HP TouchPad Buying/Hunting thread

Who else has a Touchpad? Any good apps to share? Currently have Preware installed and looking for new/more apps to put on.

!MiKrofT 08-16-2011 12:53 PM

I didn't realize people actually bought it. HP's been advertising it on TV in the states a lot though.

Jmac 08-16-2011 04:04 PM

HP is supposed to be providing a $50 app credit for Canadians soon, so I'm waiting for that before I go purchase apps for it.

I've seen people who have supposedly got Ubuntu up and running on it (along w/ OpenOffice and Wine), but I haven't found out how they've done it or if they're just fakes.

roastpuff 08-16-2011 04:34 PM

I got employee pricing, haha. That's why I jumped on it.

Best Buy has better pricing than we get though. :(

Ch28 08-16-2011 04:46 PM

There's pretty much NO apps for the Touchpad :( The Youtube "app" just sends you to the site. Facebook app is slow.

Hopefully they'll release a major update soon to help optimize the speed

DC2aDDicT 08-16-2011 04:49 PM

Really? I got staff discout aswell the employee pricing last week was actually cheaper at futureshop. Either way im impressed with that thing multitasking, easy to "jailbreak", fast and the speakers are unbelievable! Apps i have so far are developer mode activator (so u dont have to do that secret code), preware, couple of games, tune in radio, fb, and yt.

I have a 32gb and gonna overclock it to 1.5ghz tonight!

overclocking with uberkernel and govnah is so easy. The tune in app is pretty good, but it reminds me how much I hate local radio because of the ads. I want a sat radio app - I have Sirius from my car's subscription. I also found it can play the mixes at fratmusic which are pretty decent.

The Facebook app is decently fast on 3.0.2 and after o/cing to 1.5ghz everything is much snappier.

Best Buy Has 200K Unsold TouchPads, Wants HP To Take Them Back

G 08-16-2011 10:54 PM

^I don't think its for Canada. Probably for the states. All I know is, apparently Vancouver is sold out of hp touchpads cause of numerous pre-order employee discounts given to lots of companies.

We kicked out a lot of Touchpads at work the past few days, and a lot of them were employee purchases.

Not as many as iPad launch day, but not bad considering the non-Apple-ness of the Touchpad.

goo3 08-17-2011 02:44 AM

how much was employee purchase?

It was 30% off @ Staples - additional $50 for owning a Pre (technically not in Canada, but I complained to HP and they obliged), so $230 for the 16 GB ...

Oh and the 50 GB online storage = win

!MiKrofT 08-17-2011 10:01 AM

So the only reason they're selling is because of the massive employee discount and it's mainly staff that are buying them? That's not really the sign of a good product.

I hope it doesn't end up like the playbook.

G 08-17-2011 10:06 AM

Well it's not just selling. Some companies are already almost sold out on stock BEFORE launch date. I heard that bestbuy/futureshop employees got insane discounts (over 50%) but only limited to 1 per person. That pretty much caused 0 supply for the actual launch date lol.

roastpuff 08-17-2011 11:05 AM

We got 50% off but are allowed 2 per person. What I heard was that BB/FS got close to 70% discount.

A lot of BB/FS employees who resold their Touchpads got canned I hear, haha.

No wonder I'm seeing these brand new in box ones for sale on craigslist.

parm104 08-17-2011 12:27 PM

Yup, I was grilling a guy on Rev earlier who got one as a "gift." Coincidentally he got the gift the same day we got our employee pricing initiative.

By all means, take advantage of your employee discount to use a product but to take it and then resell it for profit is just plain stupid, in my opinion.

HP's strategy here is to have employees own their product so they can get a proper feel for it and be able to sell it better. It makes sense to me. As an avid tech guy I'm always buying stuff at work and I'm one of the few people who can actually speak for the product and tell customers how it ACTUALLY works...Rather than simply READING about how it works on the box.

The promotion was on for 2 days only. It was extremely difficult getting one in the first place because it was being sold out at EVERY best buy and future shop. 50+ units per store being sold each day.

For my workplace, the promo is on until the end of August.

Hmm the hardware isn't that spectacular. Seems the only thing really nice about it is the IPS screen and the speakers. I really like inductive charging idea though.

I just ordered a Moto Xoom yesterday so I'll be playing with that instead. Maybe when the Touchpad 2 comes out things will have moved along a lot more.

Why buy one? Why not just have a few "loaners" that staff can take home for a couple days to try out?

It seems stupid to me that an employee should be spending their own money to learn about a product they sell for a company, just so they can make that company more money.

I bought the Playbook on launch ... The Playbook is a piece of shit; the Touchpad is not ...

Loss Prevention, for one ... No corporate LP department for any major retailer would ever sign off on that ... Also, every retailer has a return policy, so it's not as if you can't simply use it for a week or two and then return it.

It's pretty much expected at my store that employees should purchase any major launch product (I've purchased and returned the Playbook, Transformer, and iPad2; still undecided if I'll keep the TouchPad or not ... My last day is next Thursday, then onto Power Engineering for much more $$$) and return it after 1-4 weeks of use. That way we can gain actual knowledge of the product and we are able to help customers if they come in with questions instead of just redirecting them to a 1-800 number.
