It's not as bad as Honda make it out to be but it's not nothin like some others make it out to be. It is significant. More and more people standing at street intersection medians with signs asking for money. Losing cause, who carries cash nowadays. Even happening way out in the boonies like Market Crossing, I think husband was working the intersection, wife was in front of SaveOn, refugee family.

Don’t follow any of those pages but I follow enough Vancouver content that there’s constantly associated content popping up along side it.. that’s how instagram works. I don’t have a single one of these types of accounts followed

Also like.. it’s happening? lol it’s a fairly common occurrence in the downtown schools to have dirty needles and strung out homeless people on property, it isn’t really some one off “rage bait” it’s very much a thing.

I was in Kelowna for the weekend for kids lacrosse tourney. Was pretty bad for street people / homeless/ fentanyl zombies. We were staying in a lower class albeit brand new hotel in rutland and there were needles in the parking lot , people passed out on the street.

Straight statistics I think don’t quite tell the story. There may be a similar amount of people on the streets as before ( though I bet it’s more) but it feels like way more because so many of them seem incapacitated ( bent over from the waist , collapsed in the ground looking like they are dead). I don’t think Honda is exaggerating here but I don’t know looking at the raw data you would see a huge jump either.

Feels like the meth/fent is by magnitudes worse than crack/heroin from 20-30 years ago.

I used to live in gas town and had no problems walking anywhere down there . Now I don’t think I’d be comfortable doing so. Perhaps my risk tolerance has gone down , or my disgust sensitivity or what not has gone up. Who knows. But it feel’s tangibly worse now.

I don't disagree it's worse. It for sure is. I just think that it's a societal change and only some of the blame lies on the government. We didn't have fentanyl in drugs 10-12 years ago. opioid addiction wasn't prevalent and the drug issue was more about coke and partying for rich people as an issue rather than a coping mechanism for chronic pain/horrible traumatic events. If it was a totally different government I believe we'd be in a similar scenario for everything other than the blown safe supply project, which the issues were clearly already there before that.
I also think the pearl clutching about it is pretty weak. I pass by what was a safe supply site, and has been a safe injection site, basically every time I walk my dog, and many of the long term residents in the shelter there are on a first name basis with me. I've hit people there with naloxone before, and that was in 2017/18. LONG before safe supply.

I think it is definitely bigger than just the Canadian/bc governments and there response/ or lack there of.

San fran , Seattle , Portland are all pretty much in the same boat of experiencing an increase in homeless and the issues that surround that. As well as the rise in severity . I think San Fran probably worse with the lack of enforcement on crime but thats only anectdotal.

However that doesnÂ’t mean we shouldnÂ’t call to account the bad /failed policies of our recent governments . Safe supply , I mean I can see how they got there with best of intentions but Jesus what a disaster.

If the narrative is that this explosion has occurred as a causation of the liberal/left governments instead of just a correlation I guess you would want to find a more right wing government situation where this didnÂ’t happen. Or even a left wing example for that matter. Are there good comparable that showed different policies affected different outcomes? Even typing it I find it hard to imagine a good comparable situation ( climate , left/right government , port city , democracy culture etc).

Your thoughts on the new federal minister of Housing?

Gregor Robertson?? My first reaction was "What the fuck???""

Wasn't Robertson in cahoots with real estate developers in Vancouver back in the day when he was the mayor???

Good luck in trying to make housing more affordable for Canadians haaha.

Most of the impact on housing are at the Provincial level. My guess is GR will try to push for more expedited and larger CMHC funding support for big developers in building up more rental inventory as the primary way to finance their larger scale projects.

Allegations about the former mayor Robertson. Although these are just allegations about corruption and nothing proven in a court of law, it makes me wonder why Carney picked bike boy Gregor to be the Minister of Housing.

This whole election was about the fed getting back into housing.

I believe this is only partially true. The major uptick in deaths from fentanyl happened in 2016, but opioids have been a problem for generations. Vandu started in 1998 and they aren't there for the rich kids.

Places like Insite that opened in 2003 were a response to the number of people that were having OD's over 20 years ago.

So yes the numbers are way up, but this is not a new issue just one that has become significantly worse. The good news is that the numbers of deaths by OD are going down (not just here, but across NA).

In the past were more people just hitting the rice wine, and sherry? I could believe it, but the issue of people trying to cope without much support isn't new.

Having said that, homelessness since covid has gone way up and honestly if I was on the street, I'd be looking for something to get me through the night as well.

The uptick in opioid addiction I believe lies solely on the oxy push and subsequent removal in the early 2000s
People who never would have considered street opioids were pushed into addiction then given absurd doses for things that never even should have had pharmaceutical level pain killers. Basically anyone who'd ever been in a car accident or had a sports injury was put at risk for addictions issues 100x greater than ever before. We are seeing the snowball effect of that.
I genuinely believe addictions and ODs would have probably stayed on course with historical data if it weren't for that.
There's a reason that this is a North American problem that far eclipses how bad it is in the rest of the world.

You search the guys name and it’s nothing but housing scandals and that’s your minister of housing?

I wonder what the forecast is for how much this new Canadian government is going to be pushing for innovation, because I have a really cool idea that I don't think has been done yet:

Why is there no such thing as a smart ratchet yet? Powered by AI?

Imagine if your ratchet could pair with your iphone, and communicate back and forth. The ratchet could have access to every socket, accessory, instructions, and torque values based on either the internet connection or massive library saved on the phone.

Imagine if the ratchet, say, used by your father for 20 years, could then be passed down to you. And, someday, if you are working on dad's 1991 Ford Mustang 5.0 and doing maintenance, it could talk to you in your father's own voice and tell you which tool is next for "X" maintenance task, and guide you through the process. Maybe even tell you your dad's favourite stories about the car in his own voice while you're working on the vehicle.

The ratchet could record the torque values for every bolt, via bluetooth, could show you exactly where every tool you have is. Imagine if your ratchet would been more rapidly the closer it got to your 10mm socket when trying to find the damn thing.

The smart ratchet could revolutionize the entire auto mechanic industry by pairing AI and huge databases of auto repair manuals, along with the saved repair jobs done by previous users of that smart ratchet, so the tool, paired with an iPhone or smartphone, would act as your AI-guide to maintaining any vehicle or machinery on Earth.

It would be so cool if the AI-powered smart ratchet could watch you do a head gasket job, and then when you've taken it all apart and ready to put the head back on, the ratchet would guide you because it recalled where all of the bolts, nuts, sockets, and parts were last, because you filmed it with the ratchet that used AI to record and save all of the details.

Just being able to have a "find socket" function would be fucking amazing. Imagine if the ratchet could beep louder/faster when you got closer to your missing fucking 10mm...

Why am I so smart but too broke to actually build this device?

A smart ratchet connected to your iphone could make magic happen. Imagine never losing a tool, a socket, extension, or even parts again.

It's 2025, how is this tool already not invented?

I was at Canadian tire the other day buying a fucking 10mm socket, and I looked everywhere, there is no such thing as a smart ratchet yet. Not even a SUPER BASIC one that can track where sockets are. How fucked is that?

I don't see anything wrong with this. There's a legitimate industry around white hat hacking. We should be hiring people to test our (lack of) security infrastructure. We're so behind compared to Europe.
