How efficacious is the vaccine?

The Moderna vaccine has been shown to have an efficacy of approximately 92 per cent in protecting against COVID-19, starting 14 days after the first dose.
I’ll take my chances.

You know that the efficacy of the mRNA vaccines is 92% after just the first dose right?

If an entire group of vaccinated people get together, even if they've all the had just one dose the risk of serious illness is negligible.

I'm pretty confident in the Pfizer/Biontech vaccine, but if I had to convince someone to get the AZ vaccine and they got really sick with a blood clot, I can't even imagine how I would react. I wouldn't be able to live with myself.

So instead people like me said wait. And yes hindsight proved that right, but hindsight doesn't change the argument we were making in the first place. Can't have it both ways LUL

Another equally possible scenario is that you advise them not get AZ and then they catch COVID and get seriously ill/die.

You're in an impossible situation.

I would never tell someone NOT to get a vaccine, but yeah if someone did and they caught a bad case of covid, that would be awful

Slight tweak, you told them to wait for the one of the mRNA ones and they get COVID.

Same outcome?

No, if they'd wanted to get the AZ I'd be fine with that. I think my wife's aunt got that one, but her mom got pfizer. I would never steer someone away from getting a vaccine if it's available.

But if there is a choice, and the risks aren't too high, I'd say get the mRNA one. A lot of people here did that, and I agree with that choice

The idea of mixing two different variants... they are looking at it and some studies are being done, but it's not something that can be counted on just yet.

Hondaracer 05-17-2021 06:19 PM

Don’t worry, all us mRNAer’s will get some weird cancer in a few years anyways

Teriyaki 05-17-2021 06:30 PM

It'll be called a mutation alright. It's a feature, not a bug.
Can see it now, mRNA'ers become mutant race, regular vaxxers remain human. Mutant war commences. Anti-vaxxers have become sewer people because of the "toxic air". Glorious times ahead.

Hondaracer 05-17-2021 06:33 PM

Kinda funny how there was all the discussion and opposition to vaccine passports and even getting the vaccine because it creates a “class” system

Now first world countries creating a class system within the vaccinated

I can picture it now. A group of Yaletown yuppies at blue water “oh, you got Astra-Zeneca? Eww”

unfortunately even a 3 mos old article doesn't contain the fast-changing info

the variants are the dominant strains here and with one dose and no prior covid infection, scaling back on precautions may backfire

Searching mRNA and variant efficacy there are plenty of recent articles including Dr.Fauci speaking yesterday as to how effective the vaccines are against the variants, and in some cases the real world data being better than the clinical trials

Canadians can drive to U.S. for COVID-19 vax and avoid quarantine, Ottawa confirms

What they said: "Very clear: You need to go to the appointment only and return immediately," Musyj said. "Cannot stop anywhere else for anything."

What Canadians hear: "Canadians can drive to U.S."

Posting this in case those with a first AZ jab haven't come across it yet:

AstraZeneca 1st dose, Pfizer 2nd: Study says combination is safe and effective
https://globalnews.ca/news/7871590/m...ca-pfizer/amp/

I am a little surprised to see that mixing mRNA vaccines with AZ is as effective as it seems to be, but it is certainly good and welcomed news.

sonick 05-18-2021 11:55 AM

If anything, AZ peeps should qualify for TWO shots of Pfizer for that extra 150% protection.
