Mark Scheifele will suit up for the Winnipeg Jets in their must-win Game 6 against the Dallas Stars.

Head coach Scott Arniel confirmed Scheifele's status to reporters a few hours ahead of puck drop in Dallas on Saturday. The centre's status for the game was uncertain after the unexpected death of his father, Brad, overnight Friday.

Per Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press, Scheifele told Arniel his dad would have wanted him to play.

Bummer, ^ was hoping you were right and Jets win 1st game on the road to bring it back home for game 7. But Dallas won in OT in PP. Scheifele scored a goal but he was in the box for the penalty ... terrible way to lose.

Wow. What a tough loss for the Jets. Even tougher loss for Scheifele given the loss of his Dad. OT winner while Scheifele was in the penalty box.

Scheifele scores a goal but has to take a penalty to prevent the breakaway (knowing the refs had their whistles put away, so a penalty shot was going to be rare).. It's tough man. The handshake line was tough to watch

Panelists on HNIC were discussing that last penalty when Schiefele tripped Dallas player. Why didn't ref call a penalty shot? And if there was ever an option given to the team, penalty shot or 2 mins minor, which they would choose ... all of them chose, Penalty shot. Apparently, penalty shot % is 50-50. So you take the penalty shot, let the goalie at it, and hopefully, you wouldn't have to face a 2 mins PP. But alas, not an option. When ref's arm went up, I thought it was a penalty shot call for sure.

Well it depends on perspective… the defensive player is hoping for the penalty or, ideally, a takeaway without a penalty but that’s unlikely since they changed the rules…. Otherwise they wouldn’t even bother and just let the goalie deal with it the same as they would on a penalty shot.

Offensive players want the penalty shot, way more likely to score than a power play.

I just think about that weak ass penalty shot call we got at the end of the season, and now I have no idea what is or isn't going to be a penalty shot WutFace

Statistically, on avg, penalty shots have a higher success rate than power plays.

So defenders are banking on stopping the shooter with at most a penalty, without giving them a penalty shot.

Most teams would want to choose penalty shot because of a higher success rate. Unless the team has a red hot PP and maybe the shooter that got tripped up is statistically abysmal in penalty shots. And maybe in very rare instances where eating up 2 mins on a clock might be more valuable than risking a failed penalty shot.
