not sure if i want shawn thornton here. dude is already 36 and i just can't see him backing up the canuck players like he did with boston. it would almost even be "messier" like to bring in the enemy to collect pay checks during his twilight years.

7seven 06-17-2014 07:19 AM

Thornton might be ok on a 1 year deal, but anymore than that I'd be wary.

Hondaracer 06-17-2014 07:48 AM

Thornton is a plug, he's only effective in the right system. Don't see it working wth the Canucks

Wouldn't be surprised he pulls a Mason Raymond, signs a cheap contract and scores 20 or something.

Booth was a good player for us. But for $4 million, expectations were too high.

It's just funny how the Canucks are paying Luongo, Ballard, and Booth not to play in Vancouver. Gillis not to GM. And Torts not to Coach.

murd0c 06-17-2014 08:56 AM

The free agent list isn't even that great this year, I say bring in the young kids and save the cap space for now.

Maybe Benning's "talks" with Kesler is like, we are going to buy out booth and use his salary to bring someone in that will pass to you. Who do you want Kes? Stastny? Vanek? lol :troll:

dbaz 06-17-2014 09:00 AM

Only young kids with a good chance to make the team this year are probably horvat gaunce and maybe corrado. Others are long shots, Jensen included

No.

Infiniti 06-17-2014 10:26 AM

No Vanek please! I wonder how much Gaborik is gonna get wherever he resigns..?

cliffhanger33 06-17-2014 10:30 AM

David Ebner @DavidEbner
$9-million Canucks spend in 2014-15 on people to stay away: $2mm Gillis, $2mm Tortorella, $3.2-mm Booth, $2.8-million Ballard $0.8-mm Luongo

ouch hahaha

how is Jensen a long shot?

you do know he played the last 15 games of last season and did fairly well and put up decent points right?

i think he'll have a roster spot next season

NHL Free Agents

Stastny is a solid 2 way player. 2nd line center for sure.
He's worth the money...but keep him on a short 2 year deal.

Ryan O'Reilly and the avs are once again in an bitter contract dispute.
Avs could use Edler and Canucks take ROR.

nah 06-17-2014 08:50 PM

I'd take Moulson or Iginla from UFA.

benning said he won't ask Edler to waive NTC.

As well as he did, he still needs to prove a lot. Sustainable point production over a year, and more importantly defensive liability. 6pts in 17nhl games, and 21in 54 ahl games. Yes, we can contribute his slow start to his injury, but he still needs to show a lot more. For a team who says they are going to be "competitive" he needs to put up a solid ahl year first. I'll compare his production to Jurco. Similar points in first AHL year, but next year could put up ppg, and get the call up
There's also the fact that Burrows should be playing with the Sedins again next year. As bad as Burrows did last year, he was injured, played injured, and basically thrown on the 2nd-3rd line by Torts, while Jensen got his 17games with Sedins for the most part. Burrows besides having previous years of chemistry, is also the defensive part to this line, something Jensen cannot offer at the moment.
Jensen could have a roster spot, but only if we trade Kesler(without receiving a winger), and don't sign ufa's, but that looks doubtful. In comparison to Horvat and Gaunce, he can not play bottom 6 minutes like they can, as they have greater defensive ability, and see the game better.

Link?

I remember him saying he'll ask guys with NTC's if they want to be moved/he would trade guys with NTC's if it makes the team better

Something like that.

I wouldn't say he's a defensive liability...its not like he/the line he was on was getting scored on. He has the size and skills to play/keep up in the NHL. He's still a rookie and will have growing pains (like most rookies). Hopefully he can learn and adapt quickly. I wouldn't mind seeing him in the AHL.

Same thing with Horvat and Gaunce. There is no point in putting them in bottom 6 minutes. That does absolutely nothing with their development. We've seen it with Kassian when he was on the 4th line/bottom 6 when AV was the coach. How can he (and Gaunce/Horvat/Jensen) develop/put up points when they're not given roles to succeed?

Rather just have Gaunce & Horvat with their junior clubs/AHL where they'll have more minutes for development vs 4th line minutes that does nothing for them.
