Hey ritchie rich. Random question for you. I was at the Burnaby Central Park railway today and it hit me. Why don't trains these days have a caboose anymore?

Hobz destroyed all the rear ends, therefore no more caboose.

they dont need it anymore. There's an automatic braking system that is radio controlled attached to the end of all trains (this red thing below)

The old cabooses had a signalmen who sat in the caboose, and when the train uses the air brakes, the caboose guy would release the pressure from that end which would apply the brakes from the rear --> head thus speeding up the air braking. Likewise when the brakes are releasing, the caboose guy would release and thus charge back up the air brakes.

Now it's all automatic through this ABU thing. Eliminating a good job, a hiding place, a haven of drinking beer, eating chicken and all sorts of fun stuff.

Sniff sniff I miss being a conductor a lot... should have never left.

That's the camaraderie of the high rails, no need to be politically correct in the cab for fear of getting a HR meeting and he aint no snitch to report badhobz for filming.

Badhobz how do you learn how to operate a train? Do you practice in the yard before they cut you loose? If you think about it; planes, boats and trucks all have hobby civilian versions to get experience but you cant get that for trains.

Trains are pretty easy. You don’t need to turn. Just move stick forward or move stick back. The most challenging aspect is knowing how much air brakes you have and how long it’ll take to recovery the air. You cannot keep applying brakes, you’ll run out of air. In the wintertime it could take hours to pump up the air system again so if you take a brake you better know exactly how much brakes you need and know how long it’ll take to recover the system.

You can get civilian experience by playing train simulator on PC. They have some pretty hardcore versions that are so good that CP and CN uses them.

We were all belt pack trained (basically a giant remote control train) that you control while switching in the yard. So you and your mate pitch the control around and whoever is “it” controls the train while the other guy operates as a normal conductor. Lots of fun. Used the train to slice geese…. Block longshoremen….Got ice cream off venables while blocking everyone… best memories

^this is what a belt pack looks like. Fat guys make it look like a gay ass fanny pack

If you've never been to the Burnaby Centrail Railway, it's really fantastic. I appreciate the passion those train nerds have for this stuff. My son loves it.

Today we rode the steam engine and it derailed quite badly. I felt bad for the operator. Those locomotives are not cheap and I suspect it was damaged, along with the rails.

I wonder if it derailed due to the heat. Rail can sometimes get a “sun kink” where the heat warps the rail and becomes out of gauge. Our track maintenance dudes always went around measuring random points on the network in the summer.

also you see what happens when our people don’t build the railroad ?!?! It nuuuuuu guuud mang. Wong Ping Ding can lay ballast like no one else.

I never realized the juxtaposition until now.
Chinaman build railroad cause we forced him, now chinaman run railroad and force us to fix it.

Yes the delicious irony. All the track laborers are either white or east indian. Mostly white.

Old trick we used to use on BOGO... add +1 shots of vodka/rum/whatever in the drink and 90% of bartenders will still bogo the +1 and the drink!

Interesting... from the article:

Quote:
House size limits

Richmond first set a limit in 2017 of 10,700 square feet for homes in the ALR after residents expressed concerns about speculation and valuable farmland being kept out of reach of new farmers.

Richmond city council voted in 2018 to further limit the size of ALR homes to 4,300 square feet — more than 1,000 square feet lower than newly brought in provincial restrictions.
Does that mean properties with houses built before the size limit was imposed would be worth more?

My GF was telling me that her co-worker was walking to work this morning (Saturday) like he does all the time but today was different:

He's a fob so he's still fairly naïve and thinks Canada is what it was 30 years ago.

Anyway, he's walking and he hears someone calling out to him. He looks over and sees it's coming from a lone car in a parking lot. The driver is motioning him to come over so he does (because he's naive).

He gets to the car and sees 2 more occupants. This time, the front passenger starts talking and asks my gf's coworker if he wants some free cologne samples. Coworker is like sure (because he's naive).

The front passenger sprays some of the cologne onto the guy's wrist and starts chatting him up. As he's doing that, the guy in the back attempted to snatch the coworker's necklace. He didn't get it but it did snap. Luckily, the co-worker was able to hold onto it and then bolt outta there.

Before my GF even gave out the description, I just boldly asked:

Me: Did they look like the finest from Brampton?

GF: Nods

Me:

Another one of her friends got sold fake jewelry out of a car by some of Brampton's finest as well. Not sure if the exact same people but hey, let's go with some pattern recognition

They (didn't confirm if it was city or what not) actually came in to their house for an inspection. 1 suite was legal as it's was primary residence, however, their 2 other 'suites' are NOT considered allowable due to their separate entrances. After being slapped twice, it was not serious but it's mentally draining.

Another person who was doing air b n b said it's just sucks that all income from air b n b are sent directly to Rev Canada, so you can't really do it 'under the table' as rev canada will come and ask you why you didn't claim such income.

The BC law kicked in which killed the tourism / air b n b victoria suites. (pretty much had to be primary residence)

Overview of the provincial principal residence requirement
B.C. has a provincial principal residence requirement in some areas of the province which limits short-term rentals to:

The home where the host lives for a longer period of time in a year than any other place

Plus one secondary suite or accessory dwelling unit on the same property

Accessory dwelling unit
An accessory dwelling unit (often referred to as an ADU) is a self-contained living unit with its own kitchen, sleeping area, and washroom facilities, and which is located on the same property as a dwelling unit. An accessory dwelling unit is sometimes referred to as a garden suite, laneway home, carriage house or garage suite.
