I'm still unsure what I'm trying to achieve with this setup, but I can add a 1.4x teleconverter on top which will get me 1120mm FF reach in a relatively portable setup.

Badhobz 12-29-2025 05:19 PM

It actually makes a lot of sense. The older we get, the more important weight and portability is when you go on these “photo walks”

Lugging around a full frame body + a 600mm f4 prime and tripod while you “hike” is insane.

Thats why im keeping my 100-400, its so light and portable. When i go actual hiking, ill just bring that and my 10-18 sigma and i got everything covered. Leaving this bazooka tube at home.

Badhobz 12-29-2025 05:28 PM

Becareful with those teleconverters though, it’ll take away 1 stop of light while 2x teleconverters take 2 stops of light.

So that guy with the 600mm prime f4 goes from f4 to f8 at 1200mm which is basically the same as my 1280mm at f9 (only a tiny bit brighter)

FF for life~! :fuckyea:

Badhobz 12-29-2025 08:46 PM

true, full frame is good for dynamic range and low light, but when it comes to REACH. m43 and apsc has you guys beat hands down.

i can shoot cyprus (i think) from richmond dyke and see the chair lift man. THE CHAIR LIFT!

the previous model is the OG . tons of wildlife vloggers use the P1000.

Badhobz 12-30-2025 07:46 AM

you ever try it? is it any good or are the images basically useless at 3000mm?

that ultra tiny sensor (apparently smaller than an iphone sensor) cant have very good dynamic range or clarity. and its only 16megapixel right?

Seems like a fun little thing to bring hiking though, no need for any huge lens/camera combo, lighter than even my r7+100-400mm combo.

bcrdukes 12-30-2025 10:19 AM

Do any of you guys use manual-focus lenses? (I'm suspecting radeonboy does) :D

Long story short, I rescued a new old-stock Olympus lens in Walmart's clearance section and bought a cheap body to try out the platform. The lens was supposed to be a quick flip but now I'm more than a few lenses deep:lol

Nah I'm not that hardcore, and I'm pretty sure the manual focus clutch on the Oly lenses don't count

N.V.M. 12-30-2025 04:23 PM

wildlife photographers don’t have time to manually focus.

bcrdukes 12-30-2025 04:51 PM

I plan to take photos of wildlife photographers.

My god the shots i got today are utterly insane. Scroll all the way down and you’ll see this heron landing, the damn thing looks so alien especially in the fog this afternoon.

unit 12-31-2025 03:36 AM

I do exclusively, but thats cause my shits old.
