My gf is the same and we were in a similar situation only reason she needed a car was because her new job requires going from location to location. With a budget topping out at $15k, we ended up with a Nissan kicks. It has served her well for the past 6months. It’s not the best looking thing out there but it’s easy on the eyes with warranty so cost of ownership isn’t high.

What are y'all thoughts on what's a good depreciating car to commute to work/leisure.
The days of spending $5-10K on a cheap, reliable, beater with under 150,000km are gonezo. You do a few repairs and that $3-5K in maintenance + tires + brakes easily justifies the cost of a new one. | Say hello to a car that started at $55,000 MSRP and is now $17,000.
I give you, the 2017 BMW i3, w/ Range Extender! And it's at Parkshore BMW, not even some back-alley dealer.
This one's got a full leather interior too. It has about 150km of EV range but also has an ICE.
My wife has the full-EV version and she loves the hell out of the car. Has an impossibly tiny turning radius, and the interior is pretty roomy for such a tiny car. Because they pushed the axles to the very ends of the bumpers, like Mini. The visibility out the massive windshield is also nuts, it's like looking out a helicopter cockpit.
Also, exposed carbon everywhere. Roof, doorsills, hatch.
And every body panel is plastic. Smacked a pole in a parking garage, no problem: bounced right off the door. I just had to buff the yellow paint transfer out, good as new. https://www.autotrader.ca/a/bmw/i3/n...0615183616521/

If you go with $25-30K range, the new 2025 Civic Hybrid is getting really positive reviews.
If you are considering $22-24K Elantra, I'd seriously give a used Prius Prime a look.
$10-!5K used ... I wonder if you can find a decent Toyota iM hatch or a decent low kms, Golf TSI

Originally Posted by whitev70r $10-!5K used ... I wonder if you can find a decent Toyota iM hatch | I have one and owned it since new and do not recommend it for several reasons:
1. Oddball model - Some parts are not available through aftermarket (i.e. shocks.)
2. It is slow and gutless. Better options can be had.
3. While it is relatively fuel efficient, newer cars offer better mileage (I may be wrong.)
4. It's pretty boring to drive, like any Toyota. The suspension setup is neat for a car in this category but don't expect much out of it.
5. It's too reliable. Nothing breaks on this car. Be prepared to die of boredom if you are used to European vehicles. I hate this about the car the most. All I've ever done are two oil changes a year.
Bonus: It is made in Japan and has electronic folding mirrors. No car in this price range deserve these two because it defies all logic. J-VIN and folding mirrors? GTFO.
If you want to just get a car that will get you from point A to point B safely and reliably, find something else. This will do the job, but I still don't recommend this car. My opinion is that there really are better options out there for that price range. Just wait for Badhobz to return his GTI. In good conscious, I never recommend Toyotas to anyone because they truly are most soul-sucking cars you can buy and own. For a little more, you can get a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia or a 2005 Audi S4. At risk of sounding judgemental, anyone who buys a Toyota has a few loose screws in their head.

. | My thoughts are even if they say they don’t care, they can still tell what’s nice/fun and what their friends think. I’d be looking at 15-20k
- B48 Mini Cooper S (2016+?)
- Mazda 3 GT, soul red
- Fiat 124, late NC, or early ND1 Miata
- JK or early JL wrangler
- 986/7 Boxster or Cayman, non-S
- or a Beetle
Beware the engine rebuilds that seem common on NC miata, early Pentastar V6, and S model Porsche.

It comes down to if you want to take it to the mechanic for repairs at $150-$200 an hour... that's the thing that kills car ownership. If you can do the repairs yourself, cars are actually pretty dirt cheap. My $500 minivan, which is a 1993 Plymouth Voyager 5 speed manual, I put over 40k on it since I bought it during COVID as my main transport vehicle, and all it has cost me has been $10 in brake pads, oil to top it off, and recently a headgasket which was easy to do and a fuel pump which could not have been simpler. Total cost to do both under $100. Van has like 270k on it I think now. That 2.5 4 cylinder and 5 speed manual will be still running in 100 years, so simple, so reliable.
I feel bad for all of the people who get suckered in by vehicles with the Nissan CVT and some of the other cam phaser Ford vehicles where these repairs keep needing to be done and often the repairs are as much as the cost of the vehicle, not to mention dishonest mechanics that gouge the customer so hard.

Speaking of private banking. The co-founder of local Vancouver software company Jane.app bought himself a F40 and put a lift inside his James Bond lair so he can raise the car from one floor to another. This is BEFORE his company just got valued for $1.8b this past week ( https://betakit.com/jane-software-to...ary-financing/).
Safe to say he has a private banker and can now afford a F50 and an Enzo if he wants.

Hey it's all relative!
What if - for the ultra rich - doing something like that is basically just how you show you're a humble hoodrat?
Like, maybe in some circles, posting a hotdog on instagram is considered, like "oh nice flex bro. you have FOOD. must be nice."
