A good friend runs a junk removal company. My god some of the shit he has to pull out of these absolute (what once were) mansions, and the disrepair they are in is insane. It's quite sad the lack of respect these people have for their homes, and themselves.

The average hoarder was a mid/late age single Asian person. This was typically just shit like news papers, soup containers, kitchen literally filled with shit on the counters to the point where you couldn’t put a plate or a cutting board down. Typically though where they sat or slept was cleared and it was usually OK in terms of cleanliness. I’d still walk in with muddy boots over even consider taking them off but it wasn’t just filth everywhere and bugs etc.

The worst cases were almost always white people though literally living in absolute filth where I’d just walk out. Of the worst of the worst I’d say 75% were white and the other 25% were Asian people who had legit mental illness like you should be in an institution type problem.

A lot of the Asian hoarders are cultural, and also the way they grew up. 60's, 70's, and even 80's in HK was not an abundant city for everyone, nevermind when we talk about places that haven't taken off like Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. Even now, HK is a two tier city, those who can, and those who can't and it's very clear the moment you take a bus into the older centers.

The white people born and raised here though, not as much excuses as the post war period boomed for decades, and definitely some mental needs there.

I think more often than not it's usually someone single and can be traced back to grief, or just being incapable of caring for themselves when that person is gone. People certainly weren't as versatile in their roles in a household in some prior generations.

My FIL is passionately cheap, seemingly regardless of sacrifice to his family, and a mid-grade hoarder. He did grow up poor in HK. But if you look at his siblings though, they're nothing like that.

I'm guessing his brothers were able to adapt and rewire for changing circumstances, but his brain's just kind of stuck in the old patterns.

Once the power in our condo in North York got messed up, and after Toronto Hydro fixed it each unit breaker needed resetting. It was Sunday so only one (TFW) concierge, when I went down to pick up a package there were like ~5 older Chinese women upset and harassing the concierge because they still had no power.

I offered to go to their units to reset their breakers. 3/5 units were exactly as you described. It was like... "clean" hoarding. Piles and boxes of the most random useless stuff, stacks of takeout containers, etc... with like a little path to get from the bathroom-kitchen-bedroom. It was pretty sad. I had to move piles of crap out of the way in one unit to even get to the breaker panel.

Tariffs will die down to 10%. Equities are recovering so the people who have money to buy will be in a position to do so. They might not buy for investment, but it's the buy to live in buyers.
