The Canucks are only allowed to have 23 players on the roster.
Right now, that is 2 goalies, 7 D men and 13 forwards with a spot for Hammer's return.

All the guys on the current roster is all that they can play with. Even if they sat Higgins/Kassian/Burrows/Sedins/bucket of pucks, there is no room to bring anyone up unless someone is on a 2 way contract and can be sent down to Utica without the risk of losing them on waivers (going down or when they are recalled back to the team).

At most, when Hammer returns, then they will send Corrado back down to the minors which frees up a spot for one call up.

At the end of the season, imo, is where we will start to see changes. Higgins while not performing with points, does a lot of good things defensively and on the fore check. He may find himself in a better place on the third line and his contract isn't that bad that makes it a burden to have him on the team. Same goes with Burrows.
It's Richardson and Matthais that is the most interesting as they are both UFA's at the end of this season.
I can potentially see the Canucks trading away or letting these 2 guys walk away from the team at the end of the season to free up roster spots for some of the youth in Utica.

Dorsett is also a UFA, but I see him having enough upside on the fourth line that they will keep him.

As for young guys in Utica, I am almost ready to say Jensen is a bust as he isn't exactly lighting it up in the minors. In fact, none of the youth that the Canucks drafted is lighting it up in the AHL for the Canucks.

With the twins on the decline, much like Naslund in his final few years as a Canuck, the team will be a borderline playoff team much like Calgary was for the past few years.

Wayyyy too early to call the drafts in Utica a bust. With our drafting record i wouldn't be surprised though.
It takes time...maybe if they were 22/23/24ish and still putting up jack all in the minors then they can officially be classified as busts.

I'd keep Matthias, big body who can skate and can be a factor in the bottom six. Richardson might attract some interest at the deadline but we're pretty thin on centers at the moment.

I kno Bonino is pretty young but he doesn't strike me as a top six player...he reminds me of MayRay lol. Streaky as fuck, and pretty much a peripheral player all the time.

Assuming our UFAs actually wanna come back to Vancouver...lol that might be a stretch. Coming to Vancouver is pretty much a tough sell for any FA, hopefully JB doesn't overspend.

The problem with Higgins is that when he's not contributing offensively, he's expendable. He's ok at the bottom six/pk role but we have a fuckload of guys who can do that AND contribute offensively. Hell, even Dorsett puts one away every now and then. Same can be said for Burrows but imo he's a better penalty killer than Higgins.

When Higgins is expendable, we can afford to send him down to his home state because he's easily replaceable. PK specialists aren't hard to come by, they're a dime a dozen.

We're swimming in bottom six players atm:

Dorsett 39 GP - 13 pts
Higgins 40 GP - 17 pts
Richardson 41 GP - 19 pts
Burrows 36 GP - 17 pts
Matthias 39 GP - 12 pts
Vey 38 GP - 16 pts
Hansen 40 GP - 15 pts
Bonino 41 GP - 22 pts

God, those numbers are fucking depressing lol.

I'm not calling all the youths in Utica busts as it is Hunter and Brendan's first year pro.
But I am *thinking* Jensen might be a bust as he is turning 22 this coming March and he is currently on pace for 0.67 points per game which isn't really lighting it up. Every time he has been brought up to the big team, he has done nothing to impress me.

One of the biggest issues I have with the current team is that Gillis kept trading for veteran players. They fill up roster spots, which I don't mind if they were able to produce. Everyone was hoping Booth would have a bounce back year and did nothing. Matthais has some up side, but shows very little in the point production side. Hopefully JB will make some changes this off season.

I still can't get over how they don't have a right hand clapper on their PP. Edler is a lefty and Henrik loves to position himself in the right wing half boards which makes it hard to feed the one timers.
A lot of times, you see the twins box themselves away from the front of the net on the PP so when the point shots come, the forwards are not in a position to get the rebounds.

Maybe the current team can do better, but it all starts with taking less penalties, averaging 3 per game right now, and re-working the PP and get away from relying on Edler's bombs.

If Jensen can become like a Hansen 1.5, he'd pretty much exceed expectations.

Nabatron 01-15-2015 02:32 PM

vrbata is technically the big shot...dont mind it but its not like he had an ovechkin shot. As for other right hand shot guys we have juice and weber. Would like to see weber more cause I think he is best suited as a pp specialist with his shot. As for juice his clapper is fucking terribe no power or accuracy. Might as well try frankie on the pp since he shoots right too!

Vrbata would be better suited with the twins if the canucks played more of a TB/Wash style PP. Vrbata, STamkos and Ovehkin play the same position, at the top of the circle/faceoff dot on the PP. Kesler did the same thing with he was in Vancouver.

But the Canucks want to run a big shot umbrella style PP but can rarely get the one timers since Edler is a lefty and the pass is coming from Hank and Vbrata is also a trigger man so it's hard to expect him to feed Edler with the one timer passes.

Kassian healthy scratch tonight

highfive 01-15-2015 03:04 PM

Kassian scratched tonight.

I don't think Jensen is a bust. I just don't think he's given a chance at it yet at the bottom 6 to play. But then he needs to work on his defensive game just like any other young players. Look at Horvat, can play D, given chance to play on the big club.

Nabatron 01-15-2015 03:06 PM

Horvat can play D and that is all....rather have jensen and Kassian score then play D

murd0c 01-15-2015 03:06 PM

Jensen is not a bottom 6 forward, hes a skilled player who needs to play in the top 6 to succeed and you are correct he hasn't really been given the chance at all since there hasn't really been a spot for him yet.

spideyv2 01-15-2015 03:09 PM

I don't think Jensen is a bust, either, but I don't think he'll be anything more than an average second line forward

All this talk about Kassian not being given a chance needs to stop. In order to be given a chance, you need to earn it first.

Nabatron 01-15-2015 03:17 PM

Higgins was giving a chance for how many games on the second line without producing?

LsquareD 01-15-2015 03:18 PM

Bones!

Was not expecting that lol

Pretty sure this guy isn't a legit source.

tonyzoomzoom 01-15-2015 03:57 PM

we better be sellers come trade deadline time. And none of this talk about trading up so we can do some damage in the playoffs. We are nowhere close to be being a contender at this point. Hell, we're not even good enough to be pretenders!!

Sentinel 01-15-2015 04:10 PM

Is this for real?? Finally woke up!
