Not a guarantee - depends on whether they can crack the bootloader. Previous HP devices have proven difficult or impossible to crack. But one thing is for certain, there will be a lot more effort put towards it now!

just a heads up to people who are ordering from Staples ... they are notorious with their refunds ... their customer service is OK but their refund department is BS ... they are slow and stupid ... I had to call 5 times and waste several hours to get my money back for an item that I was charged for and never received!!!

also the phantom stock happens often don't bother with it all orders will get canceled
I gave it a shot anyways

Vansterdam 08-20-2011 09:32 PM

wanna grab me a 32gb? :P

Datsun 08-20-2011 09:34 PM

Tried getting a 16GB. Most likely going to be cancelled but hey...you never know.

As mentioned in this post, Staples.ca has been known (for years, on RFD) to have phantom stock on Saturday nights.

DanHibiki 08-20-2011 11:35 PM

I ordered one for my mom because all she needs is the basic stuff. If it was for myself I would NOT have gotten it despite it being so cheap.

I woulda felt better if I could have got my hands on a 16gb because there is no way my mom nor I need a 32gb.

I also placed an order for the 16gb at Staples but I'm sure it's a phantom stock like everyone says.

It means they expect to have stock from their supplier, and if they do, they will charge me.

SkinnyPupp 08-21-2011 12:05 AM

It's funny how people think webos is just "basic stuff" when it is WAY more nerdy than jailbroken ipads AND android.

Interesting how this came to be
  • first, HP buys Palm for $1.8bn (actually, $1.2bn and then some directly-related expenses bring it up to $1.8bn)
  • then, HP makes approx $5.1bn in 'support' acquisitions (music services, video libraries, cloud services, etc.)
  • then, HP spends $0.6bn with TV and print advertising for the Veer and TouchPad
  • then, HP discovers that it's going to take another 'several hundred million dollars' {source: earnings call} to achieve tenable position in tablet market. Hmm, spend another $0.7bn to get value out of $7.5bn investment? Obvious solution: pull plug, burn bridges, walk away.
  • at the same time, HP's CEO decides he wants HP to be more like SAP. Oh, did I mention that HP's current CEO is the former CEO of SAP? And that he was turfed from SAP for diminishing shareholder value?
  • so, HP announces that it's going to buy a software company that sorts e-mails for $10.4bn - approx 35x earnings. Analysts estimate value of company at about $4bn
  • the market responds by selling HP stock like it was bubonic plague. Drops 22.6% and still falling...
  • Estimated value wiped out in 48 hours on stock alone: $13.9bn
  • Estimated value lost in Palm acquisition (so far): $7.5bn
  • Estimated value pissed away on 'Autonomy' purchase: $10.4bn
  • Total amount of money wasted: $31.8bn
  • Likely cost of inevitable shareholder lawsuits: unknown
  • Value of lost reputation, lost opportunities, etc.... Priceless

Senna4ever 08-21-2011 01:42 AM

If this story is to be believed, it was the hardware that stopped HP software engineers from innovating beyond a certain point. WebOS runs twice as fast on an iPad...?

HP tested webOS on an iPad. It ran over twice as fast. - TNW Apple

Sorry I don't quite understand this point, can you elaborate on it?

Ronin 08-21-2011 02:09 AM

Basically HP wasted a whole lot of money.

They blew a shit ton of money developing the Touchpad, etc and then because they didn't want to spend that that last 10% on marketing (probably just to get started...), they shut the whole thing down...which started the downward spiral. HP has now dumped a Saudi prince-worth of money down the toilet and will probably continue to do so unless they can put out something world-breaking soon...or at least announce something that people can get excited about.

I don't know why they bothered in the first place. They never had a chance in hell against the iPad or Android with this crap.
