Addition to first question, how far down do you bring the barbell? I'm 6'1 and it feels slightly awkward bringing the bar all the way down to the ground because I get the feeling like I'm going to hurt my back and I've always been told "lift with your legs, not your back". Any insight?

you're probably rounding your back big time if it hurts

deadlift is lower back, glutes, and hamstrings mostly and another thing is a deadlift is NOT a squat

a deadlift is a deadlift because youre lifting a dead weight from the ground. it starts on the ground, you pick it up, and then put it back down on the ground. and repeat.

You can do partial reps halfway down your shins IMO.

EDIT: I started off with 35's on each side cause i was scared of the lift.

started with 135, 45s on each side
felt that i could lift more, so i went for 225
i did 225 for a few reps so i tried going for a 1RM and did 265 for 2 reps, could prob do 285
now i'm scared to raise the weight lol. gonna take it slow
friends are scaring me with myths that deadlifts will stunt my growth and i'm tempted to believe it LOL and i'm already pretty short

Yeah those are called Romanian deadlifts (form is a bit more different than that, Romanian is mostly hamstrings)

RS Deadlift Crew representing like crazy here. I bet we have a higher ratio of deadlifters to curlers than most boards.

but stay safe everybody. DLs are one exercise you dont want to rush on. things can go bad for life if you're pushing yourself too much. remember... its not just about the numbers.

yeah when you first start deadlifting your lumbar is going to be sore, after a while you don't notice it unless you're doing it with bad form

I felt it go *pop pop pop* there once. Got sloppy at the end of a set... didn't take time to reset between reps. It was pretty sore that night but luckily no serious damage was done. It was definitely a wake up call.

I know the feeling, I had to give up dead lifts due to an injury as well.

Frustrating as hell.
