i was looking at the GOES website online and I found out they opened a new interview premise at Canada Place. It must be fairly new as the address is not posted on the website but the interview dates are as early as January 20th. For those of you on the 6 months wait..it may be time to reschedule your interview!

WOOT. Thanks, mine was at July 12th prior to rescheduling O.o

Do you shop there often? Every time I go in the morning/afternoon the parking lot is jam-packed.

The only time I dare to even go to the Willingdon Costco is ~ 7:30pm on a weeknight. Much more manageable.

nexus at the airport ftw. No one uses it, so line up is super short.

What's the maximum % of duty and tax should I be expected to be charge on a textbook?

Not sure where it's made/print...but most likely not NA.

Thanks

jing 01-12-2014 06:22 PM

I've never been taxed on textbooks, even when I declared $300+

I would hope they would be more lenient with students too. But as rule of thumb - they do have the right to tax you...and anything else is just them being above and beyond. That's why I want to prepared / have a rough idea before heading south.

I'm looking at the CBSA. I think it's just 12% tax, and no duties for 'books' in general?

Books are duty free. And from all my trips down to US for text books for the last 5 years or so, not once was I taxed. And I remember that once I got a really expensive textbook (it was over $500)

CBSA: What was the purpose of your trip?
Me: I picked up *A* textbook I ordered.
CBSA: What is the total value of goods coming back?
Me: 5xx
CBSA: I thought you said you picked up *a* book, as in single book.
Me: Yes, that book alone is 5xx. It's a set of two. (give receipt)
CBSA: Wow... I hope whatever you are studying would get you some crazy paying jobs
Me: I could only hope.
CBSA: Have a good day.

The worst part? My current job has nothing to do with whatever I studied from that book. :fuckthatshit:

We need someone from CBSA to join Revscene. Or get one who'd been lurking forever to come out of hiding. C'mon, we have zulutango representin' the popo, there must be an equivalent from CBSA.

Was conditionally approved since last week and lucky me that just now I was able to switch my May 6 @ Blaine appointment to Feb 17 appointment @ YVR

I remember in my application, a question asked me something like if my car was ever inspected before...

Anyhow in the conditional approved letter, there is a line wrote

Vehicles that must be inspected: My Car.... My License Plate....

If my appointment is at YVR, does that means, I have to park at YVR and they will walk to the parking lot to inspect my car??? I can't go without my car? Can't go by Skytrain

Can confirm this. Posted this in the travel nexus thread.

Just FYI for those who are waiting for their interviews, my girlfriend received a notification saying that there is a temporary location at Canada place now. In the drop down menu, look for 'Canada Place'.

Her interview was originally in May at the Dunsmuir location, now it's next week Friday at Canada Place.

Check it out, there were LOTS of openings.

Have you ever been arrested, address etc. Basic shit that they already know.

I used mine for the first time Saturday and the nexus line took longer then the regular lines.

I've seen that more than just once or twice. At busy times, however, the Nexus is by far, faster.

Got back from NYC and spent around $1300 over 5 days which is over the allowed limit. Filled out on the form and indicated that I was over my limit with the amount I spent. Customs officer asked what I got, stamped my form and I was on my way.

The other thing I noticed was a lot people were directed to the automated booths at YVR, I assume because my flight arrived around 1am and there's not too many officers working at that time. I opted to wait in the line because there was barely anyone in it. Seems like the automated booths take longer because some people have no clue what they're doing.

If you filled out the form and the CBSA guy collected it, you may or may not get billed later for the tax and/duty. Sometimes they seem to just collect it but nothing happens afterwards. Other times, you see the duty/tax charges coming up on your credit card statement at a later date. Don't simply assume you are not getting charged.

Huh? How would they charge my credit card when they don't have my credit card number? And usually at the airport they will call you in for a secondary screen, ask for receipts and charge you the duty. I've never received anything in the mail after the fact.

Doh~! Somehow I thought you said you gave them the Nexus good declaration form. You need to include a credit card number in that one, and the CBSA guy collects it. Once they collected it, sometimes you get charged, and sometimes you don't.

Obviously that isn't what you are talking about, so nvm.
