Health care workers from the US moving to Nanaimo.

So no to Ken Sim's idea of turning 6 pieces of city land into development for rentals. Not sure if idea was good or not, didn't do any kind of deep dive but part of me thinks Sim had his hand/finger in the pot somehow.

With motions like these which require 2/3 vote, Sim doesn't have the power.

westopher 10-22-2025 08:56 AM

Everything Sim does is in personal interest for him and any wealthy people who will let him dip his tiny dick into their money.
It’s not even hidden.

Beats living in Alberta. Have a few customers who moved after trumps first win and they love it here.

People will do anything if given enough money.
How many thousands of dollars did she get for agreeing to move.

GS8 10-22-2025 03:00 PM

Ken Sim looks like a Gotham sub villian

I guess it could be related to this but i feel like I've noticed a lot more American license plates driving around. Could be just selection bias.

whitev70r 10-22-2025 07:30 PM

Nanaimo is an upgrade to some of the hell holes, rural mining towns in the US.

As far as I know, they aren't being offered any bonus money to work here. The gov't has been working on reducing barriers for doctors and nurses so they can start working here asap. Considering what's going on with healthcare down south, this should surprise no one. It's been an absolute shit show just like everything else they're doing.

Not offered bonuses in general or today? Because if it's gone now, it was definitely happening before.

This page says it was happening until June 30, 2025.

In the video, the welcome card from Toronto was dated just before the end of June, so it's possible she got extra money for moving.

After a little more googling, https://careers.islandhealth.ca/why-...-and-benefits/

She got 20k for going to ER in island health. Deadline is end of this year.

bcrdukes 10-23-2025 03:30 PM

Anybody here work for Island Health?

I was referring to Americans coming to work here in Canada. Yes, going to remote locations there usually is a bonus involved because they have a tough time recruiting people to work there. I'm not sure if this bonus extends to foreigners, would have to look into that. For my job I also could have covered for a few months up north for a bonus as well as paid accommodations. Even then, I would only do it if I were single with no attachments here lol.

Trump just responded to Canada getting tough ... terminated all trade talks. Shit is escalating.

For us here in Western Canada, it just means we get less shitty Chrysler or GM cars but for those in ON, that = lots of jobs.

bcrdukes 10-23-2025 08:24 PM

I guess we need a hard-line leader to get through to Trump. Who will save the day? :troll:

The reality is sinking in that as long as trump is in office, trade with the US from any country will never normalize.
They need to spend the effort to build trade relationships elsewhere as nothing will come of the US trade talks for the next 3.3 years. Sell off what's left of our land to Chinese mining companies to weather the storm like harper did in the 2008 crisis?
