Boating at night is hazardous to your health.

westopher 08-15-2025 08:44 AM

Yeah at that point I’d pay and extra $200 to be in bed by 10. My how things change as we age.

Unless there is a motor involved, that can be healthy at any time of day... :fullofwin:

Last ferry is fun and games until they cancel it:accepted:

JDMDreams 08-15-2025 09:09 AM

This. Even without the labour shortage with BCF, the very chance of being stuck due to weather makes things iffy. If you tried to get on a 5pm ferry and the rest of the night is cancelled you still have a chance to find some accommodation, missing a 10pm sailing... :lawl: good luck.

The $2M home is not cash flow, therefore not real.

The East van senior can't sell therefore is more poor than the $200K Working prince george guy :suspicious:

It doesn’t make sense.

My mom comes home from yapping with all the seniors about programs they might not signed up for despite having $2M+ NW
- $20-30K/year in GIS/OAS+
- $520 GST rebate
- Seniors grant on pptax
- BC Seniors supplement
- BC Hydro rebates + free random kits
- Reduced dental + prescription
- Almost free bus pass
- Seniors bank accounts

She could go to the food bank because it's income based, but I convinced her that's unethical otherwise aunties would line up and milk them dry like the free salt in winter.

Hondaracer 08-15-2025 10:19 AM

It’s called equity?

You can stash it in a non-registered account and still be low income if you don't sell for capital gain / no dividends.

Given that people on RS have at the very minimum a $250K combined household income, anything less than that on this forum means you are a broke dick.

If you grew up here, decent degree, in your 30's, 10+ years of experience, very hard not to be close to $200K+ household income.

Especially since 70K in 2010 is $100K in 2025. Brother was making $30-35/hour in 2010 doing valet in uni.

Last ferry isn't that bad you old fart, you live in NV, you'd be home by 12ish.

We took the last ferry last week from Langdale, albeit a shorter route, it's nice being on the last ferry.

The boat is quiet and empty, so it's kinda cool walking around looking out on the moonlit ocean with no one around. Top it off you get a full day on your departure day to get some sun, hit some booze spots, etc.

JDMDreams 08-15-2025 10:45 AM

It's equity that you can't access cuz no bank is gonna lend you a mil with $20000 gis annual income.

Heloc, reverse mortgage, etc.

Borrowing against a paid off home isn’t difficult.

Problem with the last ferry is what are you doing UP TO the last ferry?

Unless you have plans or are staying with friends etc. typically your checking out of an Airbnb, hotel, etc. early in the day, might have lunch, etc. then what are you doing for the next 8-10 hours?

Rather just pay and be home

mikemhg 08-15-2025 11:28 AM

@West. Ya ya :lol

We met up with my sister and a few cousins that live in Gibsons at a brewery until 9ish, quick drive to the ferry from there.

Even sans that, checkout at 12, day activity (beach, lake, boating) until 6ish. Grab a quick bevy somewhere interesting, dinner at 7ish. Finish by around 9, head to the ferry line. It's Victoria, not a hard place to burn some hours in the evening.

God damn.

Fast forward to now, and it looks like they are digging out the crawlspace to increase the square footage! There was a lot of concrete drilling a few days ago, and I believe they installed two additional windows on the right side to create another bedroom or two. Now they're taking out buckets of concrete/styrofoam and hauling it away in a truck (which is constantly blocking half of my garage).

Curious how they will access this new space because the access door is short. Maybe they'll just increase the size of the opening and install a full height door.

I'm no snitch but I'm sure the city would love to know about this construction project!

Edit: Yep, they're drilling out the access door area as we speak...

Be a narc after they build. :lol

Just contacted broker, said low 100's same as regular mortgage on HELOC on $2.2M home.

$20K GIS income assumption

Badhobz 08-15-2025 05:19 PM

See the chinese would have just built bunch of bridges or tunnel that connects these wee islands to the mainland. Then the property market would explode on the island
