new tablet in a few years when the battery on the TP dies.

Got my wife an Ipad last christmas, and in less than a year, it is quite obvious the battery isn't as strong as it was when new. Before, it would last 2 days of use between charges, now it is just a little over a day with similar usage.

You should be able to find the original HP case for cheap which folds into a stand and the TouchPad will fit any of the ORIGINAL iPad cases (not the iPad2 cases), as well.

are the OEM HP cases still available in store?

SumAznGuy 11-07-2011 03:04 PM

I know NCIX had a sale on them in a package a few weeks ago. Can't hurt to try going there first or try HP.ca to see if they still have any.

Vansterdam 11-07-2011 05:04 PM

look for the target truss leather case hp touchpad

best case for the price you can prob find it for 20$ and under

which stylus do you guys recommend for the touchpad

was looking at a couple from dealextreme but not to sure which one is good

Hondaracer 11-07-2011 05:35 PM

someone on here had an iPad2 case and it fit great, I ordered one for the touchpad on eBay, was somthing like $10 with$7 shipping, looks and works great.

threezero 11-07-2011 10:19 PM

problem with most ipad case is that it cover the bezel and might be hard to do the slide up gesture?

the targus case looks a little too big... i really like the oem hp case but everybody is asking like $25 and up for it on CL

Jmac 11-07-2011 10:42 PM

I had the Truss case for the Playbook and it was pretty bulky; definitely a lot thicker than the OEM case for the Touchpad (and the fucking power and volume buttons didn't work on the Truss case for Playbook. :yuno: )

They might be all gone now, but I know Staples was clearing the OEM TP cases for $24.97 less Manager's discount (usually 10% - 50%). I snagged a pair for $12.49/each back in September and they still had a ton.

You should check out Best Buy as they're selling the Touchpad still (bundle offer w/ HP laptops), so they might have the cases.

NCIX has it on their website and they're showing a ton in stock (all locations), so you should be able to pricematch (and they advertise an in-store pricematch) ...

NCIX.com - Buy HP TouchPad Case - HP Consumer - FB343AA#AC3 - in Canada

These guys have it for $16.99, so you should be able to get NCIX to PM them ...

Microcad.ca | HP TouchPad Carrying Case for 9.7" Tablet PC

I won't comment on the stylus as I don't use one.

underscore 11-07-2011 11:06 PM

this is the Touchpad case I bought, fits and works great.

SumAznGuy 11-08-2011 07:29 AM

I'd say skip the Targus case. It makes the TP really bulky.
I bought my HP case and I love it.

OEM Hp case is retail for 24.99 when i bought it from the Source. Also seen them on hp website in the summer time . So if you are pay 30$ and up for OEM case, you are being ripped off.

If you can wait the new Nook Tab IMO is another great alternative dual core. powerVR SGX540 graphics and 1gb ram. 16gb internal and expansion slot for more memory

threezero 11-08-2011 09:44 PM

thanks jmac pm online got it for 19$ with tax, just need to go and pick it up :-)

after using the tp for 2 days I find that it has some weird quirks and serious limitation. Is there no way to scroll in text? For example I quote someone on a forum in a reply bug I can't scroll it down pass the quote the enter in my reply?

and is there a quick way to get back to the top of a long page?

the browser on this is seriously lacking.
