I tip cause its good karma. Theres no harm in tipping at all. I make decent money so i dont mind sharing it with the people who work hard for it. My first job was a dishwasher so i know how thing work in restaurants.

To be fair, the place I leave a tip is a small, family run business and I show my appreciation in kind.

I always do 15% (unless intoxicated) unless the person is a real dick or one of those pricks that tells me the price of every extra like I can't afford it or something I asked for extra cheese, I didn't ask for the price of the cheese

Pickup it depends. IE when I go whitespot pickup I'm usually pretty specific about how I like my burger so I'll tip because it was a hassle, otherwise If I'm picking up a pizza or something f- that.

Took words exactly out of my mouth. People deliver way superior services there without any tips. On the other hand, fucktards here expect tips for such shitty services and attitudes they bring. Talk about standards

if ur doing pickup, ur paying them for their hard work in preparing the food and the ingredients, and ur taking their hot food, putting it in your shitty car, transporting it to your stupid home, and eating it half-cold and not as good. As a tradeoff, you get to not tip them. I think it's fair

Tips are built into the wage standards of North American servers and kitchen workers, though. I assume in Japan the wage standards are higher to reflect the lack of tipping, and that is in turn reflected in restaurant prices?

I don't tip for take out.

I do notice though that more and more take-out food places asks you if you want to tip on their debit/credit card machine.

Personally, I find it annoying and I always press 0 upon seeing that option.

Either way, I find the tipping system is garbage.
It's like the restaurants are too cheap to pay their staff accordingly and expect the customers to make up for it.
If a waiter/waitress is getting tip for serving me, then I don't why fast food worker's not worthy of being tipped too.
It's ridiculous. If cooks are getting part of the tips, then why aren't they getting tipped for take out? etc.

Doesn't seem consistent, and it's sort of like "It's just the way it is"

Everyone is working hard at their job. The reward for doing a "good job" is not getting fired,
and eventually getting promoted to a higher position. Otherwise, every job out there should get tips for good work and service.
I mean waiters/waitresses are being paid to do their job. Their job is to serve.
So how does serving well deserve anything extra from the customers?

Every time a tipping topic surfaces, this clip comes to mind.
Rips the words right out of my mouth, and explains it in a much better way than I would be able to type it out.

I personally still tip 10%, and that's my max. I already don't agree with tipping, and I don't think they deserve tips,
but only out of guilt, I even bother to tip. And I always learnt to tip since that's the society here (where I grew up),
so it's just what everyone does. But principle wise, I still think it's stupid.

Are these specific take out restaurants? Or are you taking out food at a restaurant?
I personally never encountered this before, but maybe their debit/credit card machine
is just set up to have the tipping option programmed in whenever a purchase is made.

I do 10% to avoid hassle. I think one time, I was in a group, and we didn't tip 15%, so that sushi restaurant forced us to a standstill until other members paid. I think the culture towards tips seems to be that as customers, we're required to pay tips even though tips are meant to reward good service. My bias comes from the fact that I dine at a lot of lower-end restaurants.

Getting tipped is a privilege, not a right.

If I get takeout, I haven't gotten any service, like filling waters and bringing my food and taking away my plates etc.

Therefore, I see no reason. When you go to a store and order some computer parts, do you need to tip it when they bring it to you?

So why is food any different?

Take out - never

Dine in, always pay 10% at least . Some restaurants ( chinese owned mostly ) are still cheaping their employees with below minimum wage $10.25 / hour because they can. I used to work in a restaurant where some employees are $9.00 because apparently liquor serving waiters/waitresses can be paid as low as $9.00 legally. Fucking bs .

No. And it bothers me when servers insist that they deserve their tips.

A few months ago there was a thing in The Sun that said that British Columbians are the lowest tippers in the country, and did this little survey of servers on whether or not they thought they were getting tipped appropriately (in their minds). They said no.

The kicker? The average getting tipped was between 16 and 17%.

Now, don't get me wrong. You work hard for me, you're extra friendly and make my dining experience good and I'm more than happy to tip you well (up to 20% depending on how busy it is and how picky/needy we are). On the other hand, if you offer average service in a restaurant that's not that busy and you're not that attentive? Don't be surprised if you get 5%.

A tip is a tip. it's a bonus. It's a kindness I am providing to you for working so hard for me, above and beyond what your boss may normally expect.

If you're giving me takeout and you expect a tip for bagging and boxing what I called in to order 20 minutes ago? I think not.

And for the record, I used to work as a busser. And yes, I do leave my change every now and again in the starbucks tip jars, but not usually. But that's mostly 'cause I use my starbucks card.

Some good responses. I guess I tipped out of guilt myself, but didn't realize that it wasn't standard or customary to do so. no more tipping on takeout for me!

When you tip a percentage on the debit machines, is it the percentage of the overall bill or before taxes?

Never tipped at those automated tip-asking machines. I'm only a regular at the coffee place near where I work (amazing burgers, pastas). It's run by one guy doing the waiting, cooking, cleaning etc. Usually leave him 1-2$ considering the stuff I order usually runs me up only 3-5$.

I will not tip for takeout out of principle because I am not getting the same level of service of being in a restaurant. However, if they offer to serve me a cup of tea or water while I am waiting, I may be inclined to leave them a dollar.

When you pick the percentage option it will tip on the overall bill so it's kind of a "scam". I'm just sure it's all in the programming or something. Pick the $ option instead and choose your own amount or if you pick the % option just put in a lower number to compensate.

^I Believe most of the time its tipped after taxes which is why i only tip 10% from now on.

I used to be a 20% tipper but then i realised i was just throwing my money away. I used to do alot of free work at my job and was sometimes rewarded with a case of beer or doughtnuts, that was about 3-4 years ago. When the rewards went away so did the percentage of tips when i went out to eat
