I've been burned by those types of people multiple times, from people on both sides of things (suppliers & internal ones). I don't care what somebodies background is but if someone is selling a product they need to have a proper technical understanding of what they're actually selling so they're aren't completely misrepresenting it.

worked with 'those types' on both ends of the floor.

product managers saying yes to everything to the client without know the infrastructure capabilities or even asking engineering, and then saying engineering is too lazy or stupid to implement.

arrogant engineers that won't answer questions and say it's on the drawings (even though it's not) and do shit designs in 2D without thinking in real world 3D space, and think contractors are just "dumb installers".

worked with really smart non-engineers that are brilliant and passionate about work, willing to learn/ask questions about engineering so they have a better understanding of what's being built, why it's being built, so they can project manage better and advocate for their client when needed.

have come across engineers (or people with engineering degrees/diplomas) that are absolute bums and waste of space.

It's just interesting I don't see that same level of cynicism from other diasporas, such as the Chinese (and yes I know Chinese tend to skew conservative).

Why are Indians suddenly becoming the flag bearers of the white right?

Has it always been this way? Is this some weird offshoot of British colonialist mentality, as there are is some commonality to Nigerians pushing this bullshit as well.

There was and still a lot of hate against Chinese people but they're not making headlines so there's nothing to retweet a 10000 times to get locals mad. That said, go to countries like Japan and Korea and hate against Chinese people is increasing at an alarming rate.

Back to Indians, I feel the hate towards them comes from taking in millions over a short period of time. Add a slowing economy, many people getting wiped out during COVID, and housing becoming unaffordable for the vast majority of Canadians, and suddenly people need someone to blame. At some point Indians won't be making headlines so they'll be a new group to be mad at. OneBC is desperately trying to shift the hate towards Natives because of what’s going on in BC with land rights. I doubt they’ll get far, but that’s what the far right does.

On another note, this is interesting:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/health/articl...ealth-in-2026/

I guess the likes of people like Scott Galloway, who had Mark Carney on his podcast a while back, have finally made some headway into the thinking of our politicians.

On a personal note, I have had two former male colleagues of mine die in their 40s over the past year. They both were divorced and left behind children. I know one had a drug problem that they hid for many years, and the other had vices as well (alcohol). It's sad that young and middle-aged men are falling to vices such as drugs, alcohol, and gambling.

CivicBlues 12-24-2025 01:21 PM

Wonder what the proportion of men in previous generations succumbing to vices were in the past? I'm guessing it was a lot higher, but since it wasn't talked about stuff like that shit was swept under the rug. How many "heart attack" deaths in our father's and grandfather's generations were actually a result of alcohol and substance abuse?

westopher 12-24-2025 01:48 PM

I think mental health supports are much higher these days, but it’s also a hell of a lot harder to be successful so I’d imagine it’s a wash.

I totally agree.

Once upon a time ago, it used to be "Hongcouver". Then it shifted to mainland Chinese.

Now it's aimed at Indians who jumped all over our post-Covid relaxed immigration policies.

And I think you're right, as govermnents keep pushing their ideas for reconcilation forward, animosity towards Indigenous will grow and the far right parties will continue to have a stage.

the difference between hongers and mainlanders is they were here to spend money or were quite self sufficient

newcomers are often taxing our social system which was bad enough before

Damn. Paying luxury taxes like nobody’s business. Such shame. Such burden on society.

EvoFire 12-24-2025 06:44 PM

That shows how over done the student visa route is, and probably lots of students from India aren't legit.

True but there’s plenty of stories of rich Chinese coming here with millions, buying a house, but not working here and taking advantage of low income programs.
I stand by my statements about every ethnic group though. Some people are fucking pieces of shit, some are fantastic. If you are judging anyone for actions done by another individual because they have matching skin colour, religion, ethnicity, whatever, you’re one of the pieces of shit of whatever group you belong to.
Our social systems exist to help people that need it, and if they need it, I’m happy they can survive here instead of dying somewhere else.

bcrdukes 12-24-2025 07:14 PM

You still hear comments about Chinese people, especially on the west side. A lot of older white folks blame them for hollowing out neighbourhoods and for empty homes, which are often rented out to students. They also complain about heritage homes being torn down. In fact, there are a few FB groups that post pictures of old houses along with the names of the original owners, and most of the hate comments are directed at Chinese people. You can literally find hate in every corner of the internet nowadays.

