just upgraded from internet 25 to 150, this baby rips! all set for new battlefield 1! spoke with retentions and they hooked me up. |
My MacBook Pro defaults to 5G, but the thing with 5G is it slows down the farther you go from the modem. In some cases, you're better off with 2.4. I tried switching and testing it. Sure enough, when I go to the farthest reaches of my house, 2.4 is better, as in more stable. In my den, I'm hard wired and it is at 170 all the freaking time. Highest ever was 180 something. Upload is the same wired 5G, or 2.4 at around 20 to 25. Seen it as low as 15. On WiFi 5G in close proximity to the modem, 130 to 180. 2.4G is pretty fast, too. I don't stream, torrent or anything that requires this kind of speed, but everybody else in the house appreciates it. I'm installing a bunch of smart home devices..... or whatever they call the stuff. Modem is upstairs, so got me a second router for the downstairs back end of the house. Shaw will activate or turn the one or more of the four RJ 45 ethernet ports on the upstairs main modem to bypass mode. Can have different IP address and shit. All Chinese to me, but if it increases range, why not? My Ring doorbell will work better. None of this would have been possible if I had the old sub 20/2 service, lol. EDIT: Just read TOPEC's post.... walls and shit screw 5G signals big time. I moved the modem into the hallway this morning and it's like night and day. Location, location, location............. lol. |
lower frequencies have an easier time penetrating walls... |

question on the Shaw 150 offer to current subscribers I got that offer for $80 for 2 years including the advanced wifi modem rental. I'm interested in signing up for it...but if I sign up for it, would they replace my current wifi modem with the newest one? Will I get charged for it? |
you bring in your old modem to the shaw store anda they give you a new one |
^they really don't care about the old modem as they're just going to recycle it(rep told me on phone). I had my new modem mailed to me and I've still yet to return my old one |
If you care about performance, use a separate router and access point instead of AIO solutions. Especially if you are going for max speed. The higher the bandwidth consumption, the more CPU power the router needs. Quote:

Just switched to Shaw 150 here and the speeds are insane. No more lagging on csgo whenever someone streams a video :fullofwin: |

So I would stick to there product. And forget about your aftermarket router. SeemsGood |
^ that sounds like an anomaly, or something was messed up with your router. Your unbridged speeds are what I get bridged. Granted I haven't tried the new box in unbridged mode but given how horrifically shitty the old one was I didn't see the point since I already own a high end router with loads of features. Quote:

the new Hitron modem i picked up came with the return label so i slapped that on the box of my old one and sent it off what router are you guys using? |
ASUS RT-N65U as recommended on here, NCIX had it on sale when I got it. |
Personally if you're looking to buy a new router, there's no point in sticking with an N-only router unless you plan on upgrading it again in a few years. If you're looking for bang for buck, the TP-Link AC1750/1900 routers (Archer C7/C8 I believe) are almost always on sale for under $100, especially if you wait until Boxing Day (as they were for Black Friday). I personally picked up an Asus RT-AC68U from Staples for 170, but ended up returning it for the RT-AC1900P which is an updated faster version of the venerable 68U. I have nothing but excellent things to say about the Asus, and most networking sites tend to concur. Of course, that's just my 2c. It depends on what you want and how much you want to spend. |
Anyone in Shaw that's slow in Richmond terra Nova area this week during evenings? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Anyone having internet problems around Magee? |
|
Been cutting in and out for me these couple days Marpole area |
got cut out a few times last night. was annoying as hell |
people are watching porn beware |
This Telus/Shaw/Novus promo is not really about selling the speed. They might say it this way but rather is more about bandwidth. Most of the NET100/150 comes with 1TB of data which most people will never reach but people do reach 400BG to 550GB and up these days with streaming mdeia Netflix, Apply TV, various apps ppl use to watch TV shows, movies etc etc. Once the year promo is up and ppl went back to their cheaper package they are going to have a hard time adjusting to the bandwidth cap. So either people end up adding the unlimited bandwidth option or upgrade to the next tier of internet. Even though CRTC is trying to have no cap internet package which do exists already. If you go over the cap you get might shut off for a few days or up to the night package. ISP aren't forcing you to upgrade, you just lost internet for a few days or they lower your speed till end of month. |
speeds are down a bit for me the 2.4 band especially...i did notice more traffic within my townhouse complex on my analyzer so that could be the case on the 5 band i used to be the only one in my area, now there's like 4 other ones |
Shaw fucking died again. Get your shit together if you're going to charge so much. |
East Van not a problem since I got hooked up over a month ago now and my infrastructure from the pole is hella old. Really happy with the service so far, Shaw btw |
