if it doesn't drop on a wired connection i'll probably sign up for a couple of years

either way, it never occurred to me to try with a wired connection so thanks for the suggestion!

Couple of questions.

Is the price in USD?

My Shaw internet drops connection every so often. (I have a WiFi router). Say I've got vpn going and I'm downloading a torrent and the net drops and connection is lost momentarily but reconnected after 30 secs. Am I compromised?

Depending on your torrent client, you can setup for socks5 proxy in the client itself so it is always going through the proxy.

6o4__boi 09-15-2015 02:26 PM

i use utorrent

though i'm thinking of trying out vuze

willystyle 09-15-2015 10:19 PM

Try Qbittorrent. Pretty solid.

SkinnyPupp 09-15-2015 10:39 PM

second QBtorrent. Avoid utorrent, it's filled with adware now (the installer at least).

goin back to my original question

if i have PIA and I use Qbtorrent through the socks5 proxy and my internet disconnects for a few seconds and reconnects again, am i compromised?

Or in this case, does going through the socks5 proxy prevent that from happening?

SkinnyPupp 09-16-2015 07:36 AM

It will always go through the proxy, as long as it's set up to work that way

6o4__boi 09-18-2015 03:54 PM

meaning i can't be compromised if i'm downloading something and it disconnects then reconnects again?

SkinnyPupp 09-18-2015 06:26 PM

If it's set up correctly, all that traffic will be routed through the VPN

Anybody find a good server to connect to?
Even when connecting to Seattle, I'm losing ~30mbps...

SkinnyPupp 10-23-2015 10:35 PM

You can test them all here:

https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/network/#

I get 20-22 mbps using US West, from Hong Kong, and a full 30 mbps through Singapore. Ttheir HK server sucks though, so the closest server isn't necessarily the best choice.

I actually use it quite a bit to improve streaming from Twitch.. For some reason a direct connection is very laggy sometimes, and running through Singapore VPN fixes it.

Damn it. Pay for vpn and it looks like popcorn times is gone

ForbiddenX 11-04-2015 06:03 AM

Going through a proxy isn't the same as going through the VPN though is it? The data is not encrypted when it goes through a proxy whereas it is through a VPN. Unless it's different for the socks5.

Trying to find a torrent client with a built in VPN unless I'm understanding the proxy/vpn difference wrong.

SkinnyPupp 11-04-2015 06:36 AM

Proxy server just means it's going through another server before going to the destination, etc. It may be encrypted or not, it depends on the service.

If you use PIA, you will have access to their servers through SOCKS5, which will be encrypted.

QBTorrent supports SOCKS servers, although I've never tried that myself.

If on a private tracker, you'll have to make sure the tracker is using your PIA IP address, otherwise you won't get credit for uploading.

FerrariEnzo 11-04-2015 06:47 AM

do I need to setup SOCKS5 or its auto after installing the app?

SkinnyPupp 11-04-2015 07:09 AM

You generate a password and login (separate from your main one) in the customer portal

So far so good for me, no letters from shaw etc

NHL Game Center is fucking stupid though..so let me get this straight, you promote "watching your team anywhere" yet I can't watch Canucks when they are on sportsnet when I'm not using the VPN..and when I have the VPN set in California it says I cannot watch from that region..so basically I can't watch a game anywhere

Did you try using the VPN connecting from Toronto? Might work?

Socks 5 proxy's are encrypted, unless stated otherwise. If you're paying for a proxy, it's encrypted.

Proxy's are commonly used encrypt specific application(s). VPN's encrypt the entire device.

Hey skinny, so i can use this in Hong Kong and Shenzhen? Also, is it 1 pc per subscription or 1 router per subscription?

Toronto didn't work because it typically bounced to New Jersey, but selecting the "north York" location worked!

SkinnyPupp 11-30-2015 03:48 PM

If you use their connect tool, you should update to the latest version. A vulnerability has been patched.