Asians (including Indians) know how to game the system. They know every scam, every loophole and know to squeeze every penny. I don’t blame them, because when you’re competing against a billion other people to survive, it really is survival of the fittest. The issue with countries like Canada is that they weren’t built for people exploiting loopholes. It’s the same problem in the UK, which is why they have boats arriving every hour. The people coming in know they’ll get housing, food, and money, while local gov't are shellshocked and locals are stuck footing the bill.

Badhobz 12-24-2025 09:19 PM

Oh please, these whiteys are masters of colonialism and exploitation. Just because they didn’t have the gusto of their forefathers, doesn’t mean these guys are all innocent. Look at the underlying racism with the statements above. “Hollowed out their neighbourhood” “scamming” etc etc.

I don’t trust these old white fucks anymore than I trust bumjeet straight outta of India. Everyone’s out for themselves. But you’re right, theyll find some new scapegoat group sooner or later

On the one hand it's shitty and efforts should be made to prevent that, but at the same time things like huge tax breaks to billionaires and subsidies to oil company are costing Canada a lot more.

I think it is worth mentioning that back in 2014/15, China's economy was far stronger than it is now. Additionally, back then the general view (in China) torwards studying overseas was still very favourable, with the expectation that Chinese graudates with oversea credentials were in high demand. So International students from China came in very high numbers.

Fast forward to today -- China's economy is pretty weak in all kind of sectors. Emperor Xi has also been clamping down hard on assets getting funnelled out of the country, and China already has an over-abundance of university graduates that are unable to find any meaningful work. Graduates from overseas are viewed as having paid for an overly expensive education with no advantage over local graduates. So for the general population, the desire to send their children overseas for university degrees isn't nearly as desirable anymore.

CivicBlues 12-26-2025 09:57 PM

All you have to do is look at the top 3 countries in 2024 to see what's happening here. 161,000 from India alone? Are there even that many spots open for internationals in legitimate universities? What's a Nepalese going to do with a strip mall degree? Open up a guesthouse? Carry someone's bag up Mt. Everest? It's purely a cynical ploy by corporations to bring in cheap compliant labour. Come on!

A few years ago I was at a Christmas party at the Fairmount in Vancouver. The bar tender was from Nepal.

Something my brother said at Christmas stuck with me. You either work your ass off in your 20's or your 40's. How many people do you know from high school that did nothing in their 20's now working their asses off in their 40's. I know a few.

A lot of people born in this country are kind of lazy. You see them complaining about immigrants taking jobs but when you ask if they have applied at Walmart or Tims they get uppity. "Why would I work at those places".

If you really want to get ahead in life in this country you have to be willing to work your ass off at some point in your life.

Immigrants to Canada from places like India will do well because they are willing to work harder and smarter.

^ This is outdated...

The companies will post job ads (ghost jobs), then cry to the government how they can't find anyone to hire, so they can get taxpayer-funded LMIA fulfillments. They then are sent people from countries like India who get abused by the employers (withholding paychecks, threatening deportation etc) which results in said employees making far less than minimum wage and feeling helpless at the mercy of ghetto store owners..

Meanwhile, local students can't find their first jobs because they apply for all the ads they see but those ads will never get taken down because the applicants' resumes won't ever see someone. There is your cycle.

This is years of design by the corporatocracy and gullible, naïve newcomers thinking they'll actually get ahead if they 'work their ass off'. That's the exact same mentality as pulling up your bootstraps. It just doesn't work anymore.

6 people to an illegal basement suite? Sounds like a dream. Sign me up.

68style 12-27-2025 02:59 PM

I often hear older immigrants to Canada say that they, as immigrants, work their asses off… and then they turn around and say the new immigrants don’t and leech off the system.

They sound exactly like white boomers, they just haven’t realized it yet lol

I know how it works. For 25 plus years we hired local mostly white people. We would just put a help wanted sign on the door. That pool has dried up. Even places like Costco can't find enough workers. The local Costco has job fairs and they are lucky to hire a couple of people and a lot of those don't work out. They have had people quit mid shift first day.

I have a buddy who has a 14 year old daughter. He complains that she will not be able to find a part time job. Then I explain to him. 1 you live in the boonies so there are not may places close by she can work so you will have to drive her to work. 2. she can only work on the weekends. That's not good enough for most places. I offered a job at our store but there is no way he is going to drive her 25 minutes to work and then another 25 minutes to pick er up. That's almost 2 hours of his day gone.

I don't know man, took my niece 14 months to find a part timr mc job after moving her for university and she applied on 100s of jobs. Many of my sons friends have similar experiences, your experiences are just different than the people in my circle.
