Of course this team needs offence but we made moves and changed the team to beat the Boston Bruins. Look how well that turned out. Now we cant even beat anyone in our own Division let alone Conference.

Rick Nash sucks

He's only useful for tournaments and then the dude disappears for the rest of the year. One of the most overhyped players out there

Hondaracer 05-07-2014 09:13 PM

yea like fuck, basically never once performed in the post season

12 points in 27 games at a -2

And realistically speaking, it's more likely that you'll hit on a #1D later on in the draft, than finding yourself a true #1C. Defencemen tend to be far more difficult to project, and the concern with Ekblad specifically, is that he's been a man amongst boys in Juniors, and what will happen when he loses that edge as an NHL player amongst other men.

Don't get me wrong iI'd love to have a Doughty or Pieterangelo but this team clearly needs offense. A good example would be the Avs taking Mackinnon over Jones.

Do you think they regret that pick?

I'm aware that drafting a projected stud defenceman doesn't always pan out. Same logic applies to all stud #1 offensive talents.

Mackinnon was NHL ready a couple years ago in Jr. Jones took advantage of smaller guys like Eckblad is at the moment. Jones was quite serviceable in his first year looking at his stats. Assuming they (Mac and Jones) both project to where they're supposed to be, I don't think anyone would be regretting their respective draft picks.

Someone like Pietrangelo didn't develop into what he is now in his first and arguably his second seasons. He broke out just as his ELC ended (much like Erik Karlsson), and there's no reason Jones (and lump in Ryan Murray, Jake Trouba, Erik Gudbranson, etc in there too) can't get to that point given the pedigree. This new generation of projected stud defencemen seem to be following their projections much better due to access to resources that guys even a decade ago never had. IMO it's much safer picking D nowadays than it's ever been.

Good discussion though. Some good points are being brought up for both sides.

Bieksa named Team Canada captain

http://www.ottawacitizen.com/sports/...756/story.html

Quote:

MINSK, Belarus - Kevin Bieksa has been named Team Canada's captain for the world championships.

Bieksa, an alternate captain for the Vancouver Canucks, is the fourth-oldest player on the team at age 32 and is representing Canada internationally for the first time.

Kyle Turris of the Ottawa Senators and Jason Chimera of the Washington Capitals are the alternates.

Coach Dave Tippett said Bieksa was chosen because of his outgoing personality and his on-ice passion, while Chimera's experience and Turris's role as a "good teammate" earned them letters.

James Reimer of the Toronto Maple Leafs will start in goal for Canada's tournament opener Friday against France.

Tippett said Ben Scrivens of the Edmonton Oilers — a former teammate of Reimer's in Toronto — will start Saturday night against Slovakia.

Kinda sad that I barely know anyone in that roster. And Reimer is our starter :rukidding:

Sad because you have poor hockey knowledge?

i don't know... i guess im just hesitant with drafting dmen so high... it took hedman nearly 5 years to become the #1 dman he is today... even erik Johnson a #1 overall dman hasn't even come close to his potential. Can the Canucks afford to wait that long? Drafting the hometown boy Reinhart would make fans somewhat excited lol

who knows... maybe Ekblad pans out :)

IIHF Team Canada teams are never stacked like the Olympics lol....

cause the best Canadian players are in the playoffs or coming off injuries from the long season

Problem is the Canucks always had scoring problems.

WCE -> Sedins Naslund -> Sedins Kesler.

Basically after the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows, we have a big group of streaky goal scorers.

We had histories of just patching up the secondary scoring with streaky type players. Samuelson, Raymond, Higgins, Kassian, Hansen, Booth, Sturm (LOL), Demitra (RIP), Bernier, Pyatt, Sanderson, Bulis, and the list can go on...

Then you look at the Hawks.

They have Toews, Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Saad, and they can come at you line after line. Their scoring threat is there.

@DarrenDreger : Hearing Boston's Jim Benning met with the Canucks yesterday. He's considered the frontrunner for the GM job in Van.

cliffhanger33 05-08-2014 10:57 AM

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Some believe Benning is getting the Canucks job and Linden is simply waiting until the conclusion of round 2 to make it official.

I feel the same way. The most recent defencemen taken first overall:
- Chris Philips
- Erik Johnson
- Berard
- Jovanovski

Vs the most recent Centers:

- MacKinon
- Nugent Hopkins
- Tavares
- Stamkos

That personal bio on Mike Weaver. It makes you love the guy that much more. 5'9", studies the opponents plays and in today's game, he saved at least 2 potential goals - great positioning.

It kind of sucks he was on for the Boston Goal, but can't win'em all.

XplicitLuder 05-09-2014 08:20 AM

France wins in shootout. Wut
