The economic situation is a lot more bleak for most people that you'd first guess! My time spent exiled in shit living conditions while navigating backwater places and towns of rubes.... I got to see and know the struggling of the people. What a spiritual journey.

A few weeks ago, my parents had a bbq and they invited their neighbours over. One of them drives a Panamera + Model Y and the wife was talking about how expensive vacations are now, and she was talking as if she was poor and had no money, but just came back from europe and bought a new Chanel bag.

And the most annoying part for me was that some people at the bbq didn't have a lot of money or go on expensive vacations, I guess she wouldn't know that, but still.

So I just made the joke, "Oh man, you probably have to sell the porche" everyone laughed, and the husband lol'd and said, well we don't have to go that far...

To be Devil's Advocate, a $2M - $3M house is not as liquid as say cash in the bank. Their rental income could be put towards hidden expenses we aren't aware of, but I'm only saying this to stir discussion.

Naturally, people will protect their interests and by complaining, it's one way to garner sympathy from others to be relatable.

OAS+GIS should be based on net worth, force the seniors to sell and downsize if you can't afford to upkeep it with liquid investments.

Luxury tax is also stupid, paying additional taxes on a $55K+ car when you already paid 30-50% tax to obtain that income.

Folks who "struggle" on OAS/GIS/CPP when they live in a $2m+ home get no sympathy from me (and my parents and in-laws both live in $2m homes) - they should either reverse mortgage the thing or downsize. They already get a super generous gift from the gov't in being allowed to defer their (ridiculously low) property taxes once they hit 65 (a completely bullshit policy) AND they've managed to win the lottery with the huge tax free gains of owning a home in a HCOL area.

My dad, being an old man with early stage dementia, will sometimes gripe about taxes and the gov't and I always call him on that bullshit. He gets so much for free now as a senior despite a net worth not too far from mine (in the millions).

I thought boomers don't get much oas/ gis unless you've been here for 40+ years? And it gets reduced quite a bit as it's house hold couple income. Also since all their $ is in gics generating extra income it will further get reduced. As returns are fully taxable since they pull out all rsp by 65 to try to gis.
