man I like MDZ but that late penalty... smh

bit of random thought too, I remember thinking we got shafted trading away Cory Schneider for #9 pick Boho but look how that's panned out... in GMMG we trust!

Not knocking Horvat or even GMMG... but I don't think you'd get too far in the NHL waiting 5 years for every move you make to finally come around in your favour.

Bouncing Bettys 11-18-2018 12:20 AM

Unfortunately, 5 years is all most GM's get. Not to shit on Horvat or MG, but at 9th overall, you can't expect such a pick to be great out of the box. Those players, outside of the lottery, should spend a couple years in the minors before becoming NHL ready. Considering how fleeting a goalie's career can be since the Roy, Hasek, Brodeur, etc days, the piece he got was pretty good. I admit I lol'd hard when Bettman announced that trade and I'm ok eating crow now.

I don’t know. There was one draft year where I went wtf? I’m ok if you pick off the board thinking there is potential there. But one year they picked a bunch of older players like mallet in the 2nd round? I remember Gillis saying oh he can play in the ahl next season.

AzNightmare 11-18-2018 03:23 AM

What's wrong with Schneider? I haven't been following his career much anymore. Is he not an elite caliber goalie anymore?

Or is this solely on the context of getting a player with Horvat's skill at #9 overall?

Injury riddled and since coming back from missing the first 15 games has been lit up. Keith Kinkaid is slowly stealing the job away from him.

68style 11-18-2018 10:27 AM

Gagner is coming back boys! Hahahahaah

Liquid_o2 11-19-2018 10:20 AM

Gagner can replace Pouliot on the PP.

whitev70r 11-19-2018 04:46 PM

Damn ... Oilers so bad, heads are going to start to roll.

68style 11-19-2018 05:39 PM

Who is going to switch over to watch the Jets kill the Canucks when this KC v LA shootout is on???

MG1 11-19-2018 06:11 PM

Damn........... Sarah didn't get the memo.

All Thy Sons Command............. shame, shame, shame.

Oh wells.............. it's supposed to be that way, anyway. Yes, change is good, Donkey, but, "All of Us" is just way too weird. nuff said

MG1 11-19-2018 06:12 PM

Damn that LA vs. KC game ... highest points in MNF. Fasten your seatbelt for the finish!

Mind boggling! Hope these 2 teams make it to the SB.

Elias Pettersson is the first player with 12 goals in his first 17 NHL games since Alex Ovechkin in 2005

He had some solid seasons/stretches stats wise, but was never a Vezina finalist. He did help stabilize a not so good NJ team post Brodeur era, you wonder what he could have done with a proper team. But on the other hand we see what Bobrobsky has done through a similar period of time...

The biggest issue with goalies IMO is the gap between elite and average is a very small margin -- going by save percentages it's about 1.5 goals per 100. The margin is often made up and then some by how a team executes their systems play. Goal is the worst place to invest big dollars over long years because if you have a goalie that doesn't work well with your team's system, you're stuck with the big dollar goalie trying to hold his own because you can't rebuild your team's system around 1 goalie.

Case in point Carey Price. People were trying to trade away his 84m contract before it even kicked in last year

highfive 11-20-2018 10:50 AM

You just need your goalies to play hot during the playoffs and you’re good. You’re better off spending money on your centres and defence. Look at the Canucks now. Lose two bottom 6 centres in sutter and beagle and we start to run into issues. Game is so open now you need 4 solid centres to run 4 lines and outplay the opposing team.

whitev70r 11-21-2018 06:08 AM

McLelland, Yeo, Stevens, Quenville ... tough year for coaches.

68style 11-21-2018 07:15 AM

Quenville should never have been fired... that was a hit job by Chicago management and the Bowman family

whitev70r 11-21-2018 08:15 AM

Wonder why Oilers didn't consider Coach Q?

Bouncing Bettys 11-21-2018 08:23 AM

^Apparently they only talked with Hitchcock. Maybe Quenville refused to pick up the phone.

Expresso 11-21-2018 08:37 AM

Plus he's probably happy collecting his fat paycheck versus a 1 year temp job.

Chicago would have to grant permission.

Quenneville’s existing contract would be voided if he signs a new contract with a new team, so Edmonton would likely have to at least match his $6M salary.

whitev70r 11-21-2018 09:26 AM

It can be like player's contract where new team pays 1/2, Chicago pays 1/2 or any other agreed upon terms. If you're Chicago, why wouldn't you give permission? Would you rather pay $6M to have him do nothing or $3M and have him coach another team. Unless, of course, Q rather be a house husband. From what I can gather, these type A people would rather work. Hell, if I was Chiarelli, I'd consider AV over Hitch. Hitch is a 1 year wonder, at best. He might pull a rabbit out of his hat one more time and get them to the 8th spot, fool mgmt into giving him a renewal, then he'll get fired again.
