A lot of money flowing into these GoFundMe's.
Some officers are donating their vacation and banked hours to some of these funds as well.
This whole ordeal just shows you how hard it is to get someone certified, the family tried, and ultimately weren't able to.

For once, Mayor Sim made a quick, smart decision as mayor after the rampage at the Lapu Lapu festival. He ordered a safety review of festivals, street events, in Vancouver.
I know that there are trucks at the Italian Day festival on Commercial Drive to act as barriers. Police presence is at the Italian Day festival.
Perhaps it's a good idea for mayors in other cities like Burnaby to do a safety review of festivals and street events happening in the summer? For example, the Hats Off Day in Burnaby. Hats Off Day is on June 7th this year.

My guess is that his mother will likely spend all her money and assets to hire a team of lawyers to argue for reduced sentence and a cushy psych ward instead of jail based on a claim of mental illness and trama due to her family issues (e.g. bro murdered, mom's attempted suicide, etc..)

Imagine if mother was typical caring Asian parent, lived with son for 30 + yrs of mental health issues, suffered watching son like this, tried her best, back and forth into the Psych ward, sees him get into trouble with the law, tried to have him certified the day before, system doesn't certify him ... and then this happens. And other son got murdered (perpetrator's brother) ... damn, what a hand of cards dealt to you in life !!!

The threshold to be declared not responsible for mental impairment is quite high. It’s not as simple as finding your own Psychiatrist who will certify you and that will
Be accepted. The crown will have there own doctor to certify etc.
Friend of mine was the crown prosecutor in the Kline case in Abbotsford and they fought (successfully)the defence trying to have him certified as not responsible.
That being said if this guy is found to be not responsible he should be sent to the forensic hospital and never be let out.

It isn't like VPD didn't do a risk assessment for the Lapu Lapu festival though. And while I don't particularly like the VPD myself, I trust that their assessment on the risk profile for the event should be reasonable accurate.
Honestly, nobody could have expected a mental health problem-driven perpetrator to conduct a mass casualty rampage like what had happened here. Of course every event can set themselves up while being armed to the teeth against any sort of attack, but then that'd dramatically raise the cost to organize, host, and attend these events too.
