One of the victims had his legs amputated yesterday.
We went to JO to drop off flowers at the memorial site, trumpeter was there playing songs, everyone was crying, my god that was sad.
Was really nice seeing so many people from outside of Filipino community over there showing support.
The whole thing just sucks because there's really nowhere to properly direct your anger. Usually when there's terrorism or bigotry involved in these types of mass casualty events, everyone can galvanize against the persons and their ideologies. This one is totally different because this perpetrator's story is so messed up at the same time, father dead, brother murdered, mother with suicidal ideations.
Kira was a member of my gym. They were a lovely person who passed at the Lapu Lapu Festival. Kira was also a councilor at two schools in New Westminster and touched many peoples lives. The Brazillian members of my gym have rallied around Kira's husband to help with the gofundme above. The current donations are astounding and we'd love to keep the momentum. Its been a very difficult couple days.

No fault doesn't extend to a motor vehicle act that is criminally charged. As far as I know, each individual affected by this dumb fuck will be able to sue since criminal charges have been laid.

Its gonna be hard to prove intent for a mental ill person. Plus dude has no assets. If I recall there was a case in Quebec (no fault system as well) where a kid got hit by a city bus and died. Since a kid doesnt have earnings or dependents the system paid out $80k. Do you think thats a reasonable price for a life?

I think it may be different with ICBC. I've had clients been paid out over $100k for musculoskeletal injuries before the no fault system came in place. So if you're able to sue, I feel like a life would be worth way more than $100k to ICBC.
These people would be suing ICBC, not the driver.
They could also sue the driver, but that action wouldn't be affected by the no fault insurance anyway.

Dudley Green stared into the eyes of the man in front of him.
“Just move out of the way,” the man asked. He spoke nicely, polite amid the chaos that surrounded them.
Behind Mr. Green stood Kai-Ji Adam Lo, the driver of the black SUV that had just torn through a street filled with pedestrians at Vancouver’s Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party.
When Mr. Green wouldn’t move, the man in front of him began to weep.
“He needs to die,” the man told Mr. Green.
“I don’t disagree,” Mr. Green said, in as calm a voice as he could muster. “But now is not the time.”
Mr. Green had been sick all week but decided to get out and catch a bit of the end of the Filipino festival on Saturday, including the closing act, for whom he had once worked security. He was leaving when the black SUV came careening down the road lined with food trucks.
“Everything just exploded in a flash,” he told The Globe and Mail, in an interview on Tuesday. “And I can tell you, there was carnage. It was just horrendous. A horrible scene to observe.”
Eleven people were killed, and dozens more seriously injured, including a 22-month-old boy.
Prosecutors have charged a 30-year-old Vancouver resident with murder for killing at least 11 people aged between five and 65 and injuring dozens after he rammed an SUV through a crowd at a Filipino community festival on April 27.
Mr. Green saw many of the victims. Then he saw a crowd of distraught witnesses converging on the driver, who was standing against a chain-link fence alongside a security guard.
Mr. Green, who is six-foot-two, walked over and put himself between the driver and the irate crowd.
“I stood up tall and said to people, ‘Hey, just calm down. Let’s wait for the police. Let’s wait for the police,’” Mr. Green says. “People were emotionally charged and very angry.”
In a cellphone video from the scene, Mr. Green stands in the centre of the crowd, blocking the driver with his body.
Amid the melee, Mr. Lo stands wide-eyed and blinking, sometimes saying, “I’m sorry.”
One man tries to get at Mr. Lo from the side and is blocked by a man in an apron. Another attempts to get at him from the front and is intercepted and led away by a man in a safety vest.
“I just stood there and just talked to people and told them to be calm and try to calm down the situation, even though, inside, after I had seen all the carnage that had happened, I was a little bit beside myself,” said Mr. Green.
A bus driver who is active in his union and previously worked in security, he says he used his past training and experience to make himself as calm as possible, attempting to de-escalate the situation.
“I just knew inside who I am, and that’s the right thing to do. I figured once the police came, he would be arrested, and then that will at least lead to some kind of understanding.”
He said he knew if the crowd became violent, there would be video of that, too, and those who attacked the driver would be arrested and charged.
He told the man who’d asked him to move, “If I move out of the way and you do what you’re intending to do, who’s going to look after your family?”
Slowly, the crowd dispersed, and police arrived to arrest Mr. Lo, who is now charged with eight counts of second-degree murder. More charges are expected.
As videos of the driver circulate on social media, Mr. Green says he’s had friends and acquaintances from all over the world message him about what he did to protect the driver.
“I’ve had a lot of my Filipino friends actually call me and thank me for actually making sure that guy didn’t get killed,” he said. “And at the same time, there are others that said I should not have stopped them. I should have let the crowd just beat the crap out of him and maybe even kill him.”
Knowing that, Mr. Green says he consulted with his mother before agreeing to share his story.
“She said to me, ‘Son, you should never apologize for doing the right thing at the right time, and don’t be afraid to let people know that,’” he said. “Everybody has the ability to do the right thing at the right time. It’s their choice. Either they choose to or not.”

Might be paywalled for most of you but a good story in light of the situation, and that there are still good people out there.
One of the first thing that Eby noted were those who restrained themselves and kept the guy there until police arrived. Guy was right though, if you attacked the perpetrator, then who is going to take care of your family when you go to jail for assault?
What I give them credit for is the courage to hold him there, you never know the state of mind of someone who just did this. He could have a weapon, he could go berzerk and start assaulting bystanders once he got out of the car. I guess that group of people who guarded the perpetrator could read the situation and saw that he was no longer a threat.

One of my coworkers went to the festival and left just before the last act because her friends wanted to leave. She wanted to stick around till the end and grab something from the food truck afterwards, but ultimately stuck with her friends.
She came to work on Monday with PTSD and survivor's guilt - she broke down at one point but wanted whatever normalcy she could get through work. It was gut-wrenching to listen to her and see her trying to work through all this.

I empathize to a degree with what the guy was going through, but sometimes an ass kicking is in order.
I mean what’s the government gonna do ? He’s already with a team of mental health professionals, has a previous record with the cops, and has a family history of mental illness. He’s already gotten “help” , the rest is on him. Having a retarded brain doesn’t give you the right to destroy 11 families and a few dozen more seriously injured people.

Mostly quiet, wouldn't say bullied anymore or less than most ppl growing up. Not many close friends and wasn't good at league. Not much to say. I remember where he lived since we took the same route walking home when we were like 11.
We did some digging on the day of the accident on his socials and yearbook, but it'd dox so many of us since we're in the same row in the yearbook photos lol
