K, anyone else getting ticked off with Carney and Danielle Smith, working on a MOA regarding this pipeline to Northern BC. Feds are open to lifting Tanker Ban for this.

WTF is going on? This is actually pissing me off why and how they would go so far without consulting BC.

I am not happy about Carney trying to pressure / force this one down our throats.

I can't claim to be super knowledgable about the pros and cons of the pipeline proposal, but I am aware of the reasons Eby has cited in regards to his / BC's opposition to the pipeline expansion. I trust that he is not lying -- otherwise, he would have gotta called out by the media or other opponents a long time ago. And for the most part, I think his reasons are entirely reasonable to have.

Essentially, it seems to boil down to 2 - 3 things, depending on how you look at it / count it.

1. Federal funding (ie. public tax dollars from acrosss Canada) shouldn't be used to fund a project that would only primarily benefit Alberta. Furthermore, Eby argued that without private sector participation and funding, the project should not proceed because a lack of private sector participation indicates there isn't a strong enough business case to pursue the project.

2. The NW BC coasts is apparently not particularly suitable for oil tanker traffic. The seas are rough. There is a $1.x B fishery and tourism industry in the area. So if there is an accident of any sort, the consequences are gonna be pretty dire.

And we haven't even gotten into the Aboriginal rights yet.

On the other hand, the last couple of months has shown that Carney is quite OK with setting his environmentally conscious mind aside in exchange for a boost to the Canadian economy. I am not necessarily faulting him for this, since I know the precarious situation with US trade is really going to carry a significant impact on our own economy once CUSMA runs out.

I am not ideologically opposed to building a pipeline, but the current pipeline proposal from Danielle Smith sounds like there are a lot of problems with it, and BC will be the one stuck with the consequences when things go badly.

Maritime rules and tech have improved since the exxon valdez. Norway has similar geography. Minimizes the risk, although not zero. I think prince rupert instead of kitimat will be the middle ground for a deal, easier for ships to reach open water. We need to sell natural resources to pay for ever increasing social services. Cant have it all.

Either we make the northern gateway pipeline or we’ll build with the US the keystone XL and make less money.

I actually don't worry as much about the ships as I do about the pipeline itself, pipelines have shown to be extremely vulnerable to leaks and vandalism.

Environmental concerns like that bother me... I am less concerned with native claims, they keep hamstringing every economic development these days, <1/40th of the population shouldn't be controlling shit.

I have no issue with a pipeline if everything is done properly, as we are using the oil anyways. It’s better for the environment than shipping it on trucks and trains if the right precautions are taken.

The thing is though, these are just American megacorps that are gonna profit. People thinking this is some sort of economic saviour for Canada would be in for a rude awakening if they had the ability to process information to form a new opinion when everything plays out, but it will still be the governments fault for not doing 6 more pipelines in a decade when they are still poor.

Most American megacorps all ran for the hills and sold their Canadian assets after the oil crash of 2014. Canadian Natural, Suncor, Cenovus… all Canadian. LNG Canada in kitimat? Owners are asian megacorps from china, malaysia, korea and japan. US megacorps will protest northern pipelines and prefer pipelines that go south.

Modern pipelines have sensors and redundancies to minimize and contain leaks. Yes there are crazies that might sabotage like the one that keeps cutting the cable line for the gondola in squamish but pipelines have much more security.

Let’s face it, we all turn a blind eye to environmentalism to some effect. We mass consume products and prefer combustion engines as car enthusiasts.

There was the idea of increasing the capacity of the Trans Mountain Pipeline, already built. BC would support that.

In Danielle Smith's grand dream, I think this new pipeline is supposed to transport oil to some NW BC port, and then tankers from Asia could pick up the bitumen crude (?) for delivery to Asia.

Whereas the Trans Mountain is bringing bitumen from Edmonton to Burnaby.

Do we use up everything that is sent to Burnaby right now?

Right now, TMX can pump out 800,000 barrels a day and with optimization, it can pump out 1.1-1.2M barrels a day.

They are actively seeking port people and people with marine ops for these new terminals up north.

I heard that we wouldn't have the large super tankers, as the draft of the ships are too deep for our ports/coastline. They'd have to use smaller ships or dredge out deeper channels? Would it still make economic sense to have a pipeline filling smaller tankers?

Too bad we don't have anyone here that has experience in maritime transportation logistics that we'd consider an expert.

I believe they spoke about dredging, which is an awful idea. The destruction of the sea floor and the marine life damage is absolutely immeasurable.

That’s why prince rupert was such gong show for the bc maritime employers association to find longshore. They literally gave out applications to everyone in that little village. Now because they are paid the more or less the same as the guys down here, it’s skyrocketed the prices in that town. Houses are absolutely insane and if you’re not a longshore you basically can’t afford to live in that one horse town and need to move to terrace

One of my classmates lives in Prince Rupert. He doesn't work there as he's remotely based in the maritimes and the arctic on and off. He gets paid quite well, but compared to the pay standards of the port folks there, Badhobz is correct: My classmate is considered a peasant up there and is treated as such by the locals.
