I don't understand how people can cheer for someone that is backstabbing their biggest and best trading partner. How someone can cheer for a person that touts nothing but lies, and goes on about how Canada is ripping the US off when that is entirely untrue. Or how someone can blame us for being weak, that essentially we deserve to be taken advantage of when it is the bully that is being unreasonable to begin with.

On the tariff issue, the read I am getting is -- the Trump administration is directing resources to "further study" the impacts of how a Canadian retailiation will affect the US. Depending on how the study plays out, it could mean anything from the tariff no longer being a priority, to a gradual phase in, to a straight up 25% slap.

It is insane how stupid this tariff is. It is something that hurts your partner and ally. It is based on a deranged person's completely warped understanding of how economics work. But here we are... FailFish

I don't agree we are lame AF. We can inflict some noticeable, but obviously non-fatal, harm on American profits and living costs if both Ontario and Alberta are willing to stop energy exports to the US. Whether the bully will care for the resulting harm is another thing though. And obviously, we have a traitor among our premiers who is not willing to stand up for Canada too.

Our oil exports are absolutely a meaningful source of income for the US. US refineries take our crude / bitumen and process them into petroleum products to turn in a nice profit.

The problem is -- Sellout Smith -- now this legitimate name calling based on true, established observations -- is unwilling to play ball. So how do we go about doing this without Smith's cooperation?

Without Alberta's cooperation, it would be a major PITA to have an export ban, with time and money being wasted at the federal courts.

Not all Albertans are stupid, and there has been plenty of criticism from fellow Albertans about how Smith is singing a different tune than the rest of Canada. But I wonder how much public pressure will be needed before Smith would agree to the Team Canada approach. I am not even certain there would be enough pressure from just within Alberta.

Smith is out of her league and has no clue what she’s doing. Remember Trump’s catchphrase, 'drill, baby, drill'? Well, that’s exactly what he’s likely to do which is increase domestic production so the US isn’t reliant on oil imports. This is bad news for Alberta.

The only saving grace for us, as you mentioned, is that many US refiners are designed for heavy crude, which is what we export to the US. If Trump focuses on boosting light crude production, that might work in our favour. But who knows what he’s actually going to do at this point?

Most of them are just edgelords who have no idea what is even going on. They get turned on by the fact that people are aggrieved or worried about the future, and feel the need to jerk off to it in front of everyone.

I would also argue that a lot of these people have no hope financially and basically have an "I don't give a fuck" mentality. It's basically a "burn the house down and everything in it" attitude.

People would rather "own the libs/left" than think rationally because it's about winning. Many see the world through a zero sum lens, particularly that the pandemic basically brought people to the brink.

Well, US doesn't necessarily *need* our oil. They are the world largest oil producer and it's ahead of Canada by a big margin. (13M BBL/day vs. 5.5BBL/day). If anything, Canadian oils are attractive because we have pipe going down and it's cheap. But as some already mentioned, without AB's support, it's hard to do anything on that topic.

Our trade volume, although similar in absolute numbers, it's got far more weight on Canada than the US. US accounts for over 60% of our total trade, while we are only a tad under 15% of US total trade.

We have a lot more to lose than US if trade just suddenly stops completely. It wrecks havoc in Canada but might make a slight dent in US but nothing US can't work around.
