Discipline doesn’t just mean hitting though.
Grounding, taking away things they want, etc is all discipline.
I’d never hit my kid period.

Tier 3: depending on age/situation of course, but if things escalate to this level I do think some punishment is necessary. Some kids just won't listen otherwise.

One crazy ass girl I was with briefly said she would never punish kids in anyway, shape or form. She was of the thinking that no matter what age, you can get them to understand (lol good fucking luck). She wouldn't even consider Tier 2 because she said it never worked on her growing up.
Under 4 it's really hard to talk sense, especially if they are already at a state. You can't talk sense into a crying kid. You can't even talk sense into a crying adult half the time. Some kids can be scared into stop crying, but that's not a healthy precedent.

My concern typically is less with the punishment, but whether if you follow through with things. Every kid is going to get punished one way or another even if the parents say they don't. Any time you say no and have to take away something it's going to be a punishment to the kid unless it's anything goes in the household which I would find it hard to believe.

What really matters is there are consequences rather than punishment. Sometimes it's a natural consequence - I said to not throw the toy, and it's now broken because you hucked it clear across the living room. Or I asked them to sit down while eating ice cream otherwise they are going to knock their ice cream over, and lo and behold, the bowl ice cream is on the ground. The other side of that coin is artificial consequences. You can watch TV once you've completed these worksheets to the best of your ability, if the worksheets aren't finished then TV privileges are taken away for the week. We check retroactively after dinner giving them ample time to figure out their shit. This teaches self regulating responsibility and letting them learn to make their own decisions on how to time manage with simple tasks.

The natural consequences works for all ages, while the latter are more complex and works with older kids who have developed the sense of reason.

lol ask any kid would they rather have a “beating” or have their devices/privileges taken away. You’d be surprised with the answer.

I think every kid needs different things, at different ages, to different extents, depending on the situation.

This means - imo - trying to be a good parent means always doing your best to read your kid, to understand where they're at. Then tailoring your approach to help them be somebody they'd be proud of when they're grown.

I feel like just the fact that you think it should be hard, means you give a shit. Which probably means you'd make a good dad .

i was reading this at the dinner table tonight waiting for food to come out. i was grinning like an idiot head down looking at my phone. gf caught me and asked what was so funny, i showed her my phone without context. she comes back with "how does it feel to be childless and porscheless?" i reply with "i really need to buy a porsche its cheaper than having children" my dad jumps in with "wtf are you 2 talking about?" filled him in on the convo and he said "i came to canada with nothing, didnt speak a word of english, bought a house and a porsche while raising you. whats your excuse?"

today i am thankful for all the ball busters in my life.

128K USD sold out till 2027. 20 min flight time.

Something like 1200 companies are working on EVTOL's. Larger ones going to be a game changer for flights from and to the Island.

911s have gotten so expensive that an AMG GT63 coupe looks like a bargain in comparison.

So i took the wife to that outlet mall at the airport on sunday evening, after we had a huge AYCE sushi dinner at this new place in richmond (very good by the way! just pricey at 88 bucks per person https://maps.app.goo.gl/uNz7hQjNLAqQ8DBq9)

We discovered the entire outlet mall was full of brown people. like literally 90%. All the staff in stores were brown, all the shoppers were brown. Is there some sort of a festival going on that requires them all to shop? ive never seen it like this. Im glad to see people spending money, although it looks like most of them were just walking around and not buying anything, but this was nuts. literally looked like a city in india.

Isn't it all relative, I heard my parents speak of interest rates for mortgage in the 12-15% range back 'in the day'. Regardless, if someone who came with nothing, worked hard, bought a house, raised a family, and got a porsche. That's pretty damn good.

It’s definitely not relative. 15% on a 60k mortgage with a 40k income is a lot less difficult than a 4% mortgage on 600k with 80k income.
Still, good for them for being successful back then with little resources but nothing is close today for someone starting from scratch, or even with a leg up compared to then.

Credit where credit is due, but his dad isn't asking for a pat on the back for his accomplishments. He's busting his kid's balls for not doing the same as him.

Without even factoring in luck/timing, just happening to work in the right industry at the right time, here's the first search result for Canadian RE vs wages:

Quote:
According to Statistics Canada and data compiled by Better Dwelling, real home prices in Canada increased by over 163% from 1981 to 2024, while median real wages for full-time workers grew by only 24% during the same period. That means home prices have risen nearly seven times faster than wages over the past four decades.
I'm sure someone can provide price increase for Porsche over the years.
